Abusive interactions and burnout: Examining occupation, gender, and the mediating role of community.

Abstract Two studies examined the association of gender and occupational group (nursing versus non-nursing) with perceived risk of abuse (sexual harassment and verbal and physical abuse) as well as the relationship of perceived abuse risk with burnout and sense of community. Study 1, comprising of two settings (tertiary care hospital, N = 3,062; psychiatric hospital, N = 383), found gender and occupational group associated with perceived risk of abuse (women felt greater risk than men; nurses felt greater risk than non-nurses). It also found a gender/occupational group interaction. Study 2, co

Relationships of substance use to attitudes toward gender roles, family and cohabitation.

This study utilizes data from four nationally representative subsamples of white high school seniors to analyze the relationships of alcohol consumption, marijuana use, and other illicit drug use to attitudes toward gender roles, family, and cohabitation. These analyses provide evidence concerning two hypotheses: the Gender Roles Hypothesis and Deviance Hypothesis. As predicted by the Gender Roles Hypothesis, among males, traditional gender role attitudes were associated with greater alcohol consumption. Contrary to the predictions of the Gender Roles Hypothesis, for females, nontraditional ge

The role of gender, phrenology, discrimination and nervous prostration in Clara Barton's career.

Clara Barton was 39 years old before she became involved in Civil War humanitarian activities. Prior to that time, three factors shaped her personality and her future: phrenology gave her philosophical principles to live by, especially "Know Thyself"; sex discrimination on her first two jobs steeled her for living in a male dominated Victorian era; and psychohygienic therapy for her long term nervous prostration changed her behavioral approach to illness and to life. With these three influences in hand, Barton went on to gain world-wide adulation. During the Civil War, she was revered as the A

Defense mechanisms in clients and non-clients as mediated by gender and sex-role.

This study examined defense mechanism utilization patterns of psychotherapy clients vs. individuals without mental health history, by administering the Defense Mechanism Inventory to 104 subjects. Concurrently, the mediating influence of gender and sex-role on defense mechanism utilization was assessed. Results indicated that gender and sex-role were significant in mediating the use of Turning against Self defenses and Turning against Other defenses, respectively. More importantly, however, psychotherapy clients differed from non-clients in their increased use of Projection and their decreased

The GAB-A: Development and Validation of the Gender Stereotypes and Roles Adherence Battery for Adolescents.

Validated instruments assessing gender stereotype endorsement among adolescents are scarce and often overlook contemporary domains like digital privacy. To address this gap, this study developed and validated the Gender Stereotypes and Roles Adherence Battery for Adolescents (GAB-A) in a sample of 2955 Italian adolescents attending public secondary schools in Rome (56.4% male; mean age 14.3 years). The battery comprises three modules: the Gender Stereotyped Attitude Scale (GSAS), Gender Role Activities Scale (GRAS), and Gendered Traits Inventory (GTI). Psychometric analysis confirmed robust fa

The Intertwined Victimhood Narrative and the Challenge to Chinese Men's Gender Role Legitimacy.

Gender inequality is often framed in terms of women's disadvantage, whereas men's gender-role constraints are overlooked or discussed in opposition to gender equality. We introduce the Intertwined Victimhood Narrative (IVN), which frames men's and women's constraints as interconnected consequences of a shared gender-role system. Two experiments recruited Chinese men through Credamo and randomly assigned them to narrative conditions. Study 1 (N = 200) compared the IVN with a Women-Centric Victimhood Narrative (WCVN) to test whether it would increase men's recognition of constraints affecting th

Role of sex and gender in autoimmune thyroid diseases: mechanisms and knowledge gaps.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), mainly Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease, are the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders and display one of the strongest sex biases in autoimmunity, with a marked female predominance. This review examines how biological sex and gender-related determinants shape AITD susceptibility, expression, and clinical heterogeneity, and their relevance to personalized care. PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus were searched from inception to June 2026, with Web of Science used for forward citation tracking. Human studies, reviews and meta-analyses, and selecte

The role of gender in informant reports of cognitive decline in the United States and Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the influence of respondents' and informants' gender on informants' assessments of cognitive functioning in population studies in the United States and Mexico. METHODS: Using data from the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS-HCAP) (N = 3,025) in the United States and the Mexican Cognitive Aging Study (Mex-Cog) (N = 1071) in Mexico, we examined informant reports of cognitive decline with 17 questions from the Community Screening Instrument for Dementia (CSI-D). Ordinary least squares regression was used to

Characterization of Psychiatric Inpatients: The Role of Gender Differences in Clinical and Pharmacological Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Severe mental disorders that require hospitalization are disabling conditions that contribute to the burden of mental diseases. They pose increased clinical challenges and highlight the need to thoroughly explore variables emerging from daily clinical practice. In this study, we assessed to what extent gender differences may characterize a large population of psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2 Italian teaching medical centers, which included 2358 patients who were consecutively admitted to the psychiatric emergency units. We explored and cha

The Effects of Activating Gender-Related Social Roles on Financial Risk-Taking.

