Influence of gender and sexual identity on adolescent skin health.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Studies have identified dermatologic conditions and relevant skin-related behaviors that distinctly or disproportionately impact sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults compared with their cisgender/heterosexual counterparts, but whether these observations apply to SGM adolescents remains unknown. We aimed to describe the nature and frequency of skin conditions in SGM youth relative to their cisgender/heterosexual peers and explore adolescents' attitudes toward their skin health and accessing dermatologic care. METHODS: SGM and cisgender/heterosexual youth aged 13-21 yea

Long-Term Follow-Up of Adults with Gender Identity Disorder.

The aim of this study was to re-examine individuals with gender identity disorder after as long a period of time as possible. To meet the inclusion criterion, the legal recognition of participants' gender change via a legal name change had to date back at least 10 years. The sample comprised 71 participants (35 MtF and 36 FtM). The follow-up period was 10-24 years with a mean of 13.8 years (SD = 2.78). Instruments included a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods: Clinical interviews were conducted with the participants, and they completed a follow-up questionnaire as well as seve

Apples to committee consensus: the challenge of gender identity classification.

The debate surrounding the inclusion of gender dysphoria/gender variant behavior (GD/GV) as a psychiatric diagnosis exposes many of the fundamental shortcomings and inconsistencies of our current diagnostic classification system. Proposals raised by the authors of this special issue, including basing diagnosis on cause rather than overt behavior, reclassifying GD/GV behavior as a physical rather than mental condition, and basing diagnosis on impairment or distress, offer some solutions but have limitations themselves given the available database. In contrast to most accepted psychiatric condit

Gender identity disorder: a literature review from a developmental perspective.

The present paper reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on children and adolescents with gender variant behaviors. The organizational framework underlying this review is one that presents gender behavior in children and adolescents as a continuum rather than as a dichotomy of normal versus abnormal categories. Seven domains are reviewed in relation to gender variant behavior in general, and to Gender Identity Disorder (GID) in particular: theories of normative gender development, phenomenology, prevalence, assessment, developmental trajectories, comorbidity and treatment.

Expressed emotion in mothers of boys with gender identity disorder.

The authors examined the construct of expressed emotion in mothers of 20 boys with gender identity disorder (GID), 20 clinical control boys with externalizing disorders (ECC), 20 community control boys (NCB), and 20 community control girls (NCG). The mean age of the children was 6.86 years (SD = 1.46, range = 4-8 years). The authors predicted that the mothers of boys with GID would demonstrate (a) higher percentages of expressed emotion, criticism, and emotional overinvolvement compared with normal controls; and (b) higher percentages of only emotional overinvolvement compared with mothers of

Gender identity disorder: a review of the past 10 years.

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinically relevant literature on gender identity disorder (GID) in children and adolescents over the past 10 years. METHOD: All literature referring to gender identity and children or adolescents from 1985 on was reviewed. RESULTS: Changes in the DSM-IV nomenclature include (1) adoption of the single diagnosis of GID to apply to children, adolescents, and adults; (2) changes in the format of the criteria; and (3) placement in the section "Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders." Rates of associated psychopathology in children with GID are comparable with those in chil

Group therapy with gender-identity patients--a four-year study.

Group psychotherapy has proven to be an ideal setting for treatment, observation, and evaluation of gender-dysphoric patients prior to, during, and after sex reassignment surgery. Forty-three percent of the patients seen in the Case Western Reserve University group-therapy program elected nonsurgical solutions. The types of changes and adaptations observed in the 28 group-therapy patients are divided into four categories and discussed.

Changes in patients with gender-identity problems after parental death.

The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

An anthropometric study of sexual orientation and gender identity in Thailand.

The biodevelopment of psychological sex differentiation is putatively reflected in several anthropometrics. We examined eight anthropometrics in 1404 Thai participants varying in sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression: heterosexual men and women, gay men, lesbian women, bisexual women, sao praphet song (transgender birth-assigned males), toms (transgender birth-assigned females), and dees (birth-assigned females attracted to toms). Exploratory factor analyses indicated the biomarkers should be analyzed independently. Using regressions, in birth-assigned males, less male-typica

Quality of life of men and women with gender identity disorder.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the self-reported perceived quality of life (QoL) in female to male (FTM) and male to female (MTF) transgenders and compare it with a general population sample, and to find possible determinants that likely contribute to their QoL. METHODS: Participants were 71 trandgenders participating in the communities of Isfahan and Fars provinces, Iran, including 30 MTF and 41 FTM, and 142 gender- and age-matched controls. Persian version of the Short Form 36-Item Questionnaire was used to evaluate self-reported QoL, which measures QoL across eight domai

Clinician judgment in the diagnosis of gender identity disorder in children.

Clinician judgment methodology was used to explore the influence of gender nonconformity and gender dysphoria on the diagnosis of children with Gender Identity Disorder (GID). A convenience sample of 73 licensed psychologists randomly received a vignette to diagnose. Vignettes varied across sex of child, gender conforming behavior, and gender dysphoria (including all possible permutations). Eight percent of respondents given a vignette involving a child who met purely behavioral criteria for GID diagnosed the child with GID. When additional information was provided, which in addition to gender

[Gender identity disorders as a symptom of psychosis, schizophrenia in particular].

In the Netherlands it has recently become possible for transsexual patients to receive hormonal treatment from the onset of puberty. Until the age of 16, pubertal development can be prevented with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists. From 16 years of age onwards, gender adjustment can be initiated by administration of hormones of the opposite sex. Surgical treatment can be offered once the patient reaches 18 years of age. Although such treatment will only be initiated with reticence and after a long phase of intense diagnostic screening, the question arises whether a clear di

[Assessment of the suppression of puberty in children with gender identity problems].

The objective of this article is to reflect on the opportunity and risk of the proposed treatments to address gender identity problems in that sector of the population. In most of the protocols for the care of minors with gender identity problems, the abolition of puberty is proposed as a method of choice. This technique consists in the administration of reversible agonists of GnRH to provoke a suppression of the hormonal expression of the minor and, thus, the development of the sexual characters of their gender. The opportunity or adequacy of the systematic use of reversible GnRH agonists may

Gender identity disorder in a girl with autism--a case report.

A girl with high functioning autism who developed transsexualism is described. The literature to date has, to the authors' knowledge, not documented any similar case. The diagnosis of a coexisting psychiatric disorder in transsexualism has implications for the evaluation, prognosis, and appropriate management of the patient. The question of a possible relationship between autism and transsexualism and whether there is a predisposition to gender dysphoria in autism, is discussed.
