Speed from fossil trackways: calculations not validated by extant birds on compliant substrates.

Fossil trackways serve as a valuable tool in understanding the behaviour and locomotion of extinct animals. Calculating speeds from trackways has become a standard approach, particularly for dinosaurs. However, the original equation was derived from predominantly mammalian data. There have been few validation studies using modern birds, the descendants of theropod dinosaurs. We used high-speed video recordings of two helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris) traversing mud of varying consistency. Associated trackways were digitized using photogrammetry, and stride and track lengths were measured

Review of wing morphology in fossil and modern species of humpbacked flies (Diptera: Phoridae).

BACKGROUND: The wing veins of known fossil and living phorids are reduced, making them difficult to homologise. Consequently, different interpretations have led to much confusion over the years. However, veins are crucial for phylogenetic and taxonomy studies, especially for fossils. We addressed these challenges by studying Cretaceous specimens, which exhibit fewer reductions in wing veins compared to modern fauna, along with post-Cretaceous specimens that display recent wing patterns. Furthermore, we examined related families such as Ironomyiidae, Platypezidae, Opetiidae, and Lonchopteridae

The first preserved nasal cavity in the human fossil record: The Neanderthal from Altamura.

The nose of Neanderthals and its possible adaptation to harsh climatic conditions is a longstanding matter of debate in paleoanthropology. Here, we present and describe the complete inner nasal structures of the early Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura, southern Italy. It represents evidence hitherto unavailable, both for this species and the human fossil record in general, and sheds light on the possible influence of respiratory adaptations on the characteristic Neanderthal facial morphology. Part of the debate has revolved around inner nasal traits proposed as unique adaptations (autapomorph

Soft-tissue fossilization illuminates the stepwise evolution of the ray-finned fish brain.

A complex brain is central to the success of backboned animals. However, direct evidence bearing on vertebrate brain evolution comes almost exclusively from extant species, leaving substantial knowledge gaps. Although rare, soft-tissue preservation in fossils can yield unique insights on patterns of neuroanatomical evolution. Paleontological evidence from an exceptionally preserved Pennsylvanian (∼318 Ma) actinopterygian, Coccocephalus, calls into question prior interpretations of ancestral actinopterygian brain conditions. However, the ordering and timing of major evolutionary innovations, su

Nasopharyngeal morphology contributes to understanding the "muddle in the middle" of the Pleistocene hominin fossil record.

The late archeologist Glynn Isaac first applied the term "muddle in the middle" to a poorly understood period in the Middle Pleistocene human fossil record. This study uses the nasopharyngeal boundaries as a source of traits that may inform this unclear period of human evolution. The nasopharynx lies at the nexus of several vital physiological systems, yet relatively little is known about its importance in human evolution. We analyzed a geographically diverse contemporary Homo sapiens growth series (n = 180 adults, 237 nonadults), Homo neanderthalensis (La Chapelle aux Saints 1, La Ferrassie 1

Morphological affinities of a fossil ulna (KNM-WS 65401) from Buluk, Kenya.

The morphological affinities of a primate proximal ulna (KNM-WS 65401) recovered from the late Early Miocene site Buluk, Kenya, are appraised. Nineteen three-dimensional landmarks on ulnae from 36 extant anthropoid species (n = 152 individuals) and KNM-WS 65401, as well as a subset of 14 landmarks on six ulnae belonging to other East African Miocene catarrhine taxa, were collected. To quantify ulnar shape, three-dimensional geometric morphometric techniques were used and linear dimensions commonly cited in the literature were derived from the landmark data. KNM-WS 65401 is situated between mon

Rarity of congenital malformation and deformity in the fossil record of vertebrates - A non-human perspective.

OBJECTIVE: A malformed pectoral joint of the middle Devonian antiarch fish Asterolepis ornata is described, and a survey of congenital malformations in the fossil record is provided. MATERIALS: The specimen of A. ornata (MB.f.73) from Ehrman in Latvia, stored at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Germany. METHODS: A. ornata was macroscopically and radiologically investigated, and the overview on congenital malformation was based on an extensive literature survey. RESULTS: In the deformed joint of A. ornata, the articular surfaces and muscle attachment sites are greatly reduced, indicating re

Cranial nerves in the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, and in fossil relatives (Osteichthyes: Dipnoi).

Three systems, two sensory and one protective, are present in the skin of the living Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, and in fossil lungfish, and the arrangement and innervation of the sense organs is peculiar to lungfish. Peripheral branches of nerves that innervate the sense organs are slender and unprotected, and form before any skeletal structures appear. When the olfactory capsule develops, it traps some of the anterior branches of cranial nerve V, which emerged from the chondrocranium from the lateral sphenotic foramen. Cranial nerve I innervates the olfactory organ enclosed w

New insights on equid locomotor evolution from the lumbar region of fossil horses.

The specialization of equid limbs for cursoriality is a classic case of adaptive evolution, but the role of the axial skeleton in this famous transition is not well understood. Extant horses are extremely fast and efficient runners, which use a stiff-backed gallop with reduced bending of the lumbar region relative to other mammals. This study tests the hypothesis that stiff-backed running in horses evolved in response to evolutionary increases in body size by examining lumbar joint shape from a broad sample of fossil equids in a phylogenetic context. Lumbar joint shape scaling suggests that st

Virtual reconstruction of modern and fossil hominoid crania: consequences of reference sample choice.

Most hominin cranial fossils are incomplete and require reconstruction prior to subsequent analyses. Missing data can be estimated by geometric morphometrics using information from complete specimens, for example, by using thin-plate splines. In this study, we estimate missing data in several virtually fragmented models of hominoid crania (Homo, Pan, Pongo) and fossil hominins (e.g., Australopithecus africanus, Homo heidelbergensis). The aim is to investigate in which way different references influence estimations of cranial shape and how this information can be employed in the reconstruction

Presence of the maxillary sinus in fossil Colobinae (Cercopithecoides williamsi) from South Africa.

