Most studies on rabies virus pathogenesis in animal models have employed fixed rabies viruses, and the results of those employing street rabies viruses have been inconsistent. Therefore, to clarify the pathogenesis of street rabies virus (1088 strain) in mice, 106 focus forming units were inoculated into the right hindlimb of ddY mice (6 weeks, female). At 3 days postinoculation (DPI), mild inflammation was observed in the hindlimb muscle. At 5 DPI, ganglion cells in the right lumbosacral spinal dorsal root ganglia showed chromatolysis. Axonal degeneration and inflammatory cells increased with

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of nerve root compression on dorsal root ganglia.
METHODS: Following the method of Kawakami, 4/0 ribbon gut were applied around left L4-6 spinal nerve roots in 50 SD rats. Just 3 mm cranial to the dorsal root ganglia, the nerve roots were secured by two ligation node. The nerve roots of right side were as control. The L4-6 spinal cord was taken out 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks after surgery, respectively. The activity of fluoride resistant acid phosphatase (FRAP) was determined by the enzyme histochemistry (Gomori method) and the image analysis technique.

The changes found in the brain and spinal cord and vegetative ganglias in one observation of nerogenic orthostatic hypotension or Shy-Drager syndrome are described. The morphological picture corresponds to a variant of Shy-Drager syndrome with a wide involvement of the nervous system at its various levels. Its is concluded that a thorough examination of the nervous system (including the spinal cord and vegetative ganglia) should be done in all cases of Shy-Drager syndrome and clinically similar diseases accompanied by vegetative disorders, for instance in shaking palsy.

Certain biopharmaceutical products consistently affect dorsal root ganglia, trigeminal ganglia, and/or autonomic ganglia. Product classes targeting ganglia include antineoplastic chemotherapeutics, adeno-associated virus-based gene therapies, antisense oligonucleotides, and anti-nerve growth factor agents. This article outlines "points to consider" for sample collection, processing, evaluation, interpretation, and reporting of ganglion findings; these points are consistent with published best practices for peripheral nervous system evaluation in nonclinical toxicity studies. Ganglion findings

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the importance of the sympathetic nervous system in homeostasis and its putative role in various disease states, little is known regarding our ability to image the sympathetic chain and sympathetic chain ganglia, perhaps owing to their small size. In this retrospective study, we sought to evaluate the normal anatomy of the sympathetic chain ganglia and assess the detectability of the sympathetic chain and sympathetic chain ganglia on high-resolution 3D-CISS images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 29 patients who underwent 3D-CISS MR imaging of the th

Iron accumulation in the basal ganglia and spheroid formation are pathological hallmarks of Hallervorden-Spatz disease (HS). Since an overaccumulation of iron (iron thesaurosis) that exceeds the binding capacity of ferritin could cause oxidative damage, we studied the possible role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of HS. The basal ganglia and spinal cord from patients with HS were investigated at autopsy, using histochemistry for iron and immunohistochemistry for Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1), Mn superoxide dismutase (SOD2) and ferritin. SOD1-like immunoreactivity (IR), SOD2-IR and

This study defined the origins of extrinsic efferent and afferent innervation of the normal canine esophagus. When all the layers of the wall of the 3 esophageal regions (cervical, thoracic and abdominal) were injected with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), labeled nerve cells were found in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) and parasympathetic nucleus of X (PX) of the brainstem. Most labeled cells in the NA were located in the compact column (retrofacial nucleus) while labeled cells in the PX were located in separate rostral and caudal areas. There was no somatotopic organization in either the NA or PX. L

Individuals with spinal cord injuries above thoracic level 6 (T(6)) experience episodic bouts of life-threatening hypertension as part of a condition termed autonomic dysreflexia. The paroxysmal hypertension can be caused by a painful stimulus below the level of the injury. Targeted ablation of mesenteric projecting sympathetic neurons may reduce the severity of autonomic dysreflexia by reducing sympathetic activity. Therefore, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) conjugated to saporin (SAP; a ribosomal inactivating protein that binds to and inactivates ribosomes) was injected into the celiac ganglio

The authors report an autopsy case characterized by progressive lethargy and autonomic failure with a distinctive pattern of occurrence of Lewy bodies. Autonomic dysfunction such as sleep apnea, orthostatic hypotension, dysuria, and hypohidrosis predominated with lethargy, whereas parkinsonism was not apparent. Numerous Lewy bodies were widely evident microscopically in brainstem nuclei and the intermediolateral cell columns of the spinal cord, as well as in the sympathetic ganglia, but were rare or absent in the cerebral cortex and other supratentorial structures. Marked neuronal loss was see

