Assessing the HIV prevention needs of transgender men and non-binary people who have sex with men: an analysis of repeated, cross-sectional behavioural surveillance, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: The HIV-related needs of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people who have sex with men in Australia are under-researched, impeding the effective use and targeting of HIV and sexual health services. METHODS: We used behavioural surveillance data to compare transgender men, non-binary people, and cisgender men on a range of factors, including demographics, sexual health, and the use of HIV testing and prevention. All eligible participant responses from the Gay Community Periodic Surveys (repeated, community-based, cross-sectional surveys) in 2019-2023 were included. Multivariabl

Measures Assessing Barriers and Facilitators to Post-Sexual Violence Services: A Critical Review.

Sexual violence (SV) is a significant public health problem associated with poor health, social, and economic outcomes. Although services exist to support survivors of SV, many do not access these services. This critical review examines measures used to assess barriers and facilitators to post-SV services and whether these measures address the full breadth of concerns among SV survivors, particularly those who hold marginalized identities. Eligible studies had to be original and peer-reviewed, include a measure of barriers or facilitators to service-seeking, and focus on SV survivors. We revie

Delays in Sexual Health Care Among Patients Attending New York City Sexual Health Clinics During the COVID-19 Pandemic, March 2020 to February 2021.

BACKGROUND: Public health emergencies can lead to reduced or suspended services in sexual health clinics (SHCs), raising questions about optimal ways to maintain access to care. We examined changes in sexual behaviors, human immunodeficiency virus preexposure prophylaxis use, telehealth preference, and correlates of delayed sexual health care among patients attending New York City (NYC) publicly funded SHCs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Four hundred seventy patients from four SHCs (July to September 2021) completed a self-administered survey that collected data on access to sexual he

Gender minority stress in transgender people: a major role for social network.

BACKGROUND: Gender minority individuals, on average, experience higher rates of mental health problems. Mounting work suggests that gender minority stress (GMS) contributes to mental health outcomes in transgender/gender-nonconforming individuals. AIM: We assessed whether GMS decreased in transgender people after initiating gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), and we identified social predictors and hormonal associations for GMS at 2 time points. METHODS: GMS was surveyed through self-report questionnaires tapping into proximal and distal stressors and coping constructs following the min

Muscle dysmorphia among Brazilian gender-expansive individuals and transgender men: Factor structure and measurement invariance of the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI).

Muscle dysmorphia is a specifier of body dysmorphic disorder marked by a pathological need for muscularity and the obsession that one is either too small or not muscular enough. Most research on muscle dysmorphia has been done in cisgender men and there is a dearth of literature on the topic among gender-minoritized individuals. The present study aimed to determine whether the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI), one of the most used measures of muscle dysmorphia symptoms, exhibits good psychometric properties among Brazilian gender-expansive and transgender men. In the present study,

Assessing Tobacco Harm Perceptions Among Transgender and Nonbinary Adults: Results From a Community Informed State-Wide Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiologic data have documented elevated levels of smoking and vaping among transgender and nonbinary (trans) adults. Yet, knowledge about nicotine and tobacco harm perceptions are not well understood within this population. METHODS: Utilizing data from a community-informed study conducted among transgender adults in Washington state from March to April 2023, we explored gender differences in the distribution of tobacco harm perceptions (knowledge, addiction, and harm perceptions). Using logistic and multinomial regression models, we tested predictors and correlates of accura

LGBTQ+ College Students' Exposure to Discrimination and Relationships to Mental Health and Healthcare Utilization: Findings from a National Survey.

Compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers, LGBTQ+ emerging adults consistently experience poorer mental health outcomes and utilize health care at lower rates. Disparities during emerging adulthood set the trajectory for lifelong health risks. These disparities have been linked to experiences of discrimination, including both interpersonal discrimination from peers as well as from institutions and service providers. It is unknown how common these experiences are in a college setting. Using the 2024-2025 Healthy Minds Study-a large national dataset that includes 17,942 LGBTQ+ students-we e

Determinants of male healthcare utilization in Switzerland: does gender identity and migration background matter?

BACKGROUND: Men often exhibit lower rates of healthcare utilization. Particularly vulnerable groups-such as men belonging to gender minority groups and men with a migration background-may face additional barriers in accessing care. This study examined healthcare utilization patterns across diverse male gender subgroups in Switzerland, with attention to the role of migration status, while accounting for key sociodemographic factors. METHODS: We analyzed a subset of the Swiss Health Survey (SHS) 2022, a nationally representative dataset of the general Swiss population. Our sample included indiv

The Gender Non-affirmation from Sexual Partners Scale: Psychometric Evaluation and Correlates of a Brief Stigma Scale in a Sample Transgender and Gender Diverse Community Health Center Patients.

