Effects of garlic consumption on physiological variables and performance during exercise in hypoxia.

Exposure to hypoxia results in vasoconstriction of the pulmonary vasculature (HPV) leading to pulmonary hypertension (HPH) and reductions in blood oxygen saturation and exercise performance. Alleviation of HPV and HPH via vasodilators has been shown to improve blood oxygen saturation and exercise performance in hypoxia. Garlic has been shown to reduce HPV and HPH in rats and has been suggested to have ergogenic effects in hypoxic exercise. We compared the effects of 7 days of supplementation with garlic and placebo on peripheral blood pressures, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, oxygen cons

Inhibition of baboon platelet aggregation in vitro and in vivo by the garlic derivative, ajoene.

BACKGROUND: The infusion of pig growth factor-mobilized peripheral blood leukocytes (containing 1 to 2% progenitor cells) (pPBPC) into baboons is associated with a thrombotic microangiopathy, which results from a direct effect of these pig cells on platelet aggregation. Ajoene is a synthetic derivative of garlic that inhibits aggregation of human platelets induced by all known agents. To assess its potential use in models of xenotransplantation, this agent was tested for its effect on baboon platelet aggregation in vitro and in vivo. IN VITRO STUDIES: Baboon platelet aggregation assays, using

Garlic-derived bioactive components in neuropathic pain: molecular mechanisms and therapeutic promise.

Neuropathic pain is a chronic condition associated with maladaptive changes in nociceptive pathways, driven by oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, neuroinflammation, ion channel dysfunction, and apoptotic dysregulation. Current pharmacological therapies often provide limited relief but with adverse effects highlighting the need for more safer therapeutic approaches. Garlic (Allium sativum) and its bioactive organosulfur compounds including allicin, S-allyl cysteine, diallyl disulfide, diallyl trisulfide have gained increasing attention for their neuroprotective potential. Garlic, Onion, and Cinnamon Essential Oil Anti-biofilms' Effect against Listeria monocytogenes.

Biofilms represent a serious problem for food industries due to their persistence in processing surfaces, from which they can cause food spoilage or, even worse, lead to foodborne diseases. Microorganisms immersed in biofilms are more resistant to biocides. The search for natural effective alternatives for the prevention and the control of biofilms has increased lately. The aim of this research was to test the antibacterial and the anti-biofilm activities of cinnamon, onion, and garlic essential oils against Listeria monocytogenes. The methodology highlighted first the effect of these essentia

Hepatoprotective effects of garlic against ethanol-induced liver injury: A mini-review.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a progressively aggravated liver disease with a diverse spectrum from steatosis to hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Epidemiological studies reveal that alcohol is one of the major causes of advanced liver disease in Europe, United States, and China. Despite the considerable harm, progression in ALD research is slow and the current therapies for ALD have less efficient. Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as a flavoring agent and also a folk medicine since ancient time. Along with the prosperity in the use of herbal medicines for the treatment of human dise

Discovery of Potato Rot Nematode, Ditylenchus destructor, Infesting Garlic in Ontario, Canada.

Potato rot nematode, Ditylenchus destructor Thorne, 1945, is a serious nematode pest in a number of root and tube crops, primarily in potatoes, and is an internationally quarantined pest (2). In garlic, it was only reported in Japan (3). In 2011, a survey was conducted for the stem and bulb nematode, Ditylenchus dipsaci (Kühn) Filipjev in Ontario, Canada. PCR analysis revealed that a population of Ditylenchus from one garlic (Allium sativum) bulb sample in a 0.81-ha field (2-acre) in the Ottawa area had a significantly longer ITS1 (approximately 100 bp) than that of D. dipsaci. Subsequent morp

Potent antifungal activity of garlic (allium sativum) against experimental murine dissemenated cryptococcosis.

The adequate management of cryptococcosis is difficult with the available armamentarium of synthetic antifungals. We made an effort to evaluate fresh extracts of garlic ( Allium sativum L.) to assess potential therapeutic use of this herb as an anticryptococcal agent. The in vitro antifungal activity in broth showed greatest activity in the aqueous extract (MIC 125-250 µg/ml; MFC 250 to = 500 µg/ml) compared to the alcoholic, crude or commercial extracts. Treatment of Balb/c mice with garlic extracts in mice (orally) showed that alcoholic extracts (5 mg/kg, q.i.d.) provided 100% protection of

Mechanism of Action and Interaction of Garlic Extract and Established Therapeutics in Prostate Cancer.

A detailed characterization of the mechanism of action of garlic extract (GE) on prostate cancer (PCa) cells is essential to ensure its safe use as a complementary therapy, particularly when combined with established treatments. A case report highlighted the potential benefits of GE in PCa management. A patient diagnosed with PCa, presenting an initial prostate-specific antigen (PSA) of 11.8 ng/mL, maintained PSA levels between 3.5 and 6 ng/mL for over 14 years with daily GE intake. To study GE's anti-proliferative effects and interactions with established therapeutics, healthy prostate epithe

Preclinical Evaluation of the Anticoagulant Effect of an Aqueous Extract of Snow Mountain Garlic.

