Nurses' Decisions to Press Charges Against Hypothetical Patients Who Exhibit Violent Behavior.

Background: Patients are the most frequent perpetrators of physical violence against nurses. In the United States, most states have established laws designating assault against nurses a felony, or serious crime. It is unknown what reasons nurses have for pressing charges or not pressing charges against patients. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' decisions regarding pressing charges when patients exhibit violent behavior. Methods: This study used a mixed-method, cross-sectional, descriptive design. Three unfolding case studies were presented in an electronic survey. Twel

Achieving age-friendly cancer care through the NICHE practice model.

More than 50% of cancers occur in adults aged 70 years and older, and this population accounts for 60% of all cancer deaths. Cancer care for older adults is complex and influenced by comorbidities, age-related physiologic changes, social needs, and cognitive or functional limitations. This NICHE column addresses the alignment of the NICHE practice model and resources to advance evidence-based care of older adults with cancer in conjunction with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Age-Friendly 4Ms framework and international professional oncology nursing practice standards.

[Occupational burnout in geriatrics, an Echo complex].

Caregivers in nursing homes are exposed to numerous risk factors of occupational burnout. Lack of time, work overload, caring for frail people, an imbalance between hierarchical demands and the amount of decision-making power accorded to them, as well as insufficient resources: it is difficult to provide individualised care to patients in these conditions. There are, however, ways to improve this situation.

The needs of patients with noncancer diseases and their families from hospital-based specialized palliative care teams in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-based specialized palliative care teams (HSPC) are important for symptom management and ethics support, especially during complex decision-making, but the needs of patients with noncancer diseases and their families from the HSPC are unclear. This study aimed to (I) compare the prevalence of symptom between patients with and without cancer and explore changes in symptom intensity after HSPC consultation in patients with noncancer; (II) determine factors related to ethics support; and (III) compare the percentage of request contents from patients and their families when a c

Dementia in the primary care setting.

The first step in assessing behavioral problems in a patient with dementia is to understand why these behaviors occur and what might be causing them. In some instances, new or longstanding problem behaviors may be related to changes occurring within the brain, but in other cases may be related to a physical problem. The second step is to determine if there is a pattern to the patient's behavior. Ask the caregiver to keep a behavioral log for 1 week. Analyze the log for any clues and triggers that may direct you toward making environmental changes. Once you have the behavioral log, the third st

Caring for the Rapidly Aging Incarcerated Population: The Role of Policy.

The population of incarcerated adults in the United States is aging rapidly. Incarcerated adults experience accelerated aging, the process in which exposure to incarceration speeds up biological aging. The current article highlights unique structural factors and care practices that incarcerated older adults face in correctional and community health systems. These factors and practices are often in direct opposition to age-friendly care. Opportunities exist to expand research, modify existing policies, and change current care practices. Given their expertise in health system processes, gerontol

BACKGROUND: Although home visits improve outcomes among older adults, expanding the reach of geriatric home-based programs has been constrained by physical, cognitive, and technological barriers common among older persons as well as facility barriers (e.g., limited staffing). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of a hybrid-virtual home visit model (TeleGRACE). DESIGN: A quality improvement project with an observation cohort design using propensity score weighting. PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling older adults with a geriatric syndrome after discharge from a hospital stay or emergency

Protecting the skin of the elderly patient in the intensive care unit.

This article summarizes the ways in which factors in the ICU setting can affect skin breakdown in the elderly patient. The effects of aging, the presence of underlying chronic factors, and the imposition of critical illness may affect the skin of the elderly patient in ways not experienced in a younger patient population. It is important that ICU nurses recognize the unique differences and challenges in maintaining the skin integrity of the elderly, critically ill patient. Even though not all pressure ulcers in this population will be preventable in the ICU setting, an awareness of special ris
