The social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal staff in out of home care: Walking in two worlds.

BACKGROUND: There is a disproportionate representation of Aboriginal children in the Australian Out of Home Care system. An important strategy to ensure Aboriginal children experience trauma informed care that is culturally situated is to have access to Aboriginal practitioners. The experiences of Aboriginal practitioners working in Aboriginal Out of Home Care have not been explored thoroughly. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This community led research was undertaken on Dharawal Country on the South Coast of the Illawarra region, Australia with an Out of Home Care program managed by an Aboriginal

Transitioning to Adulthood from Foster Care.

Transitional age foster youth do not typically receive the types of family supports their nonfoster peers enjoy. Many foster youth experience multiple adversities and often fare worse than nonfoster peers on long-term functional outcomes. Governments increasingly recognize their responsibility to act as parents for state dependents transitioning to adulthood and the need to provide services to address social/emotional supports, living skills, finances, housing, education, employment, and physical and mental health. More research is needed to inform the development of effective programs. Transi

Social Origins of Developmental Risk for Mental and Physical Illness.

Adversity in early childhood exerts an enduring impact on mental and physical health, academic achievement, lifetime productivity, and the probability of interfacing with the criminal justice system. More science is needed to understand how the brain is affected by early life stress (ELS), which produces excessive activation of stress response systems broadly throughout the child's body (toxic stress). Our research examines the importance of sex, timing and type of stress exposure, and critical periods for intervention in various brain systems across species. Neglect (the absence of sensitive

Safe From Harm? Youth Self-Report of Physical Assault in Child Welfare Placements.

Although most child welfare placements receive a rigorous assessment and ongoing safety monitoring, it is still unclear which is safest in terms of physical abuse. Our goals for this study were to assess the relative risk of physical assault for different child welfare placements in a national sample of youth and examine that risk within placement types for children with various levels of behavioral problems. Unlike previous studies of assault prevalence, we constrained our analysis to youth self-reports of assaults within a current placement to increase validity. Data from the 2010 National S

Examples of individual supported living for adults with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: This article provides a qualitative account of four models of support for adults with intellectual disability in individual supported living (ISL) arrangements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Completion of the first 50 evaluations of 150 arrangements for the third phase of the ISL project provided the examples. RESULTS: Four approaches are described: living alone, co-residency, relationship and host family. Within each type, wide variations occur particularly based on security of tenure, formal and informal support and management variations. CONCLUSION: Fifty evaluations so far illustra

Patterns of maltreatment and diagnosis across levels of care in group homes.

Patterns of Axis I psychiatric diagnosis and maltreatment history were explored among youth in group homes, including match of clinical need to level or restrictiveness of care. Data on demographics, diagnoses, maltreatment, and group home level of care (Level I, II, or III homes, representing lower to higher intensity of supervision and treatment) were obtained from 523 youth who participated in a quasi-experimental study of group homes. Three quarters of youth had a diagnosis and two-thirds of youth had a maltreatment history. Youth in higher level homes had more diagnoses and higher rates o

Attachment security in Georgian foster children: the role of parental sensitivity and child internalizing and externalizing behavior.

The present study examines how children's behavioral problems and different dimensions of foster parents' sensitivity contribute to attachment security in foster children. The sample included 61 foster children, aged 33 to 90 months, and their foster mothers. Higher overall sensitivity, greater supportive presence, and lower hostility of foster mothers were associated with higher attachment security. Supportive presence emerged as a protective factor for attachment security in the context of externalizing behavioral problems. Cluster analysis identified three distinct parenting profiles. Child

Exploring the Relationship Between Foster Care Experiences and HIV Risk Behaviors Among a Sample of Homeless Former Foster Youth.

