Aberrant hippocampal gamma oscillations in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome: insights from in vitro slice models.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited intellectual disability, caused by the loss of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), which regulates neuronal signaling and plasticity. FXS patients and Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice exhibit sensory hypersensitivity, hyperarousal, and hippocampus-dependent learning deficits. Dysregulated metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) signaling, along with reduced kainate receptor (KAR) function, have been implicated in FXS pathophysiology. Activation of these signaling pathways induce gamm

Transcriptomic profile of Arabidopsis rosette leaves during the reproductive stage after exposure to ionizing radiation.

We attempted to obtain a transcriptomic profile of ionizing radiation-responsive genes in Arabidopsis plants using Affymetrix ATH1 whole-genome microarrays. The Arabidopsis plants were irradiated with 200 Gy gamma rays at the early reproduction stage, 33 days after sowing. Rosette leaves were harvested during the postirradiation period from 36 to 49 days after sowing and used for the microarray analysis. The most remarkable changes in the genome-wide expression were observed at 42 days after sowing (9 days after the irradiation). We identified 2165 genes as gamma-ray inducible and 1735 genes a

Left-dominance for resting-state temporal low-gamma power in children with impaired word-decoding and without comorbid ADHD.

One theory of the origins of reading disorders (i.e., dyslexia) is a language network which cannot effectively 'entrain' to speech, with cascading effects on the development of phonological skills. Low-gamma (low-γ, 30-45 Hz) neural activity, particularly in the left hemisphere, is thought to correspond to tracking at phonemic rates in speech. The main goals of the current study were to investigate temporal low-γ band-power during rest in a sample of children and adolescents with and without reading disorder (RD). Using a Bayesian statistical approach to analyze the power spectral density of E

Test-retest reliability of resting-state magnetoencephalography power in sensor and source space.

Several studies have reported changes in spontaneous brain rhythms that could be used as clinical biomarkers or in the evaluation of neuropsychological and drug treatments in longitudinal studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG). There is an increasing necessity to use these measures in early diagnosis and pathology progression; however, there is a lack of studies addressing how reliable they are. Here, we provide the first test-retest reliability estimate of MEG power in resting-state at sensor and source space. In this study, we recorded 3 sessions of resting-state MEG activity from 24 hea

Task-related reconfiguration patterns of frontoparietal network during motor imagery.

Motor imagery (MI) is closely associated with the frontoparietal network that includes prefrontal and posterior parietal regions. Studying task-related network reconfiguration after brain shifts from the resting state to the MI task is an important way to understand the brain's response process. However, how the brain modulates functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network when it shifts to MI has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, we attempted to characterize the frontoparietal network reconfiguration patterns as the brain transitioned to motor imagery tasks. We performed the

Amplitude without phase: interpersonal movement coordination grades inter-brain coupling.

Interpersonal movement coordination is a foundational feature of human sociality, scaffolding communication, affiliation, and joint action from infancy onward. Whether this behavioral coupling is accompanied by genuine coupling between brains - rather than one manufactured by shared sensory input or motion artifact - has proven difficult to establish. We recorded dual-brain EEG with synchronized head-mounted accelerometry from participant-partner dyads (16 dyads, 155 dyad-condition recordings) across six conditions grading interpersonal coordination from stillness to fully reciprocal joint mov

P2Y1 receptor modulation of the pre-Bötzinger complex inspiratory rhythm generating network in vitro.

ATP is released during hypoxia from the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) and activates purinergic P2 receptors (P2Rs) at unknown loci to offset the secondary hypoxic depression of breathing. In this study, we used rhythmically active medullary slices from neonatal rat to map, in relation to anatomical and molecular markers of the pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötC) (a proposed site of rhythm generation), the effects of ATP on respiratory rhythm and identify the P2R subtypes responsible for these actions. Unilateral microinjections of ATP in a three-dimensional grid within the VLM revealed a "hotspot" w

Human plasma proopiomelanocortin N-terminal peptide and adrenocorticotropin: circadian rhythm, dexamethasone suppression, and corticotropin-releasing hormone stimulation.

The circadian rhythm, suppression with dexamethasone, and stimulation by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) of plasma immunoreactive (IR) proopiomelanocortin N-terminal (NT) and IR-ACTH were studied in nine normal subjects and two patients with Addison's disease. The RIA for human NT (hNT) used was specific for NT except for partial cross-reactivity with gamma 2MSH. In normal subjects, plasma IR-hNT and IR-ACTH had almost parallel circadian rhythms and were suppressed by dexamethasone. The mean plasma levels of IR-hNT and IR-ACTH at 0800 h were 140 +/- 23 (SD) and 23 +/- 5 pg/ml, respective

Top-Down Beta Enhances Bottom-Up Gamma.

Several recent studies have demonstrated that the bottom-up signaling of a visual stimulus is subserved by interareal gamma-band synchronization, whereas top-down influences are mediated by alpha-beta band synchronization. These processes may implement top-down control of stimulus processing if top-down and bottom-up mediating rhythms are coupled via cross-frequency interaction. To test this possibility, we investigated Granger-causal influences among awake macaque primary visual area V1, higher visual area V4, and parietal control area 7a during attentional task performance. Top-down 7a-to-V1

The Impact of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Functional Connectivity in Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder Evaluated by Directed Transfer Function and Indices Based on Graph Theory.

The objective of this work was to study the impact of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) on the EEG connectivity evaluated by indices based on graph theory, derived from Directed Transfer Function (DTF), in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or with bipolar disorder (BD). The results showed the importance of beta and gamma rhythms. The indices density, degree and clustering coefficient increased in MDD responders in beta and gamma bands after rTMS. Interestingly, the density and the degree changed in theta band in both groups of nonresponders (decreased in MDD nonre

Neuronal desynchronization as marker of an impaired brain network.

