[Acute encephalitis: bilateral lesions of the basal ganglia].

OBJECTIVE: To refer two children with acute encephalitis and bilateral basal ganglia lesion and its neurological outcome. CLINICAL CASES: Two girls, one of 9 years and the other of 15 months of age were affected by acute encephalitis, bilateral basal ganglia lesion was found on MRI in both children. Abnormal movements (tremor, choreoatetosis) and dystonia were the main symptomatology. In the first girl a mild dystonic posture on her hand and minor bradykinesia was the only found after a 4 year follow up. The other child, after 17 months of the beginning of her disease, still has generalized d

Cerebrovascular changes in the basal ganglia with HIV dementia.

BACKGROUND: HIV dementia is a form of subcortical dementia. Clinical, radiologic, pathologic, and biochemical studies suggest a major contribution of basal ganglia dysfunction to the pathogenesis of this disorder. Many investigators have proposed a contribution of a disrupted blood-brain barrier (BBB) to the pathogenesis of HIV dementia. OBJECTIVE: To identify microvascular abnormalities in vivo in basal ganglia or white matter of persons with HIV dementia. METHODS: Time course of MRI postcontrast enhancement was determined in basal ganglia and white matter of HIV-infected persons without de

The role of the thalamus and basal ganglia in parkinsonian tremor.

The mechanism of parkinsonian tremor may involve a central oscillator, peripheral feedback to the central nervous system (CNS), or both. The thalamus or the globus pallidus is the most likely site for a central oscillator and would be predicted to generate thalamic tremor-related activity characterized, respectively, by calcium spike-associated bursts and by maximal tremor-related activity in the pallidal relay nucleus of thalamus. Thalamic spike trains demonstrate neither of these characteristics. However, cross-correlation, latency, and transfer function analysis indicate that sensory feedba

AIDS-related MR hyperintensity of the basal ganglia.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to describe the MR imaging appearance and clinical pathologic correlates of bilateral basal ganglia hyperintensity in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). METHODS: Medical records and laboratory data were reviewed retrospectively in nine cases of bilateral basal ganglia hyperintensity on long-repetition-time MR images. Opportunistic infections of the central nervous system were excluded by clinical and laboratory data. Postmortem neuropathologic examination was obtained in two cases. RESULTS: All patients presented acutely with new seizures or changes in mental st

Degenerative axonal swellings in the trigeminal ganglia of cattle.

We examined the acidophilic oval structures which were frequently encountered in the trigeminal ganglia of cattle that clinically showed trigeminal disturbance. Histopathologically, these structures were composed of numerous fine granules and were generally located near the neuronal cell bodies. They were demonstrated in silver preparations and, using neuron-specific enolase, tau and ubiquitin antibodies. Electron microscopy revealed an accumulation of large membranous vesicles thought to be derived from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum of axons, a few degenerative mitochondria and non-membran

Electron microscopic evidence for neurotoxicity in the basal ganglia.

The dopaminergic projection from the substantia nigra to the neostriatum is vulnerable to several neurotoxins including 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), amphetamine, and 5-hydroxydopamine. We have treated rats or mice with these agents and examined various regions of their brains with a combination of Fink-Heimer, immunohistochemical, serial-section electron microscopic, and three-dimensional reconstruction methods. In addition to degenerating or swollen axons, we found darkened glial processes and some damage to postsynaptic cells and dendrites. The particular effects obse

[Dynamic focusing of informational convergence in basal ganglia].

Data in the literature support two apparently contradictory hypotheses: that of parallel processing and that of informational convergence in the basal ganglia. We present electrophysiological data supporting one and the other. Thus, at the output of the basal ganglia, in the intact monkey, neurons of the pallidum respond almost exclusively and in small number to passive limb movement. The specificity of the responses supports the parallel processing hypothesis. However, when the monkey is rendered parkinsonian by the neurotoxin MPTP, the dopaminergic deficit discloses a strong convergence upon

Movement disorders in astrocytomas of the basal ganglia and the thalamus.

