Preoperative diagnosis of cholecystocolonic fistula (CCF) is difficult and the contribution of gallbladder cancer or colon cancer is unclear when there is associated malignancy. We present a case that was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis associated with CCF by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) preoperatively and malignant neoplasm during emergency surgery. She was finally diagnosed with gallbladder cancer after the operation and underwent a two-stage surgery for regional lymph node dissection. Gallbladder cancer can be a primary malignant cancer causing CCF, whereas MDCT is useful for

Extraskeletal tumors containing multinucleated, osteoclast-like giant cells (OGCs) are uncommon. These neoplasms are most frequently reported in the breast and pancreas. Recently, some authors have suggested that carcinomas containing OGCs may represent a distinct clinicopathological entity with a more favorable prognosis. Occurrence in the gallbladder is extremely rare, with only one previous case. We report here on an additional case of gallbladder carcinoma with an infiltrate of OGCs. A 72-year-old woman presented with postprandial abdominal pain and was found to have a mass in the body of

Benign non-epithelial neoplasms of the gallbladder are rare. A case of incidental neurofibroma of the gallbladder in a 44-year-old man without neurofibromatosis 1 is reported. The intramural tumor, located in the neck of the gallbladder, was associated with lithiasis, chronic cholecystitis and localized fundic adenomyomatosis. Seven cases including the present one are reviewed. The seven patients ranged in age from 44 to 77 years, with an average age of 61.6 years. Four of the seven patients were women. Five tumors appeared as mural nodules, and two showed intraluminal growth. The most common

We present the rare case of a 79-year-old female patient with the coexistence of gallbladder villous tubular adenoma and rectal villous tubular adenocarcinoma. She initially presented with blood in the stool, prompting a diagnosis of rectal cancer. Further examination revealed findings suggestive of a gallbladder pathology. Subsequent imaging and histopathological analyses confirmed the presence of a gallbladder villous tubular adenoma, high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, and rectal villous tubular adenocarcinoma. Surgical interventions included laparoscopic radical resection of the rectal c

This article reviews a spectrum of gallbladder conditions that are either uncommon or represent unusual manifestations of common diseases. These conditions are divided into four major categories: (a) congenital anomalies and normal variants including duplication, ectopia, and lymphangioma; (b) inflammatory processes and stone-related diseases and complications including adenomyomatosis, emphysematous cholecystitis, xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, gangrenous and hemorrhagic cholecystitis, perforation, gallstone ileus, and Bouveret and Mirizzi syndromes; (c) gallbladder neoplasms including ad

Gallbladder carcinoid tumor is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, usually lacking specific symptoms, as they typically are unassociated with the carcinoid syndrome, despite frequent hepatic spread. The patient was an 81-year-old man with right upper quadrant pain who underwent radical surgery for carcinoid tumor of the gallbladder with liver metastasis (preoperative diagnosis, carcinoma). We analyzed the outcome of previously reported cases of gallbladder carcinoid. Increasing tumor size and depth of invasion progressively compromised the 2-year survival. These findings underscore the importance

INTRODUCTION: Polypoid lesions of the gallbladder can be divided into benign and malignant categories. Malignant polypoid lesions include carcinomas of the gallbladder, which is the fifth most common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract and the most common malignancy of the biliary tract. Benign polypoid lesions of the gallbladder are divided into true tumors and pseudotumors. Pseudotumors account for most of polypoid lesions of the gallbladder, and include polyps, hyperplasia, and other miscellaneous lesions. Adenomas are the most common benign neoplasms of the gallbladder. Cholesterol po

A 77-year-old woman complained of epigastralgia, and a tumor (5 cm in diameter) of the gallbladder neck was detected by image analysis. Following cholecystectomy, the tumor was pathologically diagnosed as intraductal papillary neoplasm (IPN), gastric type, with associated invasive carcinoma. About 10 mo later, intraluminal multiple masses (3 foci, up to 1.8 cm) were noted in the extrahepatic bile duct, and the resected specimen showed that all tumors had similar gross and microscopic features as seen in gallbladder IPN without invasion, and they were synchronous multiple lesions. This case sho

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that cyclin D1 overexpression is involved in the multistep process of gallbladder carcinogenesis and can be used to predict poor prognosis for patients with gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). Cyclin D1 expression was examined immunohistochemically in a series of specimens, including 8 normal epithelia, 8 benign adenomyoma lesions, 6 precancerous adenomas, and 37 carcinomas of the gallbladder. Four of the 6 (67%) adenomas and 15 of the 37 (41%) adenocarcinomas demonstrated cyclin D1 overexpression (>5% nuclear staining), whereas all normal epithelia and

