During operative treatment for ovarian tumours assistance is frequently required to make decisions regarding malignancy status and the extent of the ensuing procedure. Intra-operative frozen section analysis may be useful, provided there is adequate acquaintance with the correlation between using frozen sections and permanent histopathological sections for diagnosis at the institution where the operation is being undertaken. This retrospective study aimed to determine this correlation. Findings from 131 intra-operative frozen sections were compared with the subsequent diagnosis from permanent

There is a trend toward primary resection without prior colostomy in the surgical treatment of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) that renders evaluation of the initial pathologic specimen of utmost importance. To determine the accuracy of diagnostic methods for HD in routine practice, biopsies and resection specimens of all patients being evaluated for possible HD during a 3-year period were reviewed and correlated. Eighty patients underwent a total of 132 procedures related to the diagnosis or treatment of HD, including 93 intraoperative frozen-section (FS) evaluations. FS analysis was performed on

We report on a 73-year-old patient with formerly diagnosed melanoma and newly recognized tumor formation within the larynx. In a frozen section specimen, there was no indication of malignancy. Differential diagnosis favored a granular cell tumor at first. Immunohistochemistry and histomorphology after tissue transfer into paraffin led to the diagnosis of adult rhabdomyoma. This case report examines the histomorphologic and immunhistochemic differential diagnosis of large-cell laryngeal lesions with special focus on the challenges associated with frozen section specimens.

The diagnosis of head, neck, and endocrine (HNE) malignancies involves the correlation of histologic features with clinical and radiological findings and, ideally, in a multidisciplinary approach. Frozen section examination of HNE lesions from the oral cavity, sinonasal area, pharynx and larynx, salivary gland, or thyroid gland provides an immediate intraoperative evaluation for a tissue diagnosis, specimen margin assessment, tumor depth of invasion, and determining other important histologic features. Frozen sections of the salivary gland tumors help to differentiate benign from malignant and

Neurosarcoidosis is an uncommon but potentially serious manifestation of sarcoidosis. Diagnosis may be particularly challenging especially when neurosarcoidosis occurs in isolation or is the initial presentation of the systemic disease. The authors take this opportunity to report a case of neurosarcoidosis, presenting as the first manifestation of the disease, diagnosed on frozen section, occurring in a 43-year-old male patient with no past history or manifestation of sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) relies on complete frozen tissue sections for the unique combination of high cure rates and tissue preservation.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify and characterize the tissue sectioning process in MMS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred eighty-four tissue blocks were analyzed. The histotechnician measured the depth cut into the tissue block for every section placed on the slide. The surgeon identified complete sections.
RESULTS: First-stage complete sections were achieved at 285 μm. The ear and hair-bearing cheek required increased depth of sectioning compar

PURPOSE: To analyze the diagnostic accuracy of frozen section in orbital and adnexal malignancies.
METHODS: A total of 55 cases between January 2006 and December 2011 for which intraoperative frozen section was performed for various orbital and adnexal lesions were included in the study. The frozen section diagnosis was compared with the permanent section diagnosis. Margin clearance was also compared between the two. Data were analysed using SPSS version 14. Odds ratio and cross-tabulation was used to perform the analysis.
RESULTS: The mean age at presentation was 51.46 ± 20 years. Eyelid wa

PURPOSE: Intraoperative frozen section (FS) is an effective diagnostic test for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). We evaluated the diagnostic characteristics of single- and multiplex-site intraoperative FS, and evaluated the results of single-site FS combined with those of C-reactive protein (CRP) level and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) for assessing PJI.
METHODS: We studied 156 painful joint arthroplasties in 152 consecutive patients presenting for revision total joint arthroplasty due to PJI. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to determine the optimal cutoff valu

OBJECTIVES: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) examination in breast carcinoma is crucial to spare patients unnecessary lymph node (LN) dissection. The specificity and accuracy of SLN examination by frozen section has been variable in many studies. This study aims to describe our experience in frozen section (FS) analysis of SLN.
METHODS: We have retrospectively analyzed data from 449 axillary SLN subjected to FS examination from 440 patients with breast cancer. All patients had free axillary LN clinically.
RESULTS: Out of 449 cases, no false positive cases were found on FS (specificity of 100 %). Tw

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to determine the accuracy and validity of frozen section analysis of endometrial curettings in differentiating between abnormal intrauterine and ectopic pregnancies.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the database of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in our institute was performed from January 1998 to September 1999. In 70 women with a suspected ectopic pregnancy a diagnostic curettage was sent for frozen section examination because products of conception could not be identified macroscopically in the curettings. Routine paraffin fixation speci

INTRODUCTION: A total of 80-90% of all testicular masses are malignant germ cell tumors. Benign testicular lesions are recognized in approximately 10-20% enabling a testis-preserving surgery on the findings of frozen section examination (FSE). However, there are only sparse information with regard to the reliability of FSE in testicular tumors of uncertain dignity. Therefore, we retrospectively reviewed our experience concerning the reliability of FSE in primary testicular tumors by comparing each FSE result to the final diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a diagnostic or staging option in the treatment of patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) and is investigated intensively. A positive SLNB has appeared to identify patients who might have benefited from a lymph node dissection (LND). Intraoperative frozen section analysis (FSA) of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) during surgery would allow SLNB and LND to be performed in the same procedure. In the current study, we tested the reliability of FSA on the sentinel lymph node in patients with CMM.
METHODS: Before definitive treatment of t

Frozen section diagnosis of a palpable mass in the breast provides a useful rapid histologic finding for the surgeon to make intraoperative decisions. A deferred diagnosis during frozen section, in a small number of instances, is necessary because of real histologic problems and too small lesions or too small sample size. The surgeon and the pathologist must each accept certain responsibilities if the patient is to receive the maximum benefit from the frozen section method. The surgeon should also realize that it is the pathologist who must decide if a given specimen can be frozen and interpre

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) and its variants, such as enhanced GFP (EGFP), have been introduced into mammalian cells by transgenes, e.g., to distinguish donor from host cells after transplantation. Free GFP is extremely soluble and leaks out from liquid-covered cryostat sections so that fixation of whole organs before sectioning has been mandatory. This precludes the analysis of serial sections with respect to fixation-sensitive enzyme activities and antigens. We describe here a vapor fixation for sections from unfixed cryostat blocks of tissue that allows unrestricted enzyme and immunohis

Lymphoid tissue of 51 patients with Hodgkin's disease was studied with immunohistological, enzyme histochemical and rosetting techniques for the detection of B and T cells in frozen sections. In lymph nodes of patients with lymphocyte predominance type of Hodgkin's disease, the majority of the lymphocytes in the involved areas were normal B lymphocytes of polyclonal origin. This was also true for nodular sclerosis cases with a predominance of lymphocytes. Surrounding Sternberg-Reed cells small clusters of T lymphocytes could be demonstrated. In mixed cellularity and also in nodular sclerosis w
