INTRODUCTION: Kodamaea ohmeri is an emerging opportunistic yeast pathogen associated with high mortality yet reports of nosocomial outbreaks-particularly in neonatal intensive care units-remain scarce.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified five cases of K. ohmeri fungemia occurring within a 2-month period in the NICU of a tertiary general hospital in China. Clinical and epidemiological data were collected. Isolates were identified by MALDI-TOF MS and characterized by CHROMagar™ Candida chromogenic medium, antifungal susceptibility testing (Sensititre YeastOne™), and microsatellite genotyping

Lomentospora prolificans is an environmental mold that is increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Here we present a case of disseminated Lomentospora in a patient with refractory acute myeloid leukemia. In general, disseminated mold infections can be challenging to diagnose. The diagnosis in this case was delayed due to a false positive direct from a blood culture multiplex polymerase chain reaction result for Candida tropicalis due to amplification of nonviable DNA and misidentification of conidia as yeast forms on gram stain. The Lomento

Fusarium thapsinum is an uncommon cause of invasive fungal disease. Only one case of a hematological patient has been described previously. Most of cases of Fusarium infection is keratitis affecting healthy people, but fungemia is usually produced in immunossupressed patients, especially in those with neutropenia and/or hematological malignancies. The treatment of this infection is difficult due to the fact that these fungi show high MICs to almost all antifungal drugs. We report a case of F. thapsinum fungemia with a fatal outcome, in a patient with lung cancer. The patient developed fever, m

Candida lusitaniae fungemia is a serious infection that is rarely reported in children. The aim of this study is to describe a case series of C. lusitaniae fungemia and review previous publications regarding this rare pathogen. This is a multicenter case series of children diagnosed with C. lusitaniae fungemia. A total of 18 cases that occurred over a 15-year period in five tertiary hospitals were included. Additionally, a review of the literature regarding C. lusitaniae fungemia in children was performed. A total of 18 cases were enrolled; 11/18 (61%) were males, with a mean age of 2.3 years.

Fungemia in hematologic malignancies (HM) has high mortality. This is a retrospective cohort of adult patients with HM and fungemia between 2012 and 2019 in institutions of Bogotá, Colombia. The epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological characteristics are described, and risk factors related to mortality are analyzed. One hundred five patients with a mean age of 48 years (SD 19.0) were identified, 45% with acute leukemia and 37% with lymphomas. In 42%, the HM was relapsed/refractory, 82% ECOG > 3, and 35% received antifungal prophylaxis; 57% were in neutropenia, with an average duration o

The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India had brought with it a surge of 'black fungus' co-infection, which is a misnomer for mucormycosis. The present case illustrates the 'real black fungus' infection in a 50-year old male patient with COVID-19 pneumonia, who otherwise had no significant previous medical history. He was admitted on day 8 of COVID-19 illness and was intubated due to persistently low oxygen saturation. Blood cultures were positive for flask-shaped dematiaceous budding yeasts with pseudohyphae formation, which grew as brown-black fuzzy colonies on Sabouraud dextrose aga

Retrospective descriptive study carried out to determine the characteristics of fungemia in 285 cancer patients hospitalized from 2012 to 2016 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN). Demographic, clinical and microbiological information was evaluated. Fungemia by C. albicans predominated in patients with solid tumors and without neutropenia, while those caused by C. tropicalis predominated in patients with hematological neoplasia and neutropenia. C. tropicalis was the agent isolated in most cases (47.0%). Fungemia increased over time in patients without neutropenia. Funge

OBJECTIVES: Candida lusitaniae is an opportunistic yeast pathogen in certain high-risk patient populations/cohorts. The species exhibits an unusual antifungal susceptibility profile with tendency to acquire rapid resistance. Here, we describe prevalence of C. lusitaniae in clinical specimens in Kuwait, its antifungal susceptibility profile and role in neonatal fungemia.
METHODS: Clinical C. lusitaniae isolates recovered from diverse specimens during 2011 to 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. All isolates were identified by germ tube test, growth on CHROMagar Candida and by Vitek 2 yeast iden

