Increasing the naming speed of poor readers: representations formed across repetitions.

In three experiments we examined the effect of repetition practice on the acquisition, retention, and generalization of children's skill in rapidly naming visually presented words. Experiment 1 showed that naming times decrease rapidly with practice. Retention of this newly acquired skill in rapid naming was a function of the degree of learning during training. "Overlearning" was necessary to prevent forgetting of the skill. Experiment 2 indicated that the rate at which the naming gains were acquired, and the amount of forgetting, was unrelated to the specific orthographic to phonological corr

Effects of barbiturates and other sedative hypnotics in pigeons trained to discriminate phencyclidine from saline.

Pigeons were trained to peck the center key (lighted white) of three response keys to turn off the center keylight and to light one of the side keys with a red keylight and the other side key with a green keylight. Five responses (fixed-ratio component) on either side key relighted the center key. Food was delivered following 10 fixed-ratio components on the red key if 1.5 mg/kg phencyclidine had been given before the session. The position of the red and green keylights on the side keys varied randomly each time they were lighted by a peck on the center key. Subsequently, increasing doses of p

Neural dynamics of stimulus-response representations during inhibitory control.

The investigation of action control processes is one major field in cognitive neuroscience and several theoretical frameworks have been proposed. One established framework is the "Theory of Event Coding" (TEC). However, only rarely, this framework has been used in the context of response inhibition and how stimulus-response association or binding processes modulate response inhibition performance. Particularly the neural dynamics of stimulus-response representations during inhibitory control are elusive. To address this, we examined n = 40 healthy controls and combined temporal EEG signal deco

Fear Generalization in Adolescent Anxiety Disorders: A MEG Study.

BACKGROUND: Adult patients with anxiety disorders (ADs) as well as healthy children and adolescents generalize learned fear responses to a larger degree than healthy adults. Although such overgeneralization of fear is central to theories of AD, little research has examined the respective mechanisms in pediatric populations. Therefore, we investigated behavioral and neural processes associated with fear generalization in adolescent patients with AD. METHODS: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was recorded while 30 adolescent patients with AD and matched healthy controls (HCs) performed a prevalidate

Further characterization of the three-choice morphine, cyclazocine and saline discrimination paradigm: opioids with agonist and antagonist properties.

Rats were trained in a three-choice morphine (3.0 mg/kg), cyclazocine (0.3 mg/kg) and saline discrimination using a discrete-trials avoidance procedure. Behavior was considered to be under stimulus control when an animal reliably completed at least 18 trials of a 20-trial session on the correct lever after s.c. administration of either morphine, cyclazocine or saline. In tests of stimulus generalization, levorphanol produced a dose-related increase in trials completed on the morphine choice lever, whereas its optical enantiomer, dextrorphan, produced predominantly cyclazocine-appropriate respo

Impact of visual stimulus complexity on associative learning and associated reaction times in migraine patients.

The semantic complexity and verbalizability of visual stimuli can influence associative learning. The Rutgers Acquired Equivalence Test (RAET) uses semantically rich stimuli (faces and colored fish) to assess associative learning and generalization, while a modified version, the Polygon test, employs simpler stimuli with reduced semantic content (grayscale circles and geometric shapes). Although cognitive alterations are well-documented in migraine patients during interictal periods, the impact of visual stimulus complexity on associative learning and reaction times has not been studied. Phonological overlap alone does not mediate generalization in action-effect learning: Evidence from homophones.

Intentional action is guided by learned relations between actions and their effects, but it remains unclear which features of an effect support generalization of such learning. We tested whether phonological information can retrieve learned action-effect relations and bias voluntary action selection. Japanese homophones provide a stringent test because words can share pronunciation while differing in meaning and visual or orthographic form. In four preregistered experiments, Japanese participants learned arbitrary pairings between left/right keypresses and pictures or Kanji characters. They th

Effects of threat intensity on sensory preconditioning.

Although emotional intensity is known to shape fear generalization in direct conditioning, its impact on higher-order associative learning processes is unknown. Sensory preconditioning, a form of higher-order learning, allows us to infer potential threats in the absence of direct experience by linking neutral stimuli through prior associations. Here, we examined whether threat intensity during first-order conditioning amplifies sensory preconditioning. Participants first learned associations between neutral pairs of category images (preconditioning). In a subsequent Pavlovian conditioning phas

Effects of chlordiazepoxide training dose on the mixed agonist-antagonist properties of benzodiazepine receptor antagonist Ro 15-1788, in a drug discrimination procedure.

In experiment 1, rats (n = 12) were trained to discriminate the benzodiazepine (BDZ) compound chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 20 mg/kg, IP) from saline in a two-lever food-reinforced procedure, and subsequently were tested for stimulus control with different doses of CDP, Ro 15-1788 (a proposed BDZ receptor antagonist) and Ro 15-1788 plus 20 mg/kg CDP. Ro 15-1788 (0.63-40 mg/kg) dose-dependently antagonized CDP, and induced predominantly saline appropriate responding when administered alone. Thereafter, the same rats were retrained by progressively decreasing the training dose, to discriminate 2.5 mg/k

Temporal Dynamics of Ensemble Face Representations Under Magnocellular- and Parvocellular-Biased Visual Inputs: A Time-Resolved EEG Decoding Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ensemble perception enables the visual system to rapidly extract summary statistics from multiple objects. However, the temporal dynamics of ensemble average representations and their dependence on magnocellular-biased (M-biased) and parvocellular-biased (P-biased) visual information remain unclear. This study examined when ensemble face-gender information could be decoded under these two stimulus conditions. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy adults performed a two-alternative forced-choice gender judgment task with neutral face ensembles and single faces. M-biased stimuli w

Evidence for noradrenergic involvement in mediating the FG 7142 discriminative stimulus.

