We developed a model of infection, using 1 Fusarium species (F. moniliforme) and 2 Scedosporium species (S. apiospermum and S. prolificans), in wild-type and Toll-deficient Drosophila melanogaster flies by injecting them with a standardized conidia inoculum. Wild-type flies were resistant to infection with both S. apiospermum and S. prolificans but were susceptible to infection with F. moniliforme. When Toll-deficient flies were infected with any of the 3 pathogens, the result was acute infection and high mortality rates. Voriconazole mixed in fly food significantly protected flies infected wi

Foot infections are common and serious complications of diabetic patients. We report the case of a 68-year-old patient with a diabetic foot infection that developed into a gangrenous necrosis. Fusarium spp. was isolated on two successive occasions with no other associated microorganisms. Histopathology demonstrated invasion of the fungus into the tisssue. These findings suggested an infection rather than colonization. A detailed morphological study showed that the isolate was Fusarium acutatum, which was confirmed by rDNA sequencing. This fungus is found only in Asia and has not been previousl

Fusarium culmorum F1 was found to produce and secrete into the culture medium several of 5-n-alkylresorcinols. The amount of resorcinolic lipids was 5.3 microg/g and 0.9 microg/l in mycelium and in post-culture liquid, respectively. First of all F. culmorum F1 produces saturated homologues with C15 to C25 side chains. The extract from the medium contained only homologues with shorter carbon chains (C13 to C17).

Chlamydospores of Fusarium sulphureum were formed within 72 h by incubating macroconidia at 37 degrees C in stationary culture in a medium containing mannitol and inorganic salts. The conversion process was dependent on inoculum level, temperature, aeration, and the presence of an external source of nitrogen and carbon. Chlamydospore formation was not inhibited by an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation, 2,4-dinitrophenol, or by inhibitors of bacterial cell wall synthesis; however, it was affected by inhibitors of respiration and of protein and chitin synthesis.

World literature on the subject reports 112 cases of keratomycosis by Fusarium, including the two cases described in this paper and some personal communications. In most of these cases (60--70%) there is a history of trauma inflicted by vegetable matter or by foreign bodies introduced into the eye (metal, sand, stone, etc.). The different species of Fusarium isolated are F. episphaeria, F. dimerum, F. moniliforme, F. nivale, F. oxysporum, and F. solani. The treatment recommended in a 5-percent suspension or unguent of pimaricin (natamycin).

A Florida cattle rancher undergoing treatment for lumbar osteomyelitis presented with severe neutropenia and febrile episodes after being discharged on a seven-week course of intravenous (IV) vancomycin and cefepime. Upon admission, antibiotics were changed, and micafungin and filgrastim were added. Several days later, he had a normalizing absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and improving fevers with an overall good clinical appearance. Discharge seemed near, but he continued to complain of nasal congestion and mild oromaxillary pain. In caution, a CT maxillofacial scan and ENT evaluation were per

Stem canker of coffee (SCC) is caused by Fusarium solani, F. decemcellulare, and F. lateritium, which induces symptoms such as cankers, wilting, yellowing, and dieback of plagiotropic and orthotropic twigs, leading to the death of the coffee plants. The absence of a standardized inoculation method to assess the disease hampers the development and implementation of effective strategies to manage and mitigate the impact of SCC. This study evaluated the efficacy of three inoculation methods in inducing SCC, and it was carried out in both laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The conidial inoculat

The capacity to form biofilms is a common trait among many microorganisms present on Earth. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that the fatal pine pitch canker agent, Fusarium circinatum, can lead a biofilm-like lifestyle with aggregated hyphal bundles wrapped in extracellular matrix (ECM). Our research shows F. circinatum's ability to adapt to environmental changes by assuming a biofilm-like lifestyle. This was demonstrated by varying metabolic activities exhibited by the biofilms in response to factors like temperature and pH. Further analysis revealed that while planktonic cel

PURPOSE: To evaluate an outbreak of endophthalmitis caused by Fusarium oxysporum after cataract surgery.
METHODS: In the present study, we conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of cases of endophthalmitis that developed after cataract surgery. All eyes underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation (PEA + IOL) at a single eye clinic on the same date. Symptoms of endophthalmitis occurred 21.5 ± 3.4 days after the cataract surgery.
RESULTS: Nine eyes of 9 patients with fungal endophthalmitis (5 males and 4 females) were enrolled in the current study. The mean