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) signal via four distinct high affinity cell surface tyrosine kinase receptors, termed FGFR1-FGFR4 (FGFR-FGF-receptor). Recently, a new modulator of the FGF signaling pathway, the transmembrane protein 'similar expression to FGF genes' (Sef), has been identified in zebrafish and subsequently in mammals. Sef from mouse and human inhibits FGF mitogenic activity. In the present study, we analyzed the expression of Sef in distinct rat brain areas, in the spinal cord and in peripheral nerves and spinal ganglia using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Furthermore, we studied t

CONTEXT: During the 1999 New York City West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak, 4 patients with profound muscle weakness, attributed to Guillain-Barré syndrome, were autopsied. These cases were the first deaths caused by WNV, a flavivirus, to be reported in the United States. The patients' brains had signs of mild viral encephalitis; spinal cords were not examined. During the 2002 national epidemic, several patients in Mississippi had acute flaccid paralysis. Electrophysiologic studies localized the lesions to the anterior horn cells in the spinal gray matter. Four of 193 infected patients in Mississip

The innervation of the rat external auditory meatus has contributions from several nerves. Fluoro-gold, a retrograde neuronal tracer, was used to determine the relative contributions from neurons in cranial and spinal ganglia, and to distinguish any difference in the sensory and motor innervation between the outer cartilaginous and inner bony portions. The following ganglia were examined: the trigeminal, geniculate, glossopharyngeal, vagal, superior cervical, and dorsal root (C2-C4) ganglia. All selected ganglia demonstrated innervation of the external ear canal, particularly the trigeminal, g

The pelvic ganglia provide the majority of the autonomic nerve supply to reproductive organs, urinary bladder, and lower bowel. Of all autonomic ganglia, they are probably the least understood because in many species their anatomy is particularly complex. Furthermore, they are unusual autonomic ganglia in many ways, including their connections, structure, chemistry, and hormone sensitivity. This review will compare and contrast the normal structure and function of pelvic ganglia with other types of autonomic ganglia (sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric). Two aspects of plasticity in the

The pattern of innervation of the caudal thoracic and cranial lumbar vertebral column of the dog is described. Frozen sections stained with Schofield's silver impregnation method show that the dorsal longitudinal ligament is profusely innervated, while the anulus fibrosus contains a few nerves limited to its outermost layers; no nerves are present in the nucleus pulposus. Following injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the anulus fibrosus of the thoracolumbar intervertebral disc and subsequent removal and staining of dorsal root ganglia, the reaction product is found in ganglia as far

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was immunohistochemically investigated in the frog spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia after axotomy. In normal ganglia, moderate NPY-like immunoreactivity (NPY-IR) prevailed in large and medium cells. In the spinal cord, the NPY-IR was densest in the dorsal part of the lateral funiculus. Other fibers and neurons NPY-IR were observed in the dorsal and ventral terminal fields and mediolateral band. NPY-IR fibers were also found in the ventral horn and in the ventral and lateral funiculi. The sciatic nerve transection increased the NPY-IR in large and medium neurons of the i

Human anti-GM1 antibodies from patients with lower motor neuron disease or predominantly motor neuropathy recognize carbohydrate determinants shared by GM1 and related glycolipids and glycoproteins, but the identity of the antigens to which they bind in tissue is unknown. We examined the binding of anti-GM1 antibodies with differing fine specificities to spinal cord, isolated motor neurons, and dorsal root ganglia neurons in order to characterize the tissue antigens. All anti-GM1 antibodies tested bound to the surface of bovine spinal motor neurons and immunostained the gray matter of unfixed

After the finding that anti-prion antibodies stain sensory and sympathetic ganglia in variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), it was suggested that this localization supported the oral route of entry. However, prion accumulation subsequently also appeared in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in sporadic cases. This study aims at evaluating the extent of prion protein accumulation in the PNS in all clinicopathologic subgroups of the disorder, with the exception of the familial and sporadic forms of fatal insomnia. Patients included 2 vCJD cases, 2 Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS), 2 iat

Current advances in the management of the autonomic nervous system in various cardiovascular diseases, and in treatments for pain or sympathetic disturbances in the head, neck, or upper limbs, necessitate a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the cervicothoracic sympathetic trunk. Our objective was to enhance our understanding of the origin and distribution of communicating branches and visceral cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves in human fetuses. This was achieved through a comprehensive topographic systematization of the branching patterns observed in the cervical and upper thoracic gan
