Lightness, filling-in, and the fundamental role of context in visual perception.

Visual perception is defined by the unique spatial interactions that distinguish it from the point-to-point precision of a photometer. Over several decades, Lothar Spillmann has made key observations about the nature of these interactions and the role of context in perception. Our lab has explored the perceptual properties of spatial interactions and more generally the importance of visual context for neuronal responses and perception. Our investigations into the spatiotemporal dynamics of lightness provide insight into underlying mechanisms. For example, backward masking and luminance modulat

Tailoring pedagogical methods to enhance student engagement through a student-faculty partnership in an undergraduate immunology course.

Getting real-time feedback on pedagogical methods used in the classroom can be a challenge due to a variety of reasons, including the classroom format, instructor lecturing styles, as well as weariness of students to engage instructors. However, a structured semester-long student-faculty partnership can serve as a powerful tool to enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement. We describe here our version of a student-faculty partnership program (SFPP) model in an upper-level undergraduate Immunology course where a student from a non-science major was embedded in the course to observe

Quality matters: Artificial intelligence-based assessment of feedback quality predicts technical skill improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Consistently delivering high-quality feedback is critical, yet challenging, in surgical education. We hypothesized that feedback quality, as assessed by artificial intelligence (AI, Teach1) based-tools, would correlate with improvements in technical skill acquisition during simulated paracentesis training. METHODS: Seventy-five fourth-year medical students meeting inclusion criteria (baseline Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills scores ≤20) performed paracentesis on simulators, received instructor feedback via a digital platform, and completed a second attempt. Feedback suppression of B cell colony formation in healthy individuals.

Proliferation and differentiation of B cells has been extensively studied and the study of feedback suppression of B cell proliferation has been limited to humoral factors. However, very little is known about feedback suppression of B cell proliferation by cellular influences. We have previously reported on the role of T cells and their subsets on B cell proliferation in that we did not observe suppression of B cell colony growth by T cells. We now report on the role of B cells in limiting B cell proliferation. B cell colonies were grown in methyl cellulose for either 3 days or 5-6 days utiliz

Development of an electrosurgery-compatible simulation task for quantitatively assessing oral cancer resection skills: initial validity evidence.

BACKGROUND: The quality of oral cancer resection is extremely important for patient outcomes, such as local control and survival. However, most current simulators either provide only rater-dependent feedback or are not compatible with electrosurgery. Therefore, we developed an electrosurgical simulation task for oral cancer resection that provides objective quantitative metrics and collected initial validity evidence. METHODS: We developed a soft tissue simulation task using a plant-derived model that supports electrosurgery. As quantitative measures demonstrating "ensuring appropriate margin

Involving parents from the start: formative evaluation for a large randomised controlled trial with Botswana Junior Secondary School students.

While HIV prevention research conducted among adolescent populations may encounter parental resistance, the active engagement of parents from inception to trial completion may alleviate opposition. In preparation for implementing a large randomised controlled trial (RCT) examining the efficacy of a behavioural intervention targeting adolescent sexual risk behaviours, a formative evaluation was undertaken to assess parental reactions to the proposed trial. Six focus groups were conducted with parents of adolescents (aged 13-17) from rural, peri-urban and urban junior secondary schools in Botswa

Laparoscopic suturing training using positive or negative feedback: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based training (SBT) relies heavily on feedback to optimize skill acquisition. While prior studies suggest both positive and negative feedback enhance immediate performance, their effects on skill acquisition and motivational implications remain underexplored. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial recruited 42 laparoscopic-naïve medical students, stratified into three groups: positive feedback (emotional encouragement), negative feedback (critical remarks), and no feedback. Participants were assessed at baseline using the intracorporeal suturing assessment tool (ISA

Post-trip safety interventions: State-of-the-art, challenges, and practical implications.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, risky driving behaviour is a major contributor to road crashes and as a result, wide array of tools have been developed in order to record and improve driving behaviour. Within that group of tools, interventions have been indicated to significantly enhance driving behaviour and road safety. This study critically reviews monitoring technologies that provide post-trip interventions, such as retrospective visual feedback, gamification, rewards or penalties, in order to inform an appropriate driver mentoring strategy delivered after each trip. METHOD: The work presented h

Neural activation during imitation with or without performance feedback: An fMRI study.

