The authors report an unusual case of Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS). Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scan of the craniofacial region and surgical correction of enophthalmos were performed. Results after the operative intervention included persistent palpebral edema and ecchymosis and transient choroid vasculitis of the right eye, highlighted with echography and fluorescein angiography. The fundus oculi examination showed retinal choroid folds. Immunological test results were weakly positive. The authors conclude enophthalmos, associated with right side hemi atrophy, and the t…

PURPOSE: To provide a more sophisticated explanation of the optics involved when retinal 'shadows' are seen in scanning laser ophthalmoscopic images during the wear of multisegment and diffusion optic spectacle lenses.
METHODS: Images were recorded with a system that uses a scanning broad line fundus imaging principle in participants with undilated pupils wearing a multisegment spectacle lens. The live infra-red preview display of the system was also acquired during image recording. Ray-tracing and image simulations were performed, assuming a Maxwellian illumination system in which a source w

Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) is a non-invasive retinal imaging technique that helps visualize naturally occurring fluorophores, such as lipofuscin, and provides valuable insight into retinal diseases-particularly inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). FAF is especially useful in detecting subclinical or early-stage IRDs and in monitoring disease progression over time. In Stargardt disease, areas of decreased autofluorescence correlate with disease progression and have been proposed as a biomarker for future clinical trials. FAF can also help differentiate Stargardt disease from other macular dyst

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a worldwide eye disease that can cause irreversible vision loss. Early detection of glaucoma is important to reduce vision loss, and retinal fundus image examination is one of the most commonly used solutions for glaucoma diagnosis due to its low cost. Clinically, the cup-disc ratio of fundus images is an important indicator for glaucoma diagnosis. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of algorithms for segmentation and recognition of the optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC), but these algorithms generally have poor universality, segmentation performance,

INTRODUCTION: Pterygium surgery is a closed globe surface surgery. Although it is perfectly standard and followed by excellent results, it is not exempt from the general rule that there is no surgery without risk. It therefore seems important to integrate simulation as a pedagogical tool for training ophthalmology residents in pterygium surgery.
AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of procedural simulation as a training tool for pterygium surgery.
RESULTS: During the study period, eight residents participated in the three workshops. The global assessment of residents' knowledge showed a mean s

PURPOSE: Inside the eye light can be reflected multiple times due to light-tissue interactions and the spherical geometry of the eye. Due to these optical properties, a defined retinal area is not only illuminated by direct light but also by indirect, reflected light from the inner side of the eyewall. During illumination for ophthalmic surgery, this could lead to an unintended increase in intraocular retinal irradiance, which was already discussed in previous studies but without a detailed consideration of spectral differences and a potential influence of pigmentation. In this study this effe

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common eye conditions among diabetic patients. However, vision loss occurs primarily in the late stages of DR, and the symptoms of visual impairment, ranging from mild to severe, can vary greatly, adding to the burden of diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice. Deep learning methods based on retinal images have achieved remarkable success in automatic DR grading, but most of them neglect that the presence of diabetes usually affects both eyes, and ophthalmologists usually compare both eyes concurrently for DR diagnosis, leaving correlations bet

Ninety patients with aphakia and diabetes were examined. Intraocular pressure was normal in 30 patients, in 30 aphakia was concomitant with primary glaucoma, and 30 presented with aphakic glaucoma. Fundus oculi was examined with a slit lamp and +60 D lens, gonioscopy and cycloscopy were carried out using a contact prism proposed by the authors. Aphakic glaucoma developed as a result of changes in the anterior chamber corner: coarse postoperative cicatrices and vitreo-corneal adhesions. Diabetic retinopathy was equally incident in all three groups of patients. Changes in the ciliary vessels can…
