Distal Forearm Fracture Open Reduction-Internal Fixation: Sonographic Detection of Hardware Malalignment and Associated Tendon Injuries Missed by Radiography.

Tendon injury is a known complication of distal radius fracture plate and screw fixation. Targeted musculoskeletal sonography is uniquely capable of assessing both tendon integrity and hardware abnormalities not recognized on radiographs. Each of the 3 patients described presented with pain after an open reduction-internal fixation following a distal forearm fracture. In each patient, radiographic findings, specifically the hardware position, were interpreted as normal. Important radiographically occult observations were subsequently made with sonography, including 3 proud screws and tendon in

Altered Sensorimotor Cortical Activities During Forearm Movement in Humans With Spinal Cord Injury.

AIMS: Decoding the motor intention by electroencephalography to control external devices is an effective method of helping spinal cord injury (SCI) patients to regain motor function. Still, SCI patients have much lower accuracy in the decoding of motor intentions compared to healthy individuals, which severely hampers the clinical application. However, the underlying neural mechanisms are still unknown. The aim of this paper is to investigate changes in cortical activities after SCI, which are direct determinants of motor decoding performance. METHODS: We performed source localization analyse

Injury Risk for the Hand and Forearm Under Loading Representative of Behind Shield Blunt Trauma.

Ballistic shields protect users from a variety of threats, including projectiles. Shield back-face deformation (BFD) is the result of the shield absorbing energy from a projectile and deforming towards the user. Back-face deformation can result in localized blunt loading to the upper extremity, where the shield is supported by the user and may cause injury through behind armour blunt trauma (BABT) mechanisms. Post-mortem human subject (PMHS) responses are critical to identify the injury risk in these high-rate scenarios and are used to quantify the injury tolerance. Two vulnerable locations al

Elbow Dislocation with Irretrievable Rotating-Rope Injury of the Forearm: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous dislocation of the elbow, radioulnar joint and proximal radius fracture with rotary noose injury to the medial ulna tubercle is extremely rare. An emergency surgery was performed to reduce it. The radial head with the backbone was reset after two hammers were fixed, then the radial capitulum safety was fixed with a locking plate. After the ulnar instability was examined, two Kirschner wires were drilled percutaneously to fix the elbow flexion at 100° under closed reduction, and two Kirschner wires were drilled percutaneously to fix the ulnar joint. Good follow-up resul

Natural history of elbow flexion and forearm rotation contractures in obstetric brachial plexus injury.

A prospective database study was undertaken to investigate the severity and progression of elbow and forearm contractures in patients with obstetric brachial plexus injury. One-hundred and fifty-nine patients, who had not undergone nerve repair (mean age 12 years at last follow-up) (56 Narakas Group 1, 66 Group 2, 27 Group 3, 10 Group 4) were studied. Mean fixed flexion of the elbow at last follow-up was 13° for Group 1, 15° for Group 2, 19° for Group 3 and 24° for Group 4. Severe contracture of 30° or more developed in 31 children (mean age 118 months), with poorer active shoulder abduction b

'I fell off and landed badly': Children's experiences of forearm fracture and injury prevention.

Forearm fractures are one of the most common injuries sustained by children. Our descriptive study addressed, from the perspective of a child, the following research objectives: (1) to describe their fracture experience and (2) to describe how fractures might be prevented. Photovoice is a unique research strategy by which people create and discuss photographs. This technique has been used to elicit the perspectives of those whose voices are often 'not heard' in research, like children. Participants were recruited from a larger three-year prospective trial and included 10 boys (12.3 ± 1.6 years

Compartment syndrome resulting from undetected ulnar artery injury in the absence of a forearm fracture.

A 6-year-old boy presented following a transient crush injury to his forearm. He displayed mild abrasions but no laceration or associated fractures. The injury resulted in traumatic rupture of the ulnar artery, which caused a large forearm haematoma and an acute forearm compartment syndrome. Prompt clinical diagnosis and operative intervention were required to prevent disastrous consequences.

Exercise-induced muscle injury augments forearm vascular resistance during leg exercise.

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the effect of exercise-induced muscle injury on hemodynamic responses during exercise. Ten subjects performed unilateral isometric knee extensions (IKE) at 30% of preinjury maximum voluntary contraction to fatigue and for 3 min before and 48 h after muscle injury. Muscle injury was elicited by performing 8 sets of 10 repetitions of eccentric muscle actions of the knee extensor muscles (i.e., quadriceps muscles) by lowering a weight equivalent to 75% of eccentric maximum load. Exercise time to fatigue for IKE at 30% of maximum voluntary co

One-bone forearm for the treatment of supination contractures secondary to neonatal brachial plexus injury.

