Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a primary etiological agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs) worldwide. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) UPEC strains, especially the globally disseminated ST131 clone, poses a critical health threat in regions like Pakistan, where comprehensive genomic data is limited. This study performed an in-depth genomic characterization of a newly isolated MDR UPEC strain (U1) and conducted a comparative pangenome analysis of 73 UPEC genomes from Pakistan. The overall cohort exhibited an average genome size of 5.2 Mb, an average GC content of 50.6%, a

OBJECTIVES: The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms for any infectious disease is a public health concern. Global efforts to control leprosy by intensive chemotherapy have led to a significant decrease in the number of registered patients. Currently recommended control measures for treating leprosy with multidrug therapy (MDT) were designed to prevent the spread of dapsone-resistant Mycobacterium leprae strains. Here we report the identification of MDR M. leprae from relapse leprosy patients from endemic regions in India.
METHODS: Resistance profiles to rifampicin, dapsone and of

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae is implicated in severe infections in humans and causes considerable financial losses in the aquaculture industry, particularly in tilapia farming. Given its dual threat to public health and food security, this study was conducted to comprehensively assess the prevalence, molecular identification, multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns, virulence traits, antimicrobial resistance genes, and pathogenic potential of S. agalactiae strains isolated from Oreochromis niloticus. Notably, this study highlights the detection of critical virulence genes (cfb, hylB, lmb,

BACKGROUND: Drug susceptibility testing (DST) remains an important concern for implementing treatment of MDR tuberculosis patients. Implementation of molecular tests for drug resistance identification would facilitate DST particularly in developing countries where culturing is difficult to perform. We have characterized multidrug resistant strains in Cambodia using MDTDRsl tests, drug target sequencing and phenotypic tests.
METHODS: A total of 65 non-MDR and 101 MDR TB isolates collected between May 2007 and June 2009 were tested for resistance to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides/cyclic p

To study antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Raoultella strains isolated from captive giant pandas. Non-duplicate fecal samples were collected from 128 giant pandas during 2017-2019. All isolated microbial strains were tested for antimicrobial drug susceptibility using BD verification panels. Four extended-spectrum β-lactamase resistance genes, nine virulence genes and six capsular serotype genes were detected using PCR. 42 K. pneumoniae and nine Raoultella strains were isolated from different giant pandas. Antibiotic resistance rates were 1.9%-23.5%, exce

To understand the mechanisms and epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance (AR), the genetic elements responsible must be identified. Due to the myriad of possible genes, a high-density genotyping technique is needed for initial screening. To achieve this, AR genes in the National Center for Biotechnology Information GenBank database were identified by their annotations and compiled into a nonredundant list of 775 genes. A DNA microarray was constructed of 70mer oligonucelotide probes designed to detect these genes encoding resistances to aminoglycosides, beta-lactams, chloramphenicols, glycope

Deletions of the 13q14 chromosome region are associated with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) and several other types of cancer, suggesting the presence of a tumor suppressor gene. In previous studies the minimal region of deletion (MDR) was mapped to a less than 300-kilobase (kb) interval bordered by the markers 173a12-82 and 138G4/1.3R. For the identification of the putative tumor suppressor gene, the entire MDR (approximately 347 kb) has been sequenced, and transcribed regions have been identified by exon trapping, EST-based full-length complementary DNA cloning, database homolog

This study aimed to characterize the relationship between the COX2 and ALOX5 genes, as well as their link with the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype in sensitive (K562) and MDR (K562-Lucena and FEPS) erythroleukemia cells. For this, the inhibitors of 5-LOX (zileuton) and COX-2 (acetylsalicylic acid-ASA) and cells with the silenced ABCB1 gene were used. The treatment with ASA caused an increase in the gene expression of COX2 and ABCB1 in both MDR cell lines, and a decrease in the expression of ALOX5 in the FEPS cells. Silencing the ABCB1 gene induced a decrease in COX2 expression and an incr

The global dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae pathotypes with multidrug-resistant (MDR) and hypervirulent traits poses a threat to public health. The situation in Armenia is unclear, and we performed a comprehensive characterisation of 48 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae, collected from 2018 to 2024. The majority of the isolates (64.58%) were extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and MDR. Genomic analysis of 21 isolates revealed the presence of international high-risk MDR clones (ST395, ST15, and ST307). The ST395 strains were isolated from children and resisted the first-line drugs such as b

A total of 2,280 nonduplicate clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, obtained nationwide from Korean non-tertiary care hospitals from 2002 to 2005, were identified and their susceptibilities to aminoglycosides, antipseudomonal penicillins, carbapenems, cephalosporins, monobactams, and quinolones were studied, together with their production of beta- lactamases. Using disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration tests, it was found that 2.9% of isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa. An EDTA-disk synergy test, PCR amplification with specifically designed primers, and

Multidrug resistance (MDR) genes are abundant in Streptomyces genomes, and yet these bacteria are generally drug sensitive under routine laboratory conditions, indicating low or no expression of these genes. Drug-resistant mutations have been isolated that lie in regulatory genes adjacent to the MDR genes, suggesting that resistance arises by derepression. This study identified a divergently oriented pair consisting of a TetR-family regulator (ebrS) and a major facilitator-family MDR pump (ebrC) gene in Streptomyces lividans, which is widely conserved in Streptomyces species. Carbapenems are the last resort antimicrobials for the treatment of extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing Enterobacteriaceae. Emergence of carbapenems resistant group B2 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is a major concern because of their high virulence. Prevalence of these enzymes and multidrug resistance (MDR) among B2 UPEC isolates from Iraqi outpatients with acute urinary tract infection (UTI) was evaluated in this research. Urine cultures were performed and the isolates were identified biochemically. Escherichia coli isolates were tested for phylogroup reference by quadraplex PCR,

Burkholderia is a bacterial genus comprising several pathogenic species, including two species highly pathogenic for humans, B. pseudomallei and B. mallei. B. thailandensis is a weakly pathogenic species closely related to both B. pseudomallei and B. mallei. It is used as a study model. These bacteria are able to exhibit multiple resistance mechanisms towards various families of antibiotics. By sequentially plating B. thailandensis wild type strains on chloramphenicol we obtained several resistant variants. This chloramphenicol-induced resistance was associated with resistance against structur

INTRODUCTION: Dairy farming plays a vital role in agriculture and nutrition; however, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among bacterial pathogens poses significant risks to public health and animal welfare. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains are of particular concern due to their potential for zoonotic transmission and resistance to multiple antibiotics. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of AMR and analyzed the genomes of two MDR E. coli isolated from dairy cows in Shihezi City.
METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from dairy cows, and E. coli strain