Previous studies observed differences between men and women in terms of their financial risk-taking. However, these differences may stem not only from the gender of the decision-maker but also from other factors, such as stereotypical gender social roles. Media content exposes both men and women to stereotypical portrayals of their gender, and this might temporarily activate thoughts related to their social roles. A question arises whether such activation might impact the way people make risky financial decisions. The present experimental study investigated whether temporarily activated gender

A Pilot Study on the Role of Experience and Patient Gender on MARCH Treatment Sequence.

INTRODUCTION: The brevity of training for soldiers and combat medics to learn how to provide treatment on the battlefield may restrict optimal performance for treating chest and airway injuries, particularly when treating female soldiers. The present study tested treatment performance on patient simulators by battlefield medic trainees to determine whether there is a need for more extensive training on chest and airway procedures on female soldiers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Battlefield medic trainees treated male and female patient simulators in counterbalanced order. The assessment considered

Role of Facial Index and Odontometric Parameters in the Establishment of Stature and Gender of Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Dental anthropology is an important aspect of bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. In forensic anthropological studies, identifying an unknown individual from a mangled and decomposing body is a challenging task. Cranial remains are the only critical clues available for personal identification. Age, sex, and stature are significant parameters in establishing the identity of an unrecognized individual. Stature is the natural height of the individual in an upright position. Stature can be estimated from various parts of the body such as long bones, short bones, and skull. Few st

Conflict-coparenting spillover: The role of actors' and partners' attachment insecurity and gender.

The current research applied a dyadic perspective to examine conflict-coparenting spillover by examining (a) whether actors' or partners' hostility during couples' conflict discussions predicted greater hostility in a subsequent play activity with their child and (b) whether these actor and partner effects were moderated by two factors that prior theory and research suggest may shape conflict-coparenting spillover: attachment insecurity and parent gender. Cohabiting or married couples were video recorded discussing their most serious conflict while their 4-5-year-old child was in a separate ro

How Should Decision-Sharing Roles Be Considered in Adolescent Gender Surgeries?

The nascent field of gender-affirming surgery (GAS) for binary and nonbinary transgender adolescents is growing rapidly, and the optimal use of shared decision making (SDM)-including who should be involved, to what extent, and for which parts of the decision-is still evolving. Participants include the adolescent (whose goals might center on aesthetics and functionality), the surgeon (who might focus more on minimizing complications), the referring clinician (whose participation is mandated by present standards of care), and the caregiver (whose participation is required for patients below the

Gender as a Risk Factor for Functional Movement Disorders: The Role of Sexual Abuse.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of functional movement disorders is 2 to 3 times higher in women than in men. Trauma and adverse life events are important risk factors for developing functional movement disorders. On a population level, rates of sexual abuse against women are higher when compared with the rates against men. OBJECTIVES: To determine gender differences in rates of sexual abuse in functional movement disorders compared with other neurologic disorders and evaluate if the gender prevalence is influenced by higher rates of sexual abuse against women. The Role of Gender in Preparedness and Response Behaviors towards Flood Risk in Serbia.

Adverse outcomes from 2014 flooding in Serbia indicated problematic response phase management accentuated by a gender imbalance. For this reason, we investigated the risk perceptions and preparedness of women and men regarding these types of events in Serbia. Face-to-face interviews, administered to 2500 participants, were conducted across 19 of 191 municipalities. In light of the current findings, men seemed to be more confident in their abilities to cope with flooding, perceiving greater individual and household preparedness. By contrast, women displayed a deeper understanding of these event

Perceptions of Psychological Abuse: The Role of Perpetrator Gender, Victim's Response, and Sexism.

It is commonly assumed that male abuse is more damaging than female abuse, just as it previously has been assumed that physical abuse is more harmful than psychological abuse. We sought to examine gender assumptions given that they may cause people to overlook the harm that men experience with a psychologically abusive partner. The current experiment compared perceptions of male and female perpetrators of psychological abuse, and examined whether gendered perceptions were affected by sexist beliefs or participants' own sex. The experiment also explored the effect of the victim's response to a

Childhood trauma and general cognitive ability: Roles of minimization/denial and gender.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of minimization and gender on the interaction between childhood trauma and general cognitive ability. The study included 345 students. The data were obtained via an information form, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and Raven's standard progressive matrices (RSPM). The mean CTQ total score and the mean sexual abuse, physical, and emotional neglect subscale scores of the male students were significantly higher than those of the female students (p<0.05).