Recent research shows high rates of poor behavioral health outcomes among homeless former foster youth, including increased risk for HIV-risk behaviors. In the current study, data were collected from 184 youth at drop-in centers in Los Angeles using behavioral health questionnaires to explore the relationships between specific aspects of foster care experiences and engagement in HIV-risk behaviors. Results indicated that youth whose first homelessness experience occurred before leaving foster care were significantly more likely to engage in drug use with sex and exchange sex than those whose f

Practitioner review: Children in foster care--vulnerabilities and evidence-based interventions that promote resilience processes.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of children are placed in foster care (i.e., a kin or nonkin family home other than the biological parent) due to experiences of physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological abuse, and/or neglect. Children in foster care are at increased risk for a host of negative outcomes encompassing emotional, behavioral, neurobiological, and social realms. METHODS: Areas of risk and vulnerability among foster children are described, including emotional and behavioral deficits, impaired neurobiological development, and social relationship deficits. Evidence suggesting the

Understanding problematic eating in out-of-home care: The role of attachment and emotion regulation.

Children living in Out-of-Home Care (OoHC) are thought to be especially vulnerable to developing problematic eating behaviours due to their likelihood of having insecure attachment styles and emotion regulation deficits. Despite this increased risk, our understanding of problematic eating among children in OoHC is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to; (1) Explore the rate of problematic eating behaviours among children living in OoHC, specifically residential and foster care; (2) Investigate how carers manage problematic eating and (3) Understand carers' perceptions of the role of attachmen

Amphetamine addiction and pregnancy. III. One year follow-up of the children. Psychosocial and pediatric aspects.

Sixty-six infants born to amphetamine-addicted mothers were followed during their first year of life. The children were divided into three groups, according to whether or not the mother stopped her abuse in early pregnancy (Group I) or continued (Group II) and whether or not the latter children were placed in foster homes immediately after birth (Group III). All but 2 of 16 mothers in Group I stayed off drugs and mostly met non-addicted friends. In Group II, on the contrary, all but 2 of 36 mothers continued their abuse one year after delivery. At the age of one year, all but one child in Grou

Neonatal integrated home care: nursing without walls.

A Neonatal Integrated Home Care Program was developed to cross-train NICU staff nurses to provide follow-up care for high-risk neonates in the home. Implementation required collaboration of the NICU and the Center for Home Care and Hospice. Initial target populations were premature infants in transition to oral feeds and oxygen-dependent neonates. Staff, parent, and insurer enthusiasm for this innovative program resulted in expansion to serve infants and families with many other care needs. Continuity of care provides an invaluable resource for families at home with their high-risk infants. Ou

Youth Needs at Intake into Trauma-Informed Group Homes and Response to Services: An Examination of Trauma Exposure, Symptoms, and Clinical Impression.

Trauma-informed care is recommended to improve the quality of group home services for youth. Youth exposure to trauma and associated symptoms are important factors involved in making the clinical impression that determines treatment services. This study considered three dimensions of trauma (exposure, symptoms, and clinical impression) to determine associations with behavioral incidents of youth in trauma-informed group homes and how trauma was related to changes in psychopathology from intake to discharge. Archival records of youth (N = 1,096), age 9-18 (M = 15.7 years) who received services

Child welfare outcomes for youth in care as a result of parental death or parental incarceration.

Every day, in the United States, children are removed from their homes and placed into state supervised out-of-home care because of concerns around their safety. These children enter care as a result of child abuse, child neglect, abandonment or some other reasons. Lost in most discussions of out-of-home care is the role that parental incarceration and parental death have on the trajectory of children through the child welfare system. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present study aims to compare youth in foster care as a result of parental death or youth in foster care as a

Multiple trauma exposure and psychosocial functioning in Singaporean children in out-of-home care.

OBJECTIVE: Children in out-of-home care are often exposed to chronic, interpersonal traumas such as abuse and domestic violence. Exposure to more than 1 interpersonal trauma is associated with functional impairments, mental health symptoms, and risk behaviors. Despite the importance of studying trauma in this vulnerable population, very few studies have investigated trauma exposure among children and youth in out-of-home care in Asia. This is the first study to examine the effects of multiple interpersonal trauma exposure in a large sample of children in out-of-home care in Singapore. METHOD:
