A clinical evaluation of a bioresorbable membrane and porous hydroxyapatite in the treatment of human molar class II furcations.

BACKGROUND: The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is predictable regeneration of a functional attachment apparatus destroyed as a result of periodontitis. Reconstructive procedures have been used with varying success during the past decades to accomplish this goal. AIM: To evaluate whether the use of porous hydroxyapatite alone or a bioresorbable membrane alone would enhance the clinical results in the treatment of class II furcation defects in human lower molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with chronic periodontitis, aged between 39 and 49 years, with a pair of similar bilat

Vital Root Resection for Management of Furcation Involvement in a Mandibular Molar with Radix Entomolaris: A Case Report.

Treatment of Class III furcation defects involving the supernumerary third roots, a condition also called radix entomolaris (RE), of mandibular first molars is challenging. A 44-year-old nonsmoking Japanese woman presented with discomfort in the mandibular left first molar. A Nabers probe was used to assess furcation involvement, and horizontal probe penetration from the midlingual to distolingual region of the furcation was observed. CBCT revealed a distolingual RE with significant bone destruction around it, indicative of a through-and-through furcation defect. A treatment approach known as

Relationship between the radiographic periodontal defect angle and healing after treatment.

This study radiographically evaluated the correlation between the changes in alveolar bone level occurring in bony defects after periodontal therapy and the corresponding pretreatment defect angles. The defect angle was defined by the bony defect surface and the root surface. The changes were determined from identically exposed and processed radiographs obtained just prior to surgery and 15 to 18 months later. The defect angle was clearly correlated to the radiographic changes in alveolar bone level. Most defects with an angle less than 45 degree showed a gain of bone while defects with the la

From Basic Science to Clinical Practice: A Review of Current Periodontal/Mucogingival Regenerative Biomaterials.

Periodontitis is a dysbiosis-driven inflammatory disease affecting the tooth-supporting tissues, characterized by their progressive resorption, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss. A step-wise therapeutic approach is employed for periodontitis. After an initial behavioral and non-surgical phase, intra-bony or furcation defects may be amenable to regenerative procedures. This review discusses the regenerative technologies employed for periodontal regeneration, highlighting the current limitations and future research areas. The search, performed on the MEDLINE database, has identified the av