Extant cercopithecoid monkeys, except macaques, are distinguished among primates by their lack of paranasal pneumatization, including the maxillary sinus (MS). Analysis of this structure, widespread among Eutheria, suggests that its loss occurred in the cercopithecoid common ancestor; thus, the presence of the MS in macaques is not strictly homologous to that in other primates. CT analysis of the fossil species Victoriapithecus macinnesi supports this view, demonstrating the lack of the MS in this stem cercopithecoid. Recent evidence, however, has documented the presence of the MS in extinct c

Fossil Cercopithecidae from the Hadar Formation and surrounding areas of the Afar Depression, Ethiopia.

Hadar is well known as one of the most productive early hominin sites in the world. Between 1972 and 1994 a large sample of fossil cercopithecid specimens was collected from Hadar and the nearby sites of Geraru, Ahmado, and Leadu. At least five, and possibly six, species are present in the sample, including two chronological subspecies of Theropithecus oswaldi. T. o. cf. darti is known from the Middle Pliocene deposits in the Hadar area, along with Parapapio cf. jonesi, cf. Rhinocolobus turkanaensis, and a new species of Cercopithecoides, C. meaveae. There are also isolated molars from the Mid

Fossil clavicle of a middle Pleistocene hominid from the Central Narmada Valley, India.

The discovery of a Middle Pleistocene hominid clavicle is reported here. This discovery is particularly important because clavicles are hitherto unrepresented in the fossil record of Asia. The Narmada clavicle comes from the Boulder Conglomerate horizon at Hathnora near Hoshangabad in the Central Narmada Valley. This is the same deposit that previously yielded the Homo erectus/archaic Homo sapiens partial cranium, which has recently been dated to between 0.2 and 0.7 ma (million years ago). The specimen has some unusual morphology and is a very short and robust bone, far shorter than even the e

New specimens of the oldest fossil platyrrhine, Branisella boliviana, from Salla, Bolivia.

During the 1992 and 1993 field seasons, several new specimens of Branisella boliviana, the oldest fossil platyrrhine, were discovered in the late Oligocene deposits at Salla, northwestern Bolivia. The new materials are two maxillary fragments and seven mandibular fragments, including P3 and P2, neither of which have previously been recovered. All new and previously reported materials, including the holotype and referred specimens, were apparently recovered from the same horizon, called the Branisella zone (MacFadden et al. [1985] J. Geol. 93:223-250; MacFadden [1990] J. Hum. Evol. 19:7-21. The

Body weight prediction in early fossil hominids: towards a taxon-"independent" approach.

The choice of a model taxon is crucial when investigating fossil hominids that clearly do not resemble any extant species (such as Australopithecus) or show significant differences from modern human proportions (such as Homo habilis OH 62). An "interhominoid" combination is not adequate either, as scaling with body weight is strongly divergent in African apes and humans for most skeletal predictors investigated here. Therefore, in relation to a study of seven long bone dimensions, a new taxon-"independent" approach is suggested. For a given predictor, its taxonomic "independence" is restricted

Exceptional fossils from Peru and an integrative phylogeny reconcile the evolutionary timing and mode of Gavialis and its kin.

The acquisition of a long and slender snout (longirostry) resulted in extremely similar morphology across crocodylians and, therefore, raised a conflict between morphological and molecular phylogenetic hypotheses involving the longirostrine living gharials, Gavialis gangeticus and Tomistoma schlegelii. This discrepancy is not only topological but also concerns divergence time estimates for the crown clade Gavialidae, especially due to the inclusion of other longirostrine forms, ancient 'thoracosaurs'-which introduces significant chronostratigraphic inconsistencies. To contribute to reconciling

Challenges and opportunities of the full phase-out of fossil fuels under the 1.5 °C goal.

The COP28 decision called for transitioning away from fossil fuels, sparking a growing interest in their full phase-out. However, energy system transformation pathways towards a phase-out of fossil fuels, which may reduce the reliance on carbon dioxide removal to meet the 1.5 °C goal, remain unclear. Here, we employ two global energy system models to explore energy system transformations and the challenges and opportunities associated with attaining a full phase-out of fossil fuels. We found that phasing out fossil fuels by 2050 would require accelerating direct and indirect electrification, i

Biogenic and fossil main greenhouse gas emissions of dairy, beef, pig and poultry systems.

Conventional analyses of the carbon footprint of livestock systems do not consider the relationships between the characteristics and sources of each greenhouse gas (GHGs; CH4, N2O, CO2) and the different livestock systems. This study aimed to assess the carbon footprint of a variety of livestock systems, including different animal categories (dairy cattle, beef cattle, pig and poultry) and production circumstances (lowland and mountain areas). An attributional cradle-to-gate-of-the-farm Life Cycle Assessment was used, considering the emission pattern of each GHG and distinguishing fossil and b

Mineralization Controls Informative Biomarker Preservation Associated With Soft Part Fossilization in Deep Time.

Diagenetically mineralized fossil tissues represent invaluable paleobiological evidence of past life. Lipid biomarkers may be identified alongside fossils, yet the relationship between localized, diagenetic mineral precipitation, and lipid preservation remains underexplored. Coprolites (fossilized feces) attract a unique diversity of early diagenetic minerals including carbonates and phosphates, within individual samples, mediating molecular preservation of soluble lipid biomarkers alongside exceptional morphological preservation. Analysis of a well-preserved coprolite from the Carboniferous (