Synchronization is a central key feature of neural information processing and communication between different brain areas. Disturbance of oscillatory brain rhythms and decreased synchronization have been associated with different disorders including schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether synchronization (in relaxed conditions with no stimuli) between different brain areas within the delta, theta, alpha (alpha1, alpha2), beta (beta1, beta2), and gamma bands is altered in patients with a neurological disorder in order to generate significant cortical enhancements. Lucky Rhythms in Orbitofrontal Cortex Bias Gambling Decisions in Humans.

It is well established that emotions influence our decisions, yet the neural basis of this biasing effect is not well understood. Here we directly recorded local field potentials from the OrbitoFrontal Cortex (OFC) in five human subjects performing a financial decision-making task. We observed a striking increase in gamma-band (36-50 Hz) oscillatory activity that reflected subjects' decisions to make riskier choices. Additionally, these gamma rhythms were linked back to mismatched expectations or "luck" occurring in past trials. Specifically, when a subject expected to win but lost, the trial

Sex differences in cholinergic signaling affect functional outcomes for theta-gamma coordination in hippocampal subcircuits following experimental febrile status epilepticus.

OBJECTIVE: Sex determines cognitive outcome in animal models of early life seizure, where males exhibit impaired hippocampal-dependent learning and memory compared with females. The physiological underpinnings of this sex effect are unclear. Cholinergic signaling is essential for the generation of hippocampal oscillations, and supplementation of cholinergic precursors prior to status epilepticus in immature male rats prevents subsequent memory deficits. We hypothesized that there are sex differences in acetylcholine circuits and their response to experimental febrile status epilepticus (eFSE).

Swallowing-related neural oscillation: an intracranial EEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Swallowing is a unique movement due to the indispensable orchestration of voluntary and involuntary movements. The transition from voluntary to involuntary swallowing is executed within milliseconds. We hypothesized that the underlying neural mechanism of swallowing would be revealed by high-frequency cortical activities. METHODS: Eight epileptic participants fitted with intracranial electrodes over the orofacial cortex were asked to swallow a water bolus and cortical oscillatory changes, including the high γ band (75-150 Hz) and β band (13-30 Hz), were investigated at the time of

Disruption of gamma-delta relationship related to working memory deficits in first-episode psychosis.

Working memory (WM) deficits constitute a core symptom of schizophrenia. Inadequacy of WM maintenance in schizophrenia has been reported to reflect abnormalities in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance between pyramidal neurons and parvalbumin basket cells, which may explain alterations of the dynamics of gamma and delta oscillations. To address this issue, we assessed event-related gamma (35-45 Hz) and delta (0.5-4 Hz) oscillatory responses in a visual n-back WM task in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls (HC). Periodicity analyses of oscillations were computed

Boosting the LTP-like plasticity effect of intermittent theta-burst stimulation using gamma transcranial alternating current stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) consists in delivering electric current to the brain using an oscillatory pattern that may entrain the rhythmic activity of cortical neurons. When delivered at gamma frequency, tACS modulates motor performance and GABA-A-ergic interneuron activity. OBJECTIVE: Since interneuronal discharges play a crucial role in brain plasticity phenomena, here we co-stimulated the primary motor cortex (M1) in healthy subjects by means of tACS during intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), a transcranial magnetic stimulation paradigm known t

Neural communication through theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling in a bistable motion perception task.

Functional significance of the neural oscillations has been debated since long. In particular, oscillations have been suggested to play a major role in formation of communication channels between brain regions. It has been previously suggested that gamma coherence increases during communication between hemispheres when subjects perceive a horizontal motion in Stroboscopic Alternative Motion (SAM) stimulus. In addition, disruption of this coherence may change the horizontal perception of SAM. In this study, we investigated the changes of Cross-Frequency Coupling (CFC) in EEG signals from pariet

Clinical use of Electroencephalography in the Assessment of Acute Thermal Pain: A Narrative Review Based on Articles From 2009 to 2019.

Nowadays, no practical system has successfully been able to decode and predict pain in clinical settings. The inability of some patients to verbally express their pain creates the need for a tool that could objectively assess pain in these individuals. Neuroimaging techniques combined with machine learning are seen as possible candidates for the identification of pain biomarkers. This review aimed to address the potential use of electroencephalographic features as predictors of acute experimental pain. Twenty-six studies using only thermal stimulations were identified using a PubMed and Scopus

Frontotemporal bursting supports human working memory.

Cortical neural activity varies dynamically during memory periods, when relevant information is not present in the environment. But how those dynamics are related to a code defining working memory (WM) performance is not known. Recent data shows brief bursts of activity in the high gamma (70-140 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz) band within non-human primate lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) is associated with WM processing. However, WM may be related to activity within a network of frontal executive and posterior sensory areas involved in stimulus perception. Here we tested whether gamma and beta burstin

Neonatal exposure to an inflammatory cytokine, epidermal growth factor, results in the deficits of mismatch negativity in rats.

Perinatal exposure to epidermal growth factor (EGF) induces various cognitive and behavioral abnormalities after maturation in non-human animals, and is used for animal models of schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia often display a reduction of mismatch negativity (MMN), which is a stimulus-change specific event-related brain potential. Do the EGF model animals also exhibit the MMN reduction as schizophrenic patients do? This study addressed this question to verify the pathophysiological validity of this model. Neonatal rats received repeated administration of EGF or saline and were grow
