Ulnar styloid fractures occur frequently concomitant with distal radial fractures. Although unstable distal radial fractures are mostly surgically treated, ulnar styloid fractures are often ignored. Unstable fractures at the base of the ulnar styloid may lead to persistent ulnar pain, due to distal radioulnar joint instability or ulnar styloid non-union. We retrospectively analyzed a single-surgeon cohort series of surgically treated distal radial fractures on how these concomitant ulnar styloid fractures were regarded: indications for surgery and surgical technique with headless screw fixatio

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate a surgical technique for the treatment of mallet finger fractures using a K-wire stabilization of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint and another K-wire pressing the bone fragment.
METHODS: Between June 2007 and March 2014, 41 patients (28 men, 13 women) with isolated closed mallet finger fracture were treated using two K-wires. In the cohort, the mean joint surface involvement was 44.3% (range: 28-62%). With a mean period of 23.6 months, patient follow-up lasted 13-34 months. The fingers were evaluated for loss of extension and flexi

Patellar fractures are relatively uncommon; transverse displaced patellar fractures need surgical treatment, and the most widely used technique requires the use of metallic hardware. Despite good clinical outcomes, there are some possible complications related to the hardware. In this paper, we report a case of a 61 years-old woman that presented in 2001 with a fracture of the right patella that was treated with metallic hardware in another Hospital. After two months, the patient reported an infection of the hardware that became osteomyelitis, requiring several surgeries before achieving compl

AIMS: This study aimed to demonstrate the promoting effect of elastic fixation on fracture, and further explore its mechanism at the gene and protein expression levels.
METHODS: A closed tibial fracture model was established using 12 male Japanese white rabbits, and divided into elastic and stiff fixation groups based on different fixation methods. Two weeks after the operation, a radiograph and pathological examination of callus tissue were used to evaluate fracture healing. Then, the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were examined in the callus using proteomics. Finally, in vitro cel

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prevalence of renal impairments, the existing literature examining fracture healing in the upper limb in patients with renal impairment is sparse. This study hence aims to investigate the effect of renal impairment on time to fracture healing after distal radius fracture fixation surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients above 50 years old who underwent distal radius fracture fixation via volar plating were included. Time to fracture healing was defined as duration between day of surgery and presence of radiographic union as evidence by bridging of callus or osseous b

BACKGROUND: Mortality rates following hip fractures are decreasing. As these outcomes improve, it increases the potential for further falls and the potential to sustain a periprosthetic fracture. The aim of this study was to analyse the 1 year mortality of periprosthetic fractures around an implant used to treat an extracapsular hip fracture. Secondary outcomes included 30 day mortality, complications and risk factors associated with mortality.
METHODS: A retrospective case note and radiographic review of all patients who presented to a single institution with a periprosthetic femoral fractur

STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study of 50 patients of thoracolumbar fracture dislocation treated at a single institution with short-segment fixation with the inclusion of fracture level.
PURPOSE: To assess the outcomes of including the fracture level in short-segment fixation for thoracolumbar fracture dislocation.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Traditionally, thoracolumbar fracture dislocation is treated with long-segment posterior fixation. However, to save motion segments, short-segment fixation has been used instead in many cases of thoracolumbar trauma.
METHODS: In this study, 50 patie

Hoffa fracture is an unstable intra-articular fracture with significant redisplacement tendency. It is easy to be missed diagnosis when accompanied by distal intercondylar or supracondylar fracture of femur. CT scan is the gold standard for the diagnosis of Hoffa fracture. The treatment principles are anatomic reduction of the articular surface, reliable internal fixation, and early functional activity. At present, the main treatment is arthroscopic screw fixation. During screw fixation, the tail cap of screw should be buried, resulting in non-healing iatrogenic injury of articular cartilage.

BACKGROUND: Mayo type-IIA olecranon fractures are characterized by a transverse or short oblique fracture without articular comminution or ulnohumeral instability. Traditionally, these fractures are treated with a tension-band wiring technique. Despite good rates of fracture union, tension-band wiring is associated with a reoperation rate of 30% to 60%, usually for removal of prominent metalwork. The tension suture technique was developed as an alternative method of fixing Mayo type-IIA fractures using only high-tensile braided nonabsorbable number-2 sutures, with the aim of reducing the reope

Proximal humeral fractures are a commonly encountered injury; however, no consensus has been reached for the ideal treatment. Current surgical fixation options include plate, plate with fibular strut allograft, intramedullary fixation, pinning, suture constructs, and external fixation. Each of these options possesses distinct advantages and disadvantages. With the evolution of implant design, a greater understanding of the mechanisms of failure of fixation, and the ability to preserve fracture biology, the management of proximal humeral fractures with intramedullary fixation has become an acce

Multiple options are available for the fixation of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures; treatment options depend largely on the fracture characteristics, concomitant injuries, and surgeon preference. With an understanding of the options available and the biomechanics involved, appropriate treatment options may be chosen. Although plate and screw constructs provide the strongest fixation for these fractures, many other techniques provide adequate fixation and may be favored for reasons other than biomechanics.

BACKGROUND: Most displaced fractures in children can be managed by closed treatment. Internal fixation of fractures is sometimes required to achieve satisfactory reduction with certain fractures. The aim of this study was to document the rate of complications associated with internal fixation of fractures in the paediatric age group.
METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on 268 consecutive children who had internal fixation of fractures from January 2000 to July 2004. The complications were categorized as major or minor.
RESULTS: The average age was 9.2 years (range, 1.4-16.9). Ther