Background/Objectives: In the genus Allium, it has been shown that some organosulfate compounds of common garlic and onion have an antiplatelet effect. Still, little is known about the anticoagulant activity of the species, Allium ampeloprasum L., specifically Snow mountain garlic; due to its growth site at 6000 m above sea level at temperatures of -10 °C, it could contain different organosulfate compounds. Methods: This study evaluated the anticoagulant effect of a lyophilized aqueous extract of S. mountain garlic in vivo, toxicity in male Wistar rats for 90 days, and the organosulfate compou

The Therapeutic Potential of Garlic-Derived Organic Polysulfides for Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury refers to the exacerbation of tissue or organ damage upon the restoration of blood flow after an ischemic event. Despite its widespread clinical occurrence, therapeutic interventions for I/R injury remain limited in efficacy, presenting a significant challenge in modern medicine. Garlic, traditionally consumed as a food, has gained considerable attention for its medicinal properties. Numerous animal studies have shown that garlic-derived organic polysulfides significantly improve nerve function scores post-I/R, reduce infarct size, mitigate inflammatory respon

Garlic constituents for cancer prevention and therapy: From phytochemistry to novel formulations.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the oldest plants cultivated for its dietary and medicinal values. This incredible plant is endowed with various pharmacological attributes, such as antimicrobial, antiarthritic, antithrombotic, antitumor, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic activities. Among the various beneficial pharmacological effects of garlic, the anticancer activity is presumably the most studied. The consumption of garlic provides strong protection against cancer risk. Taking into account the multi-targeted actions and absence of considerable toxicity, a few active metabolites of garlic

Lipophilic compounds in garlic decrease the toxicity of methylmercury by forming sulfur adducts.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) contains numerous sulfur compounds. We have previously found that reactive sulfur species such as glutathione persulfide, glutathione polysulfide, protein-bound persulfides, and hydrogen sulfide can bind to methylmercury to give bismethylmercury sulfide, which is less toxic than methylmercury. It was not clear, however, whether such reactive sulfur species are present in garlic. The aim of the study presented here was to determine whether garlic contains reactive sulfur species that can bind to methylmercury. We extracted garlic with organic solvents and then perform

Comparison of Physicochemical Characteristics of Garlic Produced from South Korea and China.

Garlic is widely cultivated and frequently used as a spice in South Korea, due to its characteristic flavor. It is rich in sulfur-containing compounds (for example, allicin) and nonsulfur elements (for example, phosphorus and potassium). During the last few years, the cultivation area of garlic in South Korea has gradually decreased, one of the reasons being the increase in low-priced imported garlic from China. Several studies have reported the discrimination of foods originating from different geographical areas by analyzing their physicochemical properties using various statistical methods.

Deodorization of Garlic Breath by Foods, and the Role of Polyphenol Oxidase and Phenolic Compounds.

Garlic causes a strong garlic breath that may persist for almost a day. Therefore, it is important to study deodorization techniques for garlic breath. The volatiles responsible for garlic breath include diallyl disulfide, allyl mercaptan, allyl methyl disulfide, and allyl methyl sulfide. After eating garlic, water (control), raw, juiced or heated apple, raw or heated lettuce, raw or juiced mint leaves, or green tea were consumed immediately. The levels of the garlic volatiles on the breath were analyzed from 1 to 60 min by selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Garlic was also bl

Immunomodulatory and antiparasitic effects of garlic extract on Eimeria vermiformis-infected mice.

We investigated the immunomodulatory and parasiticidal effects of garlic extract on coccidiosis caused by Eimeria vermiformis infection in male ICR mice. One group received garlic extract daily until the end of the experiment by the oral route from 10 days prior to oral infection with 300 sporulated E. vermiformis oocysts (infected-garlic(+)). The other group served as a control positive with E. vermiformis infection alone (infected-garlic(-)). In the infected-garlic(+) group, garlic extract treatment induced a significant reduction in fecal oocyst output when compared with the infected-garlic

In vitro effectiveness of garlic (Allium sativum) extract on scolices of hydatid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is still the main treatment for hydatid disease. Recurrence of the infection is one of the end points of surgery in treating the hydatid cyst which results from the dissemination of protoscolices-rich fluid. Installation of a scolicidal agent into the cyst is the most commonly employed measure to prevent recurrence. Many scolicidal agents have been used for inactivation of the cyst's content, but most of them are not safe due to their undesired side effects. In the present study, the scolicidal effect of methanolic extract of Allium sativum is investigated. METHODS: Protos

Chemoprevention of rat prostate carcinogenesis by diallyl disulfide, an organosulfur compound of garlic.

Diallyl disulfide (DADS), an important component of garlic (Allium sativam) has been demonstrated to exert a potential chemopreventive activity against human cancers. DADS inhibits proliferation of both androgen dependent and independent prostate cancer cells in vitro. However there is no report available on the role of DADS on prostate cancer initiation in in vivo model. So the present chemoprevention study was conducted to evaluate the activity of diallyl disulfide as an anticancer agent in prostate carcinogenesis of male Sprague-Dawley rats.