Rats were trained to discriminate the stimulus properties of the benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist beta-carboline-3-carboxylate acid methyl amide (FG 7142) (5.0 mg/kg) or the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist 17 alpha-hydroxyyohimban-16 alpha-carboxylic acid methyl ester (yohimbine) (3.0 mg/kg) from vehicle in a two-lever, food-motivated operant task. These compounds have in common a beta-carboline structure and anxiogenic behavioral profiles. The yohimbine discriminative stimulus was mimicked by the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist idazoxan and antagonized by the alph

Closed-loop stimulation of the medial septum terminates epileptic seizures.

Temporal lobe epilepsy with distributed hippocampal seizure foci is often intractable and its secondary generalization might lead to sudden death. Early termination through spatially extensive hippocampal intervention is not feasible directly, because of the large size and irregular shape of the hippocampus. In contrast, the medial septum is a promising target to govern hippocampal oscillations through its divergent connections to both hippocampi. Combining this 'proxy intervention' concept and precisely timed stimulation, we report here that closed-loop medial septum electrical stimulation ca

[Myoclonic hyperkinesis induced by repeated administration of picrotoxin into rat neostriatum].

The effects of three-week daily intrastriatal 45 mcg GABA, 5 and 15 mcg picrotoxin and 5 bicuculline microinjections in rats were investigated. The inhibition of avoidance conditioning in shuttle box was registered in first days of GABA microinjection; stereotyped behaviour and paradoxal freezing in further GABA effects were developed. After the short orofacial dyskinesia as the acute picrotoxin effects, the choreo-myoclonic limb jerks, with the distinct generalization stage were observed. Picrotoxin dose increasing in toxic convulsive status results. No any dystonia, but strong avoidance cond

A comparison of the Task Demonstration Model and the Standard Prompting Hierarchy in teaching word identification to persons with moderate retardation.

Six persons with moderate mental retardation were taught to identify three words by each of two different procedures. One, the Task Demonstration Model, was a fading procedure which relied on presenting many examples of both the correct and incorrect words while systematically increasing their similarity. The other, the Standard Prompting Hierarchy, is one of the most common procedures for teaching persons with mental retardation, and relied on a least-to-most intrusive prompting hierarchy. Data were presented in three phases and show that the Task Demonstration Model produced fewer errors in

Augmentation, not blocking, in an A+/AX+ flavor-conditioning procedure.

An A+/AX+ Pavlovian conditioning design typically produces weakened or blocked conditioning to stimulus X. Two experiments were conducted in which rats first received an odor (A+) paired with an emetic US, and then received odor and taste (AX+) paired with the US. In both experiments, the preconditioned odor facilitated conditioning to the taste. In Experiment 1, a group that received two odor-illness pairings in A+ conditioning had a stronger taste aversion than a group that only had a single odor-illness pairing. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the strengthened taste aversion in the A+/AX+ co

Near Misses in Slot Machine Gambling Developed Through Generalization of Total Wins.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the development of the near miss effect in slot machine gambling as a product of stimulus generalization from total wins. The study was conducted across two experiments. Twelve college students participated in the first experiment, which demonstrated that greater post-reinforcement pauses followed losing outcomes that were formally similar to total wins, relative to losing outcomes that were formally dissimilar [F (5, 7) = 5.24, p = .025] along a generalization gradient (R (2) = .96). Additionally, 11 out of 12 participants showed greater respon

Altered learning and transfer abilities in Korsakoff's syndrome depending on task complexity.

Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is characterized by episodic memory impairment due to damage to the medial diencephalic structures. Although commonly associated with chronic alcoholism, starvation due to the hunger strike is one of its nonalcoholic causes. Learning the stimulus-response associations and transferring the just-learned associations to novel combinations were previously tested by specific tasks in memory-impaired patients with hippocampal, basal forebrain, and basal ganglia damage. To add to this previous research, we aimed to use the same tasks in a group of patients with hunger strike

Treating selective mutism in a paediatric rehabilitation patient by altering environmental reinforcement contingencies.

Selective mutism is a disorder which can cause severe social and academic impairment, and for which a wide variety of treatment approaches have been used, with varying degrees of success. Selective mutism can be conceptualized as the lack of generalization of a class of operant responses (e.g. audible and comprehensible verbalizations) across environmental contexts. The rehabilitation hospital setting, in which the patient is seen daily by multiple people in multiple settings, is particularly well-suited for implementing a systematic behavioural intervention to establish verbal behaviour and s

Monetary loss alters perceptual thresholds and compromises future decisions via amygdala and prefrontal networks.

The influence of monetary loss on decision making and choice behavior is extensively studied. However, the effect of loss on sensory perception is less explored. Here, we use conditioning in human subjects to explore how monetary loss associated with a pure tone can affect changes in perceptual thresholds for the previously neutral stimulus. We found that loss conditioning, when compared with neutral exposure, decreases sensitivity and increases perceptual thresholds (i.e., a relative increase in the just-noticeable-difference). This was so even when compared with gain conditioning of comparab
