Placental transfer of antidepressant medications: implications for postnatal adaptation syndrome.

Seven to thirteen percent of women are either prescribed or taking (depending on the study) an antidepressant during pregnancy. Because antidepressants freely cross into the intrauterine environment, we aim to summarize the current findings on placental transfer of antidepressants. Although generally low risk, antidepressants have been associated with postnatal adaptation syndrome (PNAS). Specifically, we explore whether the antidepressants most closely associated with PNAS (paroxetine, fluoxetine, venlafaxine) cross the placenta to a greater extent than other antidepressants. We review resear

Biochemical Adaptation and Telomere Shortening in Javanese Macaques in Response to Social Isolation.

In this study, we examined changes in hormonal status, oxidative status, antioxidant defense, and peripheral blood leukocyte telomere length in male Javanese macaques (Macaca fascicularis) following transfer from group housing to individual cages as a model of social isolation. The study was performed in ten male Javanese macaques aged 11-17 years using a longitudinal design: the parameters were assessed in the same animals before transfer to individual cages and after 60 days of isolation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, cortisol, testo

Growing Older With a Physical Disability: A Special Application of the Successful Aging Paradigm.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, the average age of people living with early-acquired physical disabilities is increasing. This cohort is said to be aging with disability and represents a unique population among older adults. Given recent policy efforts designed to merge aging and disability services, it is critical that models of "successful aging" include and are relevant to this population. However, many current definitions of successful aging emphasize avoidance of disability and high levels of physical function as necessary to well-being. METHOD: In 9 focus groups, we examined perspecti

[Microcirculation impairment in periodontal tissues in patients with chronic generalized periodontitis combined with metabolic syndrome].

Using the method of laser Doppler flowmetry the study of microcirculation in periodontal tissues in patients with moderate chronic generalized periodontitis and metabolic syndrome was carried out. The analysis of microcirculation values proved not only the reduction of blood flow intensity but also the decreased vasoactivity of microvessels essential to maintain normal microcirculation in periodontal tissues, as it provides active modulation of tissue blood flow and its adaptation to local metabolic needs.

Clinical application of long-read nanopore sequencing in a preimplantation genetic testing pre-clinical workup to identify the junction for complex Xq chromosome rearrangement-related disease.

OBJECTIVE: Xq chromosome duplication with complex rearrangements is generally acknowledged to be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) and MECP2 duplication syndrome. For couples who required a PGT-M (pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic disease) for these disorders, junction-specific PCR is useful to directly detect pathogenic variants. Therefore, pre-clinical workup for PGT-M requires the identification of the junction of duplicated segments in PMD and MECP2 duplication syndrome, which is generally difficult. METHODS: In this repo

Mechanisms of Adaptive Immunity to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus.

The adaptive immune response is necessary for the development of protective immunity against infectious diseases. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), a genetically heterogeneous and rapidly evolving RNA virus, is the most burdensome pathogen of swine health and wellbeing worldwide. Viral infection induces antigen-specific immunity that ultimately clears the infection. However, the resulting immune memory, induced by virulent or attenuated vaccine viruses, is inconsistently protective against diverse viral strains. The immunological mechanisms by which primary and memor

The History of Farm Foxes Undermines the Animal Domestication Syndrome.

The Russian Farm-Fox Experiment is the best known experimental study in animal domestication. By subjecting a population of foxes to selection for tameness alone, Dimitry Belyaev generated foxes that possessed a suite of characteristics that mimicked those found across domesticated species. This 'domestication syndrome' has been a central focus of research into the biological pathways modified during domestication. Here, we chart the origins of Belyaev's foxes in eastern Canada and critically assess the appearance of domestication syndrome traits across animal domesticates. Our results suggest

Anaesthetic management of median arcuate ligament syndrome.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome, also known as celiac artery compression syndrome, is a rare and unusual clinical disorder. Its symptoms are non-specific, which complicates its diagnosis, and a multidisciplinary approach is required to treat the disorder. The ligament is circumferentially cleared by laparoscopy. Selective angiography and endovascular techniques may be used after laparoscopy. Vital organs and important vascular structures can be injured during the surgery. The combination of different procedures, as well as the high risk of damage, make this process a significant challenge for

Adaptive selection of quasispecies during in vivo passaging in chickens, mice, and ferrets results in host-specific strains for the H9N2 avian influenza virus.

Sporadic human infections of avian influenza virus (AIV) raise significant public health concerns. A critical factor limiting the transmission of AIVs is the shift in receptor-binding preference from Siaα2,3 to Siaα2,6. To reveal the adaptive selection dynamics during the host adaptation process of AIVs, this study generated a viral library with random mutations in the HA gene of the H9N2 strain. Upon passaging the viral library in chickens and mice, the predominantly selected variants exhibited a preference for Siaα2,3 receptors. Notably, the wild-type strain remained dominant in both inocula

[Gallstone duodenal obstruction or Bouveret's syndrome. Apropos of two cases].

Bouveret's syndrome is a rare form of Gallstone Ileus, characterized by its duodenal site after migration through a cholecysto-duodenal fistula in almost all cases. The two cases reported emphasize the interest of endoscopy in its early diagnosis. A therapeutic schema is proposed, based upon a systematic initial endoscopic extraction trial. The surgical treatment when needed is discussed in its modalities, and adapted to a reasonable evaluation of general and local conditions.

[Individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness].

Several different theories exist about the origin of kinetosis and the space adaptation syndrome, with individual sensitivities differing significantly. One explanation involves the hypothesis of a different otolith mass between the right and left statolith organ and especially a difference in the utricles. A difference in mass results in a different sensitivity to acceleration. For this reason we measured interindividual variances in saccular and utricular otolith mass. Since the anatomy of the vestibular organ in vertebrates is based as similar principles, we selected fish (salmon and trout)

Reovirus Infections in Broiler Chickens: A Narrative Review.

Infections caused by avian orthoreovirus represent an emerging problem with a major impact on the global poultry industry, especially in the intensive rearing of broilers. This article addresses, in a complex manner, the etiology of some clinical syndromes of interest in poultry farming: malabsorption syndrome and arthritis/tenosynovitis syndrome. Data are presented, starting from the development and physiology of the digestive tract in broiler chickens in the post-hatch period, epidemiological data, clinical signs, morphopathological changes in the intestine, and diagnostic methods in orthore

Difficulties adapting to Nail-Patella syndrome: A qualitative study of patients' perspectives.

Nail-Patella syndrome (NPS) is a genetic disorder generating physical malformations and, in approximately one in three cases, ocular and renal damage. The present research aimed to deeply understand patients' subjective experience with NPS, particularly the aspects of the syndrome that affect patients' adaptation and to propose interventions that can improve genetic and psychological counseling and help patients cope with their condition. Semi-structured interviews of nine people diagnosed with NPS were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results highlighted attempts to lo

Re-evaluating cytokine storm syndromes: dysregulated host defense or contextual immune adaptation?

Cytokine storm syndromes have become a much-invoked concept to describe severe immunopathology in infectious, inflammatory, and iatrogenic diseases, but the concept is poorly defined and often mechanistically imprecise. High levels of systemic cytokines have often been viewed as indicators of immune dysfunction, and based on this notion, therapeutic interventions focused on general cytokine inhibition are proposed. Nevertheless, a growing number of clinical and experimental data dispute the notion that hypercytokinemia is necessarily pathological. The present paper reconsiders cytokine storm s