In our daily lives, we often receive performance feedback (PF) during imitative learning, and we adjust our behaviors accordingly to improve performance. However, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms underlying this learning process. We hypothesized that appropriate PF would enhance neural activation or recruit additional brain areas during subsequent action imitation. Pictures of 20 different finger gestures without any social meaning were shown to participants from the first-person perspective. Imitation with or without PF was investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging

Immediate feedback during academic testing.

Performance on two multiple-choice testing procedures was examined during unit tests and a final examination. The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique provided immediate response feedback in an answer-until-correct style of responding. The testing format which served as a point of comparison was the Scantron form. One format was completed by students in introductory psychology courses during unit tests whereas all students used the Scantron form on the final examination. Students tested with Immediate Feedback forms on the unit tests correctly answered more of the final examination question

Gamified Virtual Reality Training for Pneumatic Reduction of Intussusception in Children: Formative Evaluation of a Low-Fidelity Prototype.

BACKGROUND: Gamification, defined as the application of game design principles in nongame contexts, has garnered increasing attention for its potential to enhance motivation and engagement across various fields, including medical education and training. However, there is a lack of virtual reality (VR)-based simulations on pneumatic reduction of intussusception (PRI) in children in Brunei, thereby limiting practical training opportunities for medical students and surgical trainees. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to obtain experts' reviews of proposed gamification guidelines by conceptualizing a ga

Brief school-based interventions to assist adolescents' sleep-onset latency: Comparing mindfulness and constructive worry versus controls.

Difficulties falling asleep are common among adolescents, especially during times of stress. Adolescents may thus benefit from brief techniques (15 min) that decrease pre-sleep cognitive-emotional arousal and sleep-onset latency. The present study used a 3 (intervention: mindfulness bodyscan mp3, constructive worry, control) by 3 (time: baseline, week 1, week 2) mixed-model design on a school-based sample of adolescents (N = 232; Mage  = 15.9 ± 0.8 years, range = 14-18 years; 19% male), and a sub-sample of adolescents with prolonged sleep-onset latency (i.e. ≥30 min; N = 119; Mage  = 16.9 ± 0.

Decreased feedback learning in anorexia nervosa persists after weight restoration.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a serious disorder, with a mortality rate the highest of any psychiatric illness. It is notoriously challenging to treat and mechanisms of illness are not well understood. Reward system abnormalities have been proposed across theoretical models of the persistence of AN. Feedback learning is an important component of how reward systems shape behavior and we hypothesized that individuals with AN would show poorer learning from feedback. METHODS: We administered the acquired equivalence task to measure both learning from incremental feedback and generalization

Developing a coaching mechanism for practicing surgeons.

BACKGROUND: While performance feedback and assessment are hallmarks of surgical training, they abruptly cease after training is completed. In their absence, performance may stagnate and poor habits persist. Our aim was to develop a coaching mechanism for practicing surgeons with feedback provision based on objective performance assessment. METHODS: Technical and nontechnical intraoperative video recordings from laparoscopic or robotic cholecystectomies, colectomies, and hysterectomies were assessed by a blinded surgeon and a human factors expert, respectively. Aspects of performance in need o

Entrustable professional activities in general surgery residency: a comparative review of five national training systems.

Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are a framework for competency-based assessment that focus on observable units of clinical work and are increasingly used in general surgery training. This narrative review compares EPA implementation across five national systems and examines validity evidence, administrative burden, and digital infrastructure. The databases PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were searched using terms related to EPAs and general surgery training. Two reviewers independently screened records, with disagreements resolved by consensus, and framewor