Cryptococcosis is a systemic mycosis with a chronic or subacute progression caused by the inhalation of dehydrated yeasts or basidiospores. The causative agents are C. gattii and C. neoformans. The latter is more commonly associated with cellular immunodeficiency and is not rare in patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Cryptococcosis is common in pregnant women with AIDS; however, it is uncommon for the placenta to be affected, with few reported cases in the literature. We present the case of a pregnant woman with AIDS who had placental and pulmonary cryptococcosis associate

BACKGROUND: Those infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a higher risk of opportunistic infections. The risk is related to the level of immunosuppression. We report a case of a young male with the unusual scenario of three opportunistic infections occurring simultaneously: Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis and Cryptosporidiosis. Histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are major causes of morbimortality in immunocompromised patients due to HIV infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient with HIV infection with a CD4 T lymphocyte cell (CD4) count of 2 cells/mm3, who presen

Saprochaete capitata (S. capitata) is a very rare fungal pathogen that causes disseminated opportunistic infections in patients with hematologic malignancies. Fever resistant to broad-spectrum antibiotic and antifungal treatment is common in the presence of fungemia during the period of profound neutropenia. We describe three cases of leukemic children who died from S. capitata fungemia following a first febrile neutropenic episode after the induction of chemotherapy. S. capitata fungemia is an emergent infection associated with high mortality and low susceptibility to fluconazole and echinoca

Kodamaea (Pichia) ohmeri is a yeast species that has not been reported to be a frequent cause of human infections. The current report describes a case of fungemia caused by K. ohmeri in a 3-year-old female patient hospitalized in the public hospital Maria Alice Fernandes, Natal, RN, Brazil. The patient had previously received antimicrobial therapy due to a peritoneal infection and nosocomial pneumonia, and had a central venous catheter implanted. Kodamaea ohmeri was isolated from blood and the tip of the catheter, 48 h after its implantation. The yeast was identified by standard microbiologica

A bloodstream infection due to Candida haemulonii afflicting a patient with fever and a medical history of megaloblastic anemia is reported. The clinical isolate was misidentified by the API 20C and VITEK identification systems. The results of susceptibility tests showed that the MIC of amphotericin B for C. haemulonii was 4 microg/ml. Additional susceptibility testing procedures based on the use of antibiotic medium 3 and Iso-Sensitest broth were performed, and killing curves were determined. Two collection strains of C. haemulonii were employed as controls. The three isolates exhibited resis

Two cases, probably related, of fungemia due to Scedosporium prolificans are described in two patients with acute leukemia. Both were admitted to the hematological ward in nearby rooms, during building work in the hospital. After a previous bacterial sepsis in the neutropenic phase, which improved with antibiotic treatment, the respiratory status in both patients deteriorated presenting acute dypsnea, with a lung infiltrate in one of them. A few hours later both patients died. Blood cultures were positive for S. prolificans. These two new cases of S. prolificans infection stress the importance

Four isolates of Candida albicans recovered from the blood and cerebral spinal fluid of a 66-year-old man during episodes of systemic infection separated by 3 months and antifungal therapy were analyzed by a variety of molecular typing methods. All four isolates were shown to represent the same strain, indicating a relapse of infection rather than reinfection.

Two granulocytopenic patients in whom fungemia persisted despite therapy with deoxycholate amphotericin B were subsequently successfully treated by daily intravenous administration of amphotericin B entrapped in sonicated liposomes made of egg yolk lecithin, cholesterol and stearylamine in a molar ratio of 4:3:1. High serum concentrations of amphotericin B could be maintained in both patients during therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and were associated with high in vitro antifungal activity. Liposomal amphotericin B was tolerated much better than the deoxycholate preparation. These finding