Fusarium is one of the most important genera of plant-pathogenic fungi in the world and arguably the world's most important mycotoxin-producing genus. Fusarium species produce a staggering array of toxic metabolites that contribute to plant disease and mycotoxicoses in humans and other animals. A thorough understanding of the mycotoxin potential of individual species is crucial for assessing the toxicological risks associated with Fusarium diseases. There are thousands of reports of mycotoxin production by various species, and there have been numerous attempts to summarize them. These efforts

Fungi of the genus Fusarium are well known as major plant pathogens but also cause a broad spectrum of human infections. Sixty-three clinical isolates, collected during 2014-2017, were identified using a part of the TEF1 gene as barcoding marker. Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC, n = 41, 65%) showed to be the dominant etiological agent, followed by F. solani species complex (FSSC, n = 14, 22%) and F. oxysporum species complex (FOSC, n = 7, 11%). There was one strain belonging to F. lateritium species complex (FLSC, n = 1, 1.5%). For final identification, a phylogenetic tree was constru

Fusariosis is an infection that is caused by fungi of the Fusarium genus. It is the second most common fungus that is associated with human fungal infections, usually in immunocompromised individuals. The incidence of such infections has been increasing, including in immunocompetent hosts. Studies of host-pathogen interactions are scarce, and the pathophysiology of the disease is unknown. One limitation of such studies is the lack of adequate techniques for mammalian infection, in which no standardized protocols have been established with fungi with a focus on the respiratory tract. The aim of

The Fusarium species are one of the most common opportunistic fungal infections occurring in immunocompromised patients and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Common sites of infection include blood, skin, nasal passages, lungs, bone, and other visceral organs. There is a paucity of literature on Fusarium infections in the brain, and the true nature and extent of central nervous system involvement is not well described. To the authors' knowledge, there have been no reported cases of Fusarium infection of the spine. The authors report the case of a man with acute myeloblastic leu

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of a case series of fungal keratitis associated with Fusarium spp.., in Spain during the years 2012 to 2014.
METHODS: A retrospective study of a case series was conducted on a systematic random sample of 10% of patients identified in Health Centres of provincial capitals (n=250). The centres were asked whether they had been presented with cases of Fusarium spp. keratitis characterised by microbiological methods. Of the 23 centres that responded, 14 had detected cases, with 13 of them accepting to participate, and 11 of them c

The number of emerging organisms causing invasive fungal infections has increased in the last decades. These etiological agents include Scedosporium, Fusarium and mucorales. All of them can cause disseminated, virulent, and difficult-to treat infections in immunosuppressed patients, the most affected, due to their resistance to most available antifungal agents. Current trends in transplantation including the use of new immunosuppressive treatments, the common prescription of antifungal agents for prophylaxis, and new ecological niches could explain the emergence of these fungal pathogens. Thes

UNLABELLED: We report the successful management of a rare case of bilateral post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) Fusarium oxysporum keratitis and propose a therapeutic strategy. A 19-year-old white man with no systemic diseases was referred to our emergency service 3 days after microkeratome-assisted myopic bilateral LASIK correction. He complained of blurred-vision, photophobia, and ocular pain. Clinical findings (satellite lesions, hypopyon) suggested fungal keratitis. Flaps were immediately lifted and rinsed with povidone-iodine 10%, and intensive topical and systemic and combined anti

PURPOSE: Fusarium solani and F. oxysporum were the causative organisms of the 2005/2006 outbreak of contact lens-associated fungal keratitis in the United States. The present study was an investigation of the ability of F. oxysporum grown as a biofilm on silicone hydrogel contact lenses to induce keratitis.
METHODS: A clinical isolate of F. oxysporum was grown as a biofilm on lotrafilcon A contact lenses, and a 2-mm diameter punch was placed on the abraded corneal epithelium of either untreated or cyclophosphamide-treated C57BL/6 mice or of IL-1R1(-/-), MyD88(-/-), TLR2(-/-), or TLR4(-/-) mic

A 5-year-old boy had a 10-month remission of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) after chemotherapy. Re-induction chemotherapy was performed for relapse of ALL. Thereafter, he suffered from an episode of neutropenic fever with pneumonia. One week following control of the condition with antibiotics, a 1 x 1-cm, red, painful nodule appeared on the left thigh, which was initially suspected to be Pseudomonas infection. Parenteral ceftazidime and amikacin were administered, but persistent high fever, mild cough, and a few painful erythematous papulonodules on the face and lower extremities appeared se
