Wei Chang An pill regulates gastrointestinal motility in a bidirectional manner.

CONTEXT: Wei Chang An (WCA) is a commercial prescription developed for the coordination of gastrointestinal movement. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of WCA in the regulation of diarrhoea and constipation in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The diarrhoea and constipation models were prepared by gavage of Folium senna and diphenoxylate hydrochloride. Rats were randomized equally (n = 6) into the normal group given saline daily, the positive group given Pinaverium Bromide (13.5 mg/kg) or Sennoside A (0.1 mg/kg) and three WCA-treated groups (22, 44, and 88 mg/kg) by gavage daily for 7 consecutive

Colonic motility in patients with type 1 diabetes and gastrointestinal symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The electromagnetic 3D-Transit system allows assessment of regional transit times and motility patterns throughout the GI tract. We aimed to compare GI transit times and detailed motility patterns of the colon in patients with DM and GI symptoms to those of healthy controls (HC). We further aimed to determine whether any abnormalities in motility were reversible by cholinergic stimulation. METHODS: We compared 18 patients with DM with 20 HC by means of the 3D-Transit system. Patients were studied be

Understanding the Biology of Human Interstitial Cells of Cajal in Gastrointestinal Motility.

Millions of patients worldwide suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders such as gastroparesis. These disorders typically include debilitating symptoms, such as chronic nausea and vomiting. As no cures are currently available, clinical care is limited to symptom management, while the underlying causes of impaired GI motility remain unaddressed. The efficient movement of contents through the GI tract is facilitated by peristalsis. These rhythmic slow waves of GI muscle contraction are mediated by several cell types, including smooth muscle cells, enteric neurons, telocytes, and speci

Application of Pyridostigmine in Pediatric Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders are common in children. Treatment is challenging with limited medical and surgical options. Pyridostigmine, an acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor, increases acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction promoting intestinal contractions. Little is known about the role and dosing of pyridostigmine in pediatric GI motility disorders. METHODS: We present a case series of children with GI dysmotility managed with oral pyridostigmine. Patients' diagnoses include chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, gastroparesis with delayed small bowel transit, ch

Video Imaging and Spatiotemporal Maps to Analyze Gastrointestinal Motility in Mice.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) plays an important role in regulating gastrointestinal (GI) motility and can function independently of the central nervous system. Changes in ENS function are a major cause of GI symptoms and disease and may contribute to GI symptoms reported in neuropsychiatric disorders including autism. It is well established that isolated colon segments generate spontaneous, rhythmic contractions known as Colonic Migrating Motor Complexes (CMMCs). A procedure to analyze the enteric neural regulation of CMMCs in ex vivo preparations of mouse colon is described. The colon is

Gastrointestinal motility disorders in patients with anorexia nervosa - a review of the literature.

Anorexia nervosa is a disease carrying havoc on many levels of the body functioning. The presence of numerous somatic complications as a consequence of starvation is an important part of the clinical picture of this disease. Symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract are one of the most common complaints reported by patients, especially in the initial period of realimentation. Most common symptoms are associated with gastrointestinal motility disorders. The available data show that as many as half of patients suffering from anorexia nervosa manifest significant gastrointestinal motility disorders

Use of Clostridium botulinum toxin in gastrointestinal motility disorders in children.

More than a century has elapsed since the identification of Clostridia neurotoxins as the cause of paralytic diseases. Clostridium botulinum is a heterogeneous group of Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacteria that produce a potent neurotoxin. Eight different Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins have been described (A-H) and 5 of those cause disease in humans. These toxins cause paralysis by blocking the presynaptic release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. Advantage can be taken of this blockade to alleviate muscle spams due to excessive neural activity

[Neuropathy in the gut. Gastrointestinal motility disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus].

The extent and severity of motility disorders remains heterogeneous in the different parts of the gut, and in most cases failures in gut motility do not correspond with the severity of the symptoms. If diarrhea or fecal incontinence is the leading symptom, or the blood glucose level varies frequently and considerably despite the treatment efforts, the motility of the stomach and bowels is seriously disturbed. The clinical aspects, detailed pathogenesis, diagnostic approach and treatment modalities of gastrointestinal motility disorders in diabetes mellitus are reviewed to help and improve the

The effects of medetomidine and xylazine on gastrointestinal motility and gastrin release in the dog.

The effect of medetomidine, a potent and highly selective alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist, on the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, mid-jejunum and ileum was investigated in ten dogs. Its effect on the release of gastrin was also determined. Administration of medetomidine intramuscularly (i.m.) at a dose of 40 microg/kg inhibited the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, mid-jejunum and ileum significantly, in comparison to administration of xylazine intramuscularly at a dose of 2.0 mg/kg. The release of gastrin was also significantly decreased in dogs receiving medetomidine. It was fo