Primary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the gallbladder is an extremely rare disease. We describe a case of a 79-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C-related cirrhosis presenting with acute epigastric pain and laboratory findings consistent with gallstone pancreatitis. He underwent a cholecystectomy, and histopathology review of the surgical specimen revealed a primary MALT lymphoma of the gallbladder. Staging studies revealed no evidence of metastatic disease but incidentally identified a malignancy of the prostate. The patient's gallbladder MALT lymphoma was managed con

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most frequent renal neoplasm, with a high rate of metastasis, especially in the lungs and bones. The gallbladder is one of the rare metastatic sites. We report an 80-year-old woman who presented with chronic right flank pain for the last six months. A computer tomography scan revealed a heterogeneous right renal mass measuring 86 ×76× 68 mm and multi lithiasis in the gallbladder. A right radical nephrectomy, lymphadenectomy, and cholecystectomy were performed. The postoperative clinical course was uneventful, without any complications. The histological results

There is limited information about the molecular changes involved in the pathogenesis of gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). Our recent allelotyping analyses have indicated that chromosome 3p loss of heterozygosity (LOH), including the fragile histidine triad (FHIT) candidate tumor-suppressor gene locus at 3p14.2, is frequently detected in this neoplasm. To investigate the role of the FHIT abnormalities in the multistage sequential development of GBC, 33 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded invasive GBC specimens and 76 accompanying histologically normal (n = 43) and dysplastic (n = 33) epithelia were ex

We evaluated the gallbladders of 121 patients who had well-documented primary sclerosing cholangitis. Sonograms, cholangiograms, and CT scans were reviewed, and the findings were correlated with surgical or autopsy findings, when available. Pathologic examination of the gallbladder was available in 55 (45%) of the 121 patients; of these, 49 (89%) had abnormal gallbladders. Ninety-three of the 121 patients had one or more radiologic examinations of the gallbladder: 77 had sonograms, 80 had cholangiograms, and 18 had CT scans. Seventy-five (62%) of the 121 patients had abnormal gallbladders on h

Most precursor lesions and early cancerous changes in the gallbladder and bile ducts present as clinically/grossly inapparent lesions. Low-grade dysplasia is difficult to define and clinically inconsequential by itself; however, extra sampling is required to exclude accompanying significant lesions. For high-grade dysplasia ('carcinoma in situ'), a complete sampling is necessary to rule out invasion. Tumoral intramucosal neoplasms (ie, intracholecystic and intraductal neoplasia) form radiologically/grossly visible masses, and they account for (present in the background of) about 5% to 10% of i

BACKGROUND: Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasms (ICPNs) are infrequent preinvasive gallbladder lesions. The literature lacks standard reporting criteria and is limited to single-center series and case reports. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the available evidence on their epidemiology, pathology, and possible association between high-grade dysplasia and invasive carcinoma.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched on the June 9, 2025, for "intracholecystic papillary neoplasm" OR "intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasm" OR "ICPN" (PR

Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder is an uncommon neoplasm. We herein report the case of a patient with carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder with chondroid differentiation, treated by cholecystectomy with liver segmentectomy and lymph node dissection for a tumor which occupied the entire gallbladder and spread to the liver. Histologically, the tumor contained two distinct components: a mixture of both well and poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma and sarcomatoid tissue with chondroid differentiation. From a review of the literature, it was seen that carcinosarcomas of the gallbladder could

Carcinosarcomas, often referred to as malignant mixed tumors, are rare neoplasm. We reported herein a carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder in an elderly patient with long-term survival (4 years). The operation carried out was open cholecystectomy under the preoperative diagnosis of chronic cholecystitis and tumor of the gallbladder. Anticancer chemotherapy after cholecystectomy was performed by oral low-dose FT therapy. He was alive with no evidence of disease 48 months after surgery. Long-term survival for only cholecystectomy treatment as in this case may be possible if oral low-dose FT antican

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to clarify clinicopathologic characteristics of synchronous primaries of the extrahepatic bile duct and gallbladder. Understanding multiplicity and its histologic confirmation is an important step for successful surgical management.
METHODS: Of the 190 cases of resection of biliary tract neoplasms in this study, 10 had two separate tumors in the extrahepatic bile duct and gallbladder, which were investigated by the microscopic mapping technique for tumor extent using serial stepwise sectioning of specimens.
RESULTS: Clinical diagnosis was made succe

Background and Clinical Significance: Synchronous gastrointestinal tumors are exceptionally rare, particularly when combining histologically distinct benign and malignant components. Schwannomas represent uncommon mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, most frequently arising in the stomach, while rectal localization is exceedingly unusual. Papillary adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder is an aggressive malignant entity derived from intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasms (ICPNs). The coexistence of these two unrelated neoplasms has not been previously reported, making this case o
