Retention in Georgia opioid substitution therapy program and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse has been considered as a growing challenge in Georgia that is closely linked with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C transmission due to unsafe injection and other uncontrolled behaviors. Methadone maintenance therapy is one of the major treatment options for opioid-dependent individuals. It has proven efficacy in decreasing illegal opioid consumption and criminal behavior as well as reducing the level of HIV infection, mortality, HCV infection, and increasing social functioning. METHODS: The data was initially extracted from the electronic databas

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF CLINICALLY MANIFESTED ACUTE HEPATITIS C CASES IN GEORGIA.

Hepatitis C virus is responsible for the majority of persistent viral infections of the liver, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and/ or hepatocellular carcinoma. Two strategies are important to curtailing the rising prevalence of disease: efficient diagnosis of acute hepatitis and identification of the likely mode of transmission. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical and epidemiological hallmarks of acute hepatitis C. During 2013-2015, 31 patients were hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute C hepatitis. According to epidemiological data, the primary mode of transmission is duri

Notes from the Field: Rickettsia parkeri Rickettsiosis - Georgia, 2012-2014.

During 2012-2014, five cases of Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis were identified by a single urgent care practice in Georgia, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Atlanta. Symptom onset occurred during June-October, and all patients had a known tick bite. Patients ranged in age from 27 to 72 years (median = 53 years), and all were male. The most commonly reported initial signs were erythema (n = 3) and swelling (n = 2) at the site of the bite. Two patients reported fever and a third patient reported a rash and lymphadenopathy without fever. Other symptoms included myalgia (n = 3), chill

Disparities in influenza treatment among disabled Medicaid patients in Georgia.

OBJECTIVES: We explored possible disparities in seasonal influenza treatment in Georgia's disabled Medicaid population. We sought to determine whether racial/ethnic, geographic, or gender disparities existed in antiviral drugs usage in the treatment of influenza. METHODS: Medicaid claims were analyzed from 69 556 clients with disabilities enrolled in a Georgia Medicaid disease management program. RESULTS: There were 519 patients who met inclusion criteria (i.e., adults aged 18-64 years with an influenza diagnosis on a 2006 or 2007 Medicaid claim). Roughly one third (36.2%) of patients were c

Population-based prevalence of perinatal exposure to cocaine--Georgia, 1994.

Maternal cocaine use during pregnancy is associated with adverse health effects for both the mother and the infant (e.g., intrauterine growth retardation, placental abruption, preterm delivery, congenital anomalies, and cerebral injury). Because cocaine use often occurs concurrently with use of other substances (e.g., cigarettes and alcohol) and because fear of prosecution may deter women from obtaining medical care, the occurrence of perinatal exposure to cocaine has not been well characterized. In Georgia, the routine collection of dried blood spots (DBSs) from a heelstick of newborns for sc

Reticuloendotheliosis in a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) from coastal Georgia.

An emaciated wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) exhibiting neurologic signs was found on Ossabaw Island, Chatham County, Georgia (USA) on 11 April 1989. The neurologic abnormalities observed included ataxia, drooping wings, head tremors, torticollis, and circling. At necropsy, discrete yellowish-white nodules, varying in size from 2 to 5 mm, were present in the spleen. White nodular lesions approximately 2 mm in diameter were observed beneath the mucosal surface of the distal esophagus. Histopathologic examination of the splenic nodules disclosed large numbers of primitive lymphoreticular cells

Knowledge regarding respiratory allergy among primary care physicians in Georgia.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: The prevalence of respiratory allergies has been increasing worldwide, yet there are limited data on the knowledge and practices of primary care physicians (PCPs) in Georgia, where access to primary care has expanded under the Universal Health Care Programme. Given that PCPs are often the first point of contact for patients with allergy symptoms, this study aimed to evaluate their education and knowledge regarding respiratory allergies in three regions of Georgia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among PCPs in Tbilisi, Samegrelo, and Kakheti. A structured qu

Survival from five common cancers in Georgia, 2015-2019 (CONCORD).

BACKGROUND: Population-based cancer survival is a key metric of the effectiveness of health systems in managing cancer. Data from population-based cancer registries are essential for producing reliable and robust cancer survival estimates. Georgia established a national population-based cancer registry on 1 January 2015. This is the first analysis of population-based cancer survival from Georgia. METHODS: Data were available from the national cancer registry for 16,359 adults who were diagnosed with a cancer of the stomach, colon, rectum, breast (women) or cervix during 2015-2019. We estimate

Arthropod Borne and Zoonotic Infections Among Military Personnel in Georgia.

Military personnel are at an increased risk for exposure to arthropod- borne and zoonotic pathogens. The prevalence of these pathogens has not been adequately described in the country of Georgia. As the Georgian military moves toward an increased level of capability and the adoption of European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization standards, international field exercises will become more frequent and will likely involve an increasing number of international partners. This study was undertaken with the goal of defining the arthropod-borne and zoonotic pathogen threat in Georgia so force

Evolutionary dynamics of West Nile virus in Georgia, 2001-2011.

From 1999-2001, West Nile virus (WNV) spread throughout the eastern United States (US) and was first detected in Georgia in 2001. To date, the virus has been detected in over 2,500 dead wild bird and mosquito samples from across Georgia. We sequenced the premembrane (preM) and envelope gene (E) (2004 bp) from 111 isolates collected from 2001 to 2011. To assess viral gene flow from other geographic regions in the US, we combined our data with WNV sequences available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and performed phylogenetic analysis. We found evidence that WNV isolat

Fertility treatments and craniosynostosis: California, Georgia, and Iowa, 1993-1997.

OBJECTIVE: Craniosynostosis, a malformation caused by premature closure of 1 or more cranial sutures, is a rare birth defect usually of unknown cause; however, it is often associated with advanced maternal age. Because fertility treatments are also associated with increased maternal age, this study investigated the possible association between fertility treatments and craniosynostosis. METHODS: Data from the Birth Defect Risk Factor Surveillance study were used, which included infants who were delivered from 1993 through 1997 in California, Georgia, and Iowa. Cases were defined as infants who

A supplement to the Scolytinae and Platypodinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) faunas of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.

Bark beetles and pinhole borers of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan were surveyed between 2003 to 2025. Specimens were collected using pheromone traps baited with Acuwit, IAC Ecolure, Sexowit, Tomowit, and ethanol; 0.5-m-long logs exposed for bark beetle colonisation; direct hand collecting in the field; searches for potential feeding substrates; and rearing from infested host material. We present 51 faunistic records of bark beetles and pinhole borers, comprising 44 species from Georgia and seven from Kyrgyzstan. One taxon is newly recorded from Georgia: Pityophthoruspityographus cribratus. Finally, we

Counting the savings: impact of Georgia's drug policy interventions on households.

INTRODUCTION: Access to essential medicines is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage. In Georgia, as in many low- and middle-income countries, out-of-pocket payments (OOPs) for medicines remain a major financial burden, particularly for low-income households. Despite the launch of Georgia's Universal Health Coverage Program in 2013, medicines still constitute the largest share of OOP health expenditures, increasing the risk of impoverishment. This study, therefore, aims to assesses the impact of three pharmaceutical policy interventions introduce

Bark and Ambrosia Beetle Communities in Hazelnut Orchards of Italy and Georgia.

Bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are major pests of agricultural and forest systems and include some species which attack hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) as well. Although hazelnut cultivation is increasingly threatened by insect and mite pests, yet little is known about how management practices can reduce infestations. This study investigated bark and ambrosia beetles in hazelnut orchards from two highly productive areas: Viterbo district (central Italy) and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region (Republic of Georgia). Three phytosanitary management strategies were comp