This study evaluated the psychometric performance and correlates of a 4-item GNSP scale among transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TGD) adults. Data were collected in 2019-2020 via an electronic, self-reported cross-sectional survey of 2192 TGD adults accessing two U.S. LGBTQ+ community health centers. Participants reporting sex within the past 6 months (60.7%, n = 1463) were asked the 4-item GNSP scale. Analyses were internal consistency reliability (α), confirmatory factor analysis, and a multivariable logistic regression model of GNSP scale correlates (adjusted odds ratios [AOR], 95%

Self-reported hepatitis B diagnoses and vaccination history in trans and non-binary communities in Germany, the TASG-study* 2022.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, little is known about hepatitis B (HepB) prevalence and vaccination coverage among transgender and non-binary people (TNBP), a WHO-defined viral hepatitis key population. Our study aimed to assess self-reported HepB diagnoses, self-reported positive vaccination history, and potential predictors for a positive vaccination history in a subset of participants for whom the German standing committee on vaccination recommend HepB vaccination. METHODS: We analysed data from a 2022 cross-sectional online survey of TNBP in Germany. We calculated percentages and prevalence ratio

Educational guidelines on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics biases in medical education.

A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in medical education requires addressing both explicit and implicit biases based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics and the intersectionality with other identities. Heterosexism and heteronormative attitudes contribute to health and healthcare disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning, intersex, asexual individuals. Student, trainee, and faculty competencies in medical education curricula regarding the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer o

Awareness, Attitudes, and Interest in Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis as Bacterial Prophylaxis Against Sexually Transmitted Infections-New York City Sexual Health Clinics, June to August 2023.

BACKGROUND: Increased incidence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis dictates the need for novel prevention strategies. One such strategy, doxycycline prescribed prophylactically, has proven to be effective at reducing transmission among men who have sex with men and transgender women. We assessed awareness, attitudes, and interest in doxycycline preexposure/postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPrEP/doxyPEP) among New York City sexual health clinic patients, including men who have sex with men, other cisgender men, women, transgender persons, and p

"Every Person Is Going to Have Different Needs and Different Expectations": Reproductive Health Care Experiences of LGBTQ+ Veterans Assigned Female at Birth Within the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Research outside of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) suggests that sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) people assigned female at birth face barriers to accessing needed reproductive health care and receive poorer-quality care in reproductive health settings such as OB/GYN offices and fertility clinics. Little is known about the experiences of LGBTQ+ veterans receiving reproductive health care within the VHA. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand LGBTQ+ VHA users' reproductive health care experiences and preferences using in-depth semistructured qualitative interviews. METHODS

Longitudinal Analysis of Substance Use as a Predictor PrEP Use and Adherence Among Young Transgender Women and Nonbinary Individuals.

Previous research on the influence of substance use on PrEP uptake and adherence among transgender women has either relied on cross-sectional analyses or on combined samples of cisgender men who have sex with men and a much smaller subsample of transgender women. To the best of our knowledge, no longitudinal study has examined the relationship of substance use and PrEP use/adherence among young transgender women and nonbinary people assigned male at birth (TNBY). We sought to understand whether substance use (i.e., binge drinking, marijuana use, and illicit drug use) predicts PrEP uptake and a

Diagnostic challenges in predominantly late-diagnosed gender-diverse autistic individuals: Age, delays, and perceived misdiagnoses.

Historically, diagnostic criteria for autism have been shaped by male-centric childhood presentations, leading to reduced diagnostic accuracy for non-male autistic individuals. We investigated disparities between gender-diverse and cisgender autistic individuals in the age at formal diagnosis, delays between initial suspicion and diagnosis, and the frequency of prior perceived misdiagnoses. We analyzed 2,722 participants predominately late-diagnosed with autism, including 402 gender-diverse individuals. The analysis, controlling for age at participation, revealed that cisgender females were di

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of HIV/sexually transmitted infections among transgender and gender-diverse individuals attending a gender-affirming clinic in Japan: A descriptive clinical-based study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals face elevated risks of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In Japan, limited access to comprehensive sex education and the legal sterilization requirement for gender change may contribute to gaps in prevention awareness. We examined HIV/STI prevalence and clinical characteristics among TGD individuals in clinical settings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 560 TGD individuals made their first visit to our clinic for gender-affirming care between January 2023 and December 2024. Among them, 275 (49%), all asymptomatic, underwent volun
