Oxantel disrupts polymicrobial biofilm development of periodontal pathogens.

Bacterial pathogens commonly associated with chronic periodontitis are the spirochete Treponema denticola and the Gram-negative, proteolytic species Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia. These species rely on complex anaerobic respiration of amino acids, and the anthelmintic drug oxantel has been shown to inhibit fumarate reductase (Frd) activity in some pathogenic bacteria and inhibit P. gingivalis homotypic biofilm formation. Here, we demonstrate that oxantel inhibited P. gingivalis Frd activity with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 2.2 μM and planktonic growth of T. for

Investigation of subgingival profile of periodontopathic bacteria using polymerase chain reaction.

Periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus and Treponema denticola play an important role in the initiation and progression of periodontitis. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between periodontal clinical parameters and the subgingival profile of periodontopathic bacteria. Twenty-six periodontitis patients (23-62 years of age; mean age, 40.2±13.2) with no systemic disease agreed to participate in the study. Periodontal clinical parameters, including probing depth (PD)

Phillyrin: A review of its pharmacokinetics and multi-target anti-inflammatory mechanisms for therapeutic potential.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a critical process in both physiological defense and the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. While current anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids are effective, their long-term use is associated with significant adverse effects, highlighting the need for safer alternatives. Phillyrin, a primary bioactive lignan extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), has emerged as a promising natural anti-inflammatory agent. METHODS: Data regarding the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology of phillyrin were collect

Relationship between IgA Nephropathy and Porphyromonas gingivalis; Red Complex of Periodontopathic Bacterial Species.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) has been considered to have a relationship with infection in the tonsil, because IgAN patients often manifest macro hematuria just after tonsillitis. In terms of oral-area infection, the red complex of periodontal bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), Treponema denticol (T. denticola) and Tannerella forsythia (T. forsythia)) is important, but the relationship between these bacteria and IgAN remains unknown. In this study, the prevalence of the red complex of periodontal bacteria in tonsil was compared between IgAN and tonsillitis patients. The pathogenicity

Periodontal pathogens and obesity in the context of cardiovascular risks across age groups.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among noncommunicable diseases. Over the past decade, there has been a notable increase in the prevalence of CVDs among young individuals. Obesity, a well-known risk factor for CVDs, is also associated with various comorbidities that may contribute to cardiovascular risk. The relationship between periodontal pathogens and CVD risk factors, including obesity, smoking, lipid metabolism disorders, and inflammatory markers, remains underexplored. METHODS: This study examined the relationship between six pe

The Influences of Periodontal Status and Periodontal Pathogen Quantity on Salivary 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine and Interleukin-17 Levels.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a biofilm-initiated disease that is characterized by elevated inflammatory status. 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and interleukin (IL)-17 are highly associated with inflammation and bone resorption and therefore are regarded as potential biomarkers for periodontitis. In this study, the associations between salivary 8-OHdG and IL-17 levels and clinical and microbial parameters before and after non-surgical treatment are investigated. METHODS: Forty-five patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and 47 periodontally healthy volunteers were recruited for the study.

Outer Membrane Vesicles Prime and Activate Macrophage Inflammasomes and Cytokine Secretion In Vitro and In Vivo.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are proteoliposomes blebbed from the surface of Gram-negative bacteria. Chronic periodontitis is associated with an increase in subgingival plaque of Gram-negative bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia. In this study, we investigated the immune-modulatory effects of P. gingivalis, T. denticola, and T. forsythia OMVs on monocytes and differentiated macrophages. All of the bacterial OMVs were phagocytosed by monocytes, M(naïve) and M(IFNγ) macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. They also induced NF-κB activation and incr

Progression of chronic periodontitis can be predicted by the levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola in subgingival plaque.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth associated with bacteria. Diagnosis is achieved retrospectively by clinical observation of attachment loss. Predicting disease progression would allow for targeted preventive therapy. The aim of this study was to monitor disease progression in patients on a maintenance program and determine the levels of specific bacteria in subgingival plaque samples and then examine the ability of the clinical parameters of disease and levels of specific bacteria in the plaque samples to predict disease prog

Association of three bacterial species and periodontal status in Chinese adults: an epidemiological approach.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia are oral pathogens associated with periodontitis. The association between these three bacteria and periodontal disease has been reported in populations of many countries. However, corresponding data in Chinese populations are still lacking. The aim of this study was to detect these pathogens in subgingival plaque collected from 468 subjects with chronic periodontitis in a group of Chinese adults by using a PCR method and to determine the degree of association between the target bacteria and periodontal st

Genetic Polymorphism of IL-1A, IL-1B and TNFA Predicting the Presence of Periodontopathogenic Bacteria.

Background/Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by complex interactions between periodontal pathogens and the host immune response. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly interleukins, may influence bacterial colonization and disease expression, but their association with specific periodontal pathogens remains unclear. This study investigated the associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms in IL-1A, IL-1B, and TNFA and the presence of key periodontopathogenic bacteria in patients from Croatia. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 63 particip

Comparison of Two Different Sampling Methods for Subgingival Plaque: Subgingival Paper Points or Mouthrinse Sample?

BACKGROUND: The collection of subgingival plaque samples with paper points is time-consuming and accident-sensitive. However, the collection of saliva is simple and contains pathogens of all intraoral surfaces. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a sampling strategy with mouthrinse (mouthrinse sample [MSP]; test) leads to results comparable with standard sampling method (multiple site test from the deepest pocket of each quadrant [MT4]; control). METHODS: In 50 patients with periodontitis, subgingival plaque was sampled from the deepest pocket of each quadrant by using paper point