BACKGROUND: The one-bone forearm procedure has been considered as a potential treatment for severe forearm deformities. However, its primary limitation lies in the elevated risks of nonunion and infection. In order to enhance union rates, a technical modification was introduced, aiming not only to establish end-to-end radio-ulnar fixation but also to incorporate an additional overlay and fixation between the proximal and distal radius osteotomy stumps. This technique, initially applied in a heterogeneous patient population including individuals with neurological, tumoral, and congenital condit

Forewarned Is Forearmed: Machine Learning Algorithms for the Prediction of Catheter-Induced Coronary and Aortic Injuries.

Catheter-induced dissections (CID) of coronary arteries and/or the aorta are among the most dangerous complications of percutaneous coronary procedures, yet the data on their risk factors are anecdotal. Logistic regression and five more advanced machine learning techniques were applied to determine the most significant predictors of dissection. Model performance comparison and feature importance ranking were evaluated. We identified 124 cases of CID in electronic databases containing 84,223 records of diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures from the years 2000-2022. Based on the f1-s

Segmental Forearm Fracture Due to Grip-Lock Injury in Male Gymnast: A Case Report.

CASE: A fifteen-year-old male gymnast sustained a segmental forearm fracture with physeal involvement as the result of a grip-lock injury. CONCLUSION: Grip lock occurs when a leather grip becomes caught around a bar while the athlete is rotating around it. This may lead to physeal injuries, extensor tendon injuries, and fractures of the hand, wrist, or forearm. Proper grip fit and maintenance as well as education of coaches, parents, and athletes is important to prevent this type of injury.

Neurological and vascular injury associated with supracondylar humerus fractures and ipsilateral forearm fractures in children.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5% of supracondylar humerus fractures in children are associated with an ipsilateral forearm fracture, often referred to as a floating elbow when both injuries are displaced. Historically, these patients have higher complication rates than patients with an isolated supracondylar humerus fracture. The purpose of this study was to review the acute neurologic and vascular injuries in patients with ipsilateral, operative supracondylar humerus and forearm fractures and compare the findings with a cohort of isolated, operative supracondylar humerus fractures. The role of prostaglandin and antioxidant availability in recovery from forearm ischemia-reperfusion injury in humans.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction, manifesting as attenuated flow-mediated dilation (FMD), is clinically important. Antioxidants may prevent this dysfunction; however, the acute effects of oral administration in humans are unknown. Low flow-mediated constriction (L-FMC), a further parameter of endothelial health, is largely unstudied and the mechanisms for this response unclear. METHODS: Twelve healthy participants (five women and seven men) completed three test conditions: control; antioxidant cocktail (α-lipoic acid, vitamins C and E); and prostaglandin inhibitor ingestion (ibuprofen). Corticomotor representation to a human forearm muscle changes following cervical spinal cord injury.

Functional imaging studies, using blood oxygen level-dependent signals, have demonstrated cortical reorganization of forearm muscle maps towards the denervated leg area following spinal cord injury (SCI). The extent of cortical reorganization was predicted by spinal atrophy. We therefore expected to see a similar shift in the motor output of corticospinal projections of the forearm towards more denervated lower body parts in volunteers with cervical injury. Therefore, we used magnetic resonance imaging-navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to non-invasively measure changes in corti

Acute forearm compartment syndrome secondary to local arterial injury after penetrating trauma.

BACKGROUND: Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a well-described surgical emergency that requires an immediate diagnosis and emergent operative intervention. Failure to either make the diagnosis or to implement the appropriate treatment quickly can result in severe long-term morbidity. The purpose of this article is to document evidence that penetrating trauma which results in arterial injury may cause acute forearm compartment syndrome. As a result, this mechanism should alert surgeons to the possibility of acute compartment syndrome secondary to arterial injury. METHODS: A retrospective rev

Does radial artery harvesting for coronary revascularization cause neurological injury in the forearm and hand?

OBJECTIVE: Radial artery (RA) is now used widely as a conduit of choice in coronary artery bypass grafting. Although RA removal is considered safe in the presence of adequate collateral arterial supply, there is still a considerable suspicion on the functional status of the forearm and hand. However, a neurological dysfunction may occur owing to either surgical trauma or ischemic neuropathy. This study was aimed to investigate the functional outcome of the donor forearm nerves of the patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting surgery with RA conduits. METHODS: A consecutive series