In a series of 225 patients with astrocytomas (grades I-IV) of the basal ganglia and the thalamus, 20 had a movement disorder. In all patients the histological diagnosis was verified by stereotactic biopsy. Tremor was observed in twelve patients, dystonia in eight, chorea in three, and chorea/ballismus and myoclonus in one. The tumour involved the thalamus in 16 patients. Corticospinal tract dysfunction was evident in 70% of the patients with movement disorders and in 73% of those without. Demographic, clinical, histological and neuroradiological data of the patients with a movement disorder w

Sympathetic ganglia in diabetes. An ultrastructural and stereologic study.

An ultrastructural and stereologic study was performed on sympathetic ganglia collected at surgery from eight diabetic patients, seven age-matched non-diabetics and six subjects with glucose intolerance. All patients underwent surgery because of arteriosclerosis obliterans. Volume density (Vv) and mean thickness (tau) of the satellite cell layer were found to be significantly higher in diabetics (P less than .001 and P less than .002, respectively) than in the other two groups, between which no difference was found. Vv and tau of the endothelial basal lamina were found to be increased in the d

Unilateral germinomas involving the basal ganglia and thalamus.

Clinical characteristics of six cases of germinoma involving a unilateral basal ganglion and thalamus are summarized. The incidence was estimated as 10% of all intracranial germinomas. The average age at the onset was 10.5 years. The sex incidence showed a male dominance. The clinical course was slowly progressive, and the average duration between onset and diagnosis was 2 years 5 months. Common symptoms and signs were hemiparesis in all cases, fever of unknown origin and eye symptoms in most, mental deterioration and psychiatric signs in three, and convulsions, pubertas praecox, and diabetes

Unusual case of spontaneous bilateral basal ganglia bleed.

Hypertension is the most prevalent determinant condition embarking on the development of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. Usually, the presentation is a unilateral hematoma. Spontaneous bilateral intracerebral hemorrhage is an outstandingly infrequent context, and not a lot of cases have been reported till date. Ensuing hypertension, trauma inflicted on the brain case is another common cause that out turn into the sequelae of bilateral intracerebral hemorrhage. Lately, a few cases of bilateral basal ganglia bleed have been revealed, as a repercussion of COVID-19 infection. Globally, <40 s

Characterizing language outcomes following childhood basal ganglia stroke.

The basal ganglia are important for movement and executive function, but its contribution to language is less understood. This study explored language outcomes associated with childhood basal ganglia stroke. A detailed language coding scheme, which examined expressive and receptive language, verbal fluency, narrative discourse, pragmatic/applied language, and academics, was developed from qualitative and quantitative data acquired from neuropsychological testing and reports. Overall intellectual functioning and verbal comprehension was in the average range. Twelve participants had psychologica

Neurodevelopment. Parasympathetic ganglia derive from Schwann cell precursors.

Neural crest cells migrate extensively and give rise to most of the peripheral nervous system, including sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric, and dorsal root ganglia. We studied how parasympathetic ganglia form close to visceral organs and what their precursors are. We find that many cranial nerve-associated crest cells coexpress the pan-autonomic determinant Paired-like homeodomain 2b (Phox2b) together with markers of Schwann cell precursors. Some give rise to Schwann cells after down-regulation of PHOX2b. Others form parasympathetic ganglia after being guided to the site of ganglion format

Mephedrone alters basal ganglia and limbic dynorphin systems.

Mephedrone (4-methymethcathinone) is a synthetic cathinone designer drug that disrupts central nervous system (CNS) dopamine (DA) signaling. Numerous central neuropeptide systems reciprocally interact with dopaminergic neurons to provide regulatory counterbalance, and are altered by aberrant DA activity associated with stimulant exposure. Endogenous opioid neuropeptides are highly concentrated within dopaminergic CNS regions and facilitate many rewarding and aversive properties associated with drug use. Dynorphin, an opioid neuropeptide and kappa receptor agonist, causes dysphoria and aversion
