The prevalence of Campylobacter pylori gastritis: a study of symptomatic nonulcer dyspepsia and bile gastritis.

We assessed the prevalence of Campylobacter pylori in various forms of endoscopic gastritis, including ulcer and nonulcer dyspepsia and bile gastritis and correlated it with histological evidence of inflammation. Multiple biopsy specimens were taken from 120 patients, including four normal controls, who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for evaluation of upper abdominal pain and discomfort, nausea, bilious vomiting, weight loss, and anemia. The patients included 58 men and 62 women, with a mean age of 53 years. Of these, 16 patients had gastric ulcers, 19 had duodenal ulcers, 26 had r

Local immunoglobulin production is different in gastritis associated with dermatitis herpetiformis and simple gastritis.

The degree of inflammation and atrophy in gastric body mucosal specimens (n = 38) from 28 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) was graded histologically. Immunoglobulin (Ig) producing cells were enumerated by paired immunofluorescence staining in a 500 microns wide section area from the muscularis mucosae to the lumen (mucosal 'tissue unit'). The number of immunocytes of the three main classes (IgA, IgM, and IgG) was significantly raised with increasing degree of gastritis. All three classes were increased in specimens showing atrophy compared with those without atrophy. IgA cells predo

Ethnic difference of Helicobacter pylori gastritis: Korean and Japanese gastritis is characterized by male- and antrum-predominant acute foveolitis in comparison with American gastritis.

AIM: To investigate the clinicopathological factors underlying the ethnic differences of Helicobacter pylori gastritis and cancer. METHODS: We analyzed clinicopathological parameters of gastric biopsies having H pylori infection that were randomly selected from different ethnic populations including 147 Americans, 149 Japanese, and 181 Koreans. RESULTS: Males were predominant in Japanese and Korean populations (77.9 and 67.4% respectively) in comparison with Americans (48.3%) (P<0.001). H pylori gastritis in Koreans and Japanese was characterized by the predominant antral involvement. In the

Cancer precursor lesions in intact stomach Helicobacter pylori gastritis and in resected stomach gastritis.

Hemigastrectomy for benign disease and Helicobacter pylori infection are risk conditions for the development of gastric cancer. Aim of the study was to compare gastric histology and precursor lesions of malignancy in these two conditions. The hemigastrectomy group included 351 consecutively endoscoped subjects operated for gastroduodenal benign disease. Six to ten biopsy specimens were routinely taken from the residual gastric mucosa. The intact stomach group included 2097 consecutively endoscoped symptomatic subjects, who did not receive eradication therapy against H. pylori. The histological

Helicobacter heilmannii gastritis: association with acid peptic diseases and comparison with Helicobacter pylori gastritis.

We analyzed 2 antral and 1 corpus full-thickness random endoscopic gastric mucosal samples obtained from 946 patients with duodenal ulcers (6077 biopsies) and from 281 patients with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-associated gastric ulcers (1794 biopsies). We stained tissue sections with hematoxylin and eosin and Warthin-Starry silver stain and immunostained them with polyclonal antibodies against Helicobacter pylori. Hematoxylin- and eosin-stained sections from 6 patients with Helicobacter heilmannii (18 biopsies) and 23 randomly selected patients with H. pylori (68 biopsies) were evaluat

Helicobacter pylori Gastritis as an Initial Presentation of Evolving Autoimmune Gastritis: A Report of Two Cases.

We herein report two cases of evolving autoimmune gastritis (AIG) that were initially diagnosed as active Helicobacter pylori gastritis. Both presented with swollen gastric areas and erythema in the context of a current H. pylori infection. One patient progressed to overt AIG after H. pylori eradication therapy, while the other progressed after the spontaneous disappearance of H. pylori infection. At the time of the AIG diagnosis, the antral mucosa showed atrophic regression, while the corpus mucosa showed severe atrophy. Therefore, when swollen gastric areas with erythema are observed during

Comparative study of gastric microbiota between patients with autoimmune gastritis and those with atrophic gastritis.

Fundamental treatments for autoimmune gastritis (AIG) have not yet been established; thus, analyzing AIG pathogenesis in detail to obtain useful information for prognosis prediction and treatment is crucial. This study explored bacteria involved in AIG pathogenesis by focusing on the gastric microbiota composition. Gastric biopsy tissues were collected endoscopically from the gastric corpus and antrum of patients with AIG and chronic gastritis. Total DNA was extracted from gastric biopsy specimens and used for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis. Principal coordinate analysis of diversi

Autoimmune Gastritis with a Long-term Course of Type B Gastritis: A Report of Two Cases.

Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) typically exhibits the characteristics of type A gastritis and has been classified as a separate disease from type B gastritis that corresponds to Helicobacter pylori gastritis. However, many reports have suggested the involvement of H. pylori infection in the pathogenesis of AIG. In our two cases, the patients' previous gastritis exhibited a clear pattern in which H. pylori gastritis had progressed over many years, but ultimately transitioned to AIG with its spontaneous disappearance. These findings suggest that some cases of AIG might originate from long-standing H

Helicobacter mustelae-associated gastritis in ferrets. An animal model of Helicobacter pylori gastritis in humans.

Gastric Helicobacter mustelae was present in 100% of 11 adult female ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). The high immunoglobulin G antibody levels to H. mustelae in all ferrets showed a significant immune response to the organism. Urease mapping of the ferret stomach indicated that the bacteria heavily colonized the proximal duodenum and antrum and, to a lesser extent, the corpus. The histological gastritis observed coincided with presence of H. mustelae. Superficial gastritis was noted in the oxyntic gastric mucosa, whereas in the distal antrum the chronic inflammatory response occupied the full

Is chronic gastritis a reversible process? Follow-up study of gastritis by step-wise biopsy.

In 36 patients step-wise biopsies of gastric mucosa were performed in 1971 and in 1974/75. A comparison of the histological changes revealed identical findings in 15, progression of superficial gastritis in 9 and regression of superficial gastritis in 7. In 5 patients regression of chronic atrophic gastritis was seen. In one patient an essentially normal mucosa was found in all biopsy specimens, in other patients parietal cells reappeared without any specific therapy.

[Identification of Nodular Gastritis among Patients Diagnosed with Lymphofollicular Gastritis on a Gastric Biopsied Specimen].

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Nodular gastritis (NG) is a well-known endoscopic finding observed in patients with a Helicobacter pylori infection, which may lead to invasive gastric cancer. Lymphofollicular gastritis consists of lymphoid follicles or lymphoid cell aggregates, and is common in children. The aim of this study was to identify patients with NG from those in whom gastric biopsied specimens showed lymphoid follicles and lymphoid cell aggregates. METHODS: Subjects, whose gastric biopsy specimens showed lymphoid follicles or lymphoid cell aggregates, were included in this study. The inclusion cri

Immunological mechanisms of autoimmune gastritis.

Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is a chronic disease characterized by specific immune damage to the gastric mucosa. Previous studies have mostly focused on the single immune pathway mainly mediated by T cells, but the synergistic role of humoral immunity in disease progression cannot be ignored. This article systematically reviews the immunological mechanism of AIG, and analyzes the inflammatory cascade immune mechanism centered on the self-attack of gastric parietal cells mediated by CD4+ T, with the pro-inflammatory roles of Th1/Th17 cells and defective suppressive function of Tregs as a suppleme

Collagenous gastritis: Still a mystery.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic colitis is a well-defined entity comprising two histopathological subtypes: lymphocytic colitis and collagenous colitis, which may represent different stages of the same disease. Upper gastrointestinal involvement by a process sharing histological features with microscopic colitis appears to be much more uncommon, and its pathogenesis, clinical significance, and management remain poorly characterised in the literature, as it may be easily overlooked or mistaken for other entities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a series of patients with collagenous g

Rat Experimental Autoimmune Gastritis Model.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is an autoimmune disease of the stomach characterized by the destruction of the oxyntic mucosa, which stops producing acid and becomes both functionally and morphologically atrophic. The pathogenic mechanisms behind the disease are still poorly understood. There is no early diagnosis and specific AIG therapy. To elucidate the pathogenesis of AIG, to search for early diagnostic markers, as well as to test new therapeutic approaches, an adequate and easily reproducible experimental model for autoimmune gastritis (EAG) is needed. Existing EAG models have som

Urease, Gastric Bacteria and Gastritis.

Urease is an enzyme produced by diverse bacterial species including normal flora, non pathogens, and pathogens such as Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae Helicobacter spp and Helicobacter pylori. Urease is central in Helicobacter pylori metabolism and virulence, important for colonization in the gastric mucosa. Urease catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia and carbamate. This ammonia product can be examined by Urease biopsy test and Urea breath test such as 14C-Urea Breath Test or 13C-Urea Breath Test.Previousl
