Objective: To evaluate the effects of gender-affirming surgery (GAS) on quality of life and gender dysphoria (GD) among individuals in the United States. Data Sources: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, APA PsycINFO, APA, CINAHL Combined, and LGBTQ+ Source from February 2017 to February 2023. Randomized controlled trials and case reports/case series that described GD, quality of life, and gender surgery in the context of the United States were included. Study Selection: Five independent reviewers analyzed the studies; conducted screening of titles, abstracts, and f

OBJECTIVE: To assess the needs of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) adults for gender-affirming face, neck, and voice procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
SETTING: Online, February to May 2022.
METHODS: Primary outcomes included utilization of otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists; gender dysphoria felt from the face, neck, and voice self-reported on a 0 to 10 numeric rating scale (0 = no dysphoria, 10 = unbearable); and desire for various gender-affirming face, neck, and voice procedures. We used ordinal logistic and linear regression to assess relationships between

Gender dysphoria (also known as "transsexualism") is characterized as a discrepancy between anatomical sex and gender identity. Research points towards neurobiological influences. Due to the sexually dimorphic characteristics of the human voice, voice gender perception provides a biologically relevant function, e.g. in the context of mating selection. There is evidence for a better recognition of voices of the opposite sex and a differentiation of the sexes in its underlying functional cerebral correlates, namely the prefrontal and middle temporal areas. This fMRI study investigated the neural

Parents play a central role in supporting children experiencing gender dysphoria and in navigating decisions regarding social and medical transition. Despite this, parental perspectives remain underrepresented within the academic literature. This systematic review synthesized research examining how parents understand and interpret experiences of gender dysphoria during childhood and adolescence. Searches were conducted across multiple databases. Twenty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria. The literature consisted predominantly of qualitative studies and showed variation in recruitment met

BACKGROUND: The adversities and inheritance patterns of left-handedness have been associated with gender-related distress. Such driving factors predispose individuals to multiple mental health outcomes, shifting attention to the role of ruminative thinking.
PURPOSE: The study seeks to examine the effects of handedness patterns on gender dysphoria and rumination among young adults, observing the intricate relationships among these variables and postulating a substantial influence of handedness on both gender-related distress and rumination in this population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional design

Gender identity is a topic of growing interest in mental health research. People with non-conforming gender identity are prone to suffer from stigmatization and bullying, and often present with psychiatric issues. Transgender denotes the broad spectrum of individuals who identify differently from their assigned gender. Some transgender people meet the requirements of the "gender dysphoria" (GD) diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition, text revision). When these individuals seek or undergo a social transition from male to female or female

OBJECTIVE: Body integrity dysphoria (BID) is an intense need/desire to live in a disabled body, particularly due to a limb amputation or paraplegia. The investigators observed that significantly more people affected by BID wish to change their gender compared with the average population. The aim of this study was to find out whether gender identity (ie, typical male or female behavior) was less pronounced in a group of participants with BID than in a parallel control group of non-BID participants. The central hypothesis was that individuals in the BID group have a weak identification with thei

Gender dysphoria in adolescence could be expected to be associated with delayed sexual development because of the distress related to the sexual characteristics of the body. However, identity challenges may also increase early and risk-taking sexual behaviours among adolescents with gender dysphoria. We studied sexual experiences among 101 adolescents, attending an adolescent gender identity service, desiring gender reassignment. Their experiences were compared to the sexual experiences of the same-aged population, evaluated in a large adolescent survey. A majority of adolescents with gender d

The Family Court of Australia has stepped back from a previously perceived need for involvement in the approval of stage 1 and stage 2 treatments, for children requiring gender transformation. At present those children and their families who are in agreement need not seek authorisation of the Family Court to undertake either Stage 1 (pubarche blockade with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonists) or Stage 2 treatment (cross-hormone therapy such as oestrogen for transgender males). Stage 1 treatment to suppress pubarche would nowadays be commenced at Tanner stage 2 which commences as early as

AIM: Although there has been an increase in the social acceptance of the gender dysphoria (GD) population, these individuals still suffer a high degree of emotional stress, which highlights the importance of knowing their mental illness diagnosis.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify the frequency of lifetime Axis I mental disorders in this population, using the MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane, EMBASE, and PsychINFO databases and manual searching, examining articles published after 1980. The search used the key words: ('transgender' OR 'gender identity disorder' OR 'gender

In Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), Gender dysphoria (GD) is defined as a marked incongruence between one's experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender. Clinical pictures of GD in children show marked diversity. Because of their limited ability to express themselves verbally, children with GD might not be able to describe their discomfort or distress about this incongruence. In contrast to GD in adulthood, GD in children could be alleviated in the natural course. Thus, the clinical diagnosis of GD in children should be made carefully. Distortio

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing clinical recognition that a significant proportion of patients with gender dysphoria have concurrent autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
AIM: The purpose of this review is to systematically appraise the current literature regarding the co-occurrence of gender dysphoria and ASD.
METHODS: A systematic literature search using Medline and PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase was conducted from 1966 to July 2015.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Fifty-eight articles were generated from the search. Nineteen of these publications met the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: The literature inve

INTRODUCTION: An increased risk of autistic traits in Klinefelter syndrome (KS) has been reported. In addition, some studies have shown an increased incidence of gender dysphoria (GD) and paraphilia in autism spectrum disorder.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of (i) paraphilic fantasies and behaviors; and (ii) GD symptomatology in KS.
METHODS AND MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: A sample of 46 KS individuals and 43 healthy male controls (HC) were evaluated. Subjects were studied by means of several psychometric tests, such as Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and Reading the Mind

PURPOSE: There is evolving evidence that children and adolescents with gender dysphoria have higher-than-expected rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet clinical data on ASD among youth with gender dysphoria remain limited, particularly in North America. This report aims to fill this gap.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patient chart data from 39 consecutive youth ages 8 to 20 years (mean age 15.8 years, natal male: n = 22, natal female: n = 17) presenting for evaluation at a multidisciplinary gender clinic in a large U.S. pediatric hospital from 2007 to 2011 to evaluate

In the West gender dysphoria is commonly attributed to a biological abnormality, parental influences favoring assumption of a gender opposite to the subject's anatomical sex, or a combination of these factors. In Southeast Asia (among Hindus and Buddhists), numerous cases of gender dysphoria occur. They generally receive less attention than they do in the West and evoke relatively little concern on the part of the persons affected and the members of their families. The condition is attribwted to residues of a previous life as a member of the opposite sex. Some persons with gender identity conf

Gender dysphoria (GD) is marked by an incongruence between a person's biological sex at birth, and their felt gender (or gender identity). There is continuing debate regarding the benefits and drawbacks of physiological treatment of GD in children, a pathway, beginning with endocrine treatment to suppress puberty. Currently, the main alternative to physiological treatment consists of the so-called "wait-and-see" approach, which often includes counseling or other psychotherapeutic treatment. In this paper, we argue in favor of a "third pathway" for the diagnosis and treatment of GD in youths. T

BACKGROUND: Sex-specific differences in brain connectivity were found in various neuroimaging studies, though little is known about sex steroid effects on insular functioning. Based on well-characterized sex differences in emotion regulation, interoception and higher-level cognition, gender-dysphoric individuals receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy represent an interesting cohort to investigate how sex hormones might influence insular connectivity and related brain functions.
METHODS: To analyze the potential effect of sex steroids on insular connectivity at rest, 11 transgender women,
