After fixation of a chevron osteotomy for hallux valgus of the left foot with a bioabsorbable copolymer, a delayed onset of pain at the surgical site developed. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion that was unresponsive to conservative treatment. Surgical excision determined the lesion to be a giant-cell granuloma formed as a foreign body response to the degrading copolymer.

Tophaceous pseudogout is a rare form of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease. Half of the 31 reported cases of tophaceous pseudogout are in the head and neck region. This patient presented with a parotid tumour, that was initially suspected to be malignant based on radiology and cytology. Operation disclosed a tumour progressing to the base of the skull, histological examination showed inflammatory cells, macrophages, metaplastic chondroid cells and giant cells of foreign-body-type. X-ray diffraction revealed two crystal forms of CPPD.

Two otherwise healthy pregnant women presented with intrauterine fetal demise and underwent unremarkable induction of labor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patients who were treated with trapeziectomy and Dacron interposition in our hospital and to describe the incidence of foreign body reactions. Between 2004 and 2010, 10 women with trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis underwent Dacron interpositional arthroplasty. One patient had surgery in both hands. Implants were removed in two patients, 5 and 8 years postoperatively. Histological analysis confirmed the presence of a foreign body reaction with giant cells in both cases. An unusual case of hyaline ring granuloma arising from the connective tissue wall of a residual apical periodontal cyst is reported. Hyaline rings with foreign-body type giant cell inclusions were a significant feature in the histopathologic diagnosis. From 280 lesions from normal cattle at slaughter, 10 were found to contain thin, branching, Gram-positive organisms belonging to the Nocardia/Streptomyces group and this was confirmed by culture in 3 cases. Macroscopically the older lesions were similar in appearance to those of tuberculosis. Microscopically, all lesions contained numerous foreign body giant cells and thin, branching organisms. The older lesions also contained areas of necrosis, caseation, mineralisation and fibrosis.

PATIENT: A 32-year-old male had an injury of his right eye by hot liquid plastic (Ultradur R). Intraoperatively, the eye was found broadly penetrated and filled up by more than 50% with ragged pieces of plastic. Computed tomography three days after wound closure revealed remaining foreign body material. As function was totally lost no further operation was considered. Seven weeks after the trauma, the eye was enucleated because of a painful phthisis. Histology showed numerous giant cells.

A 7-year-old boy had itching, foreign body sensation, and redness in his right eye. Unilateral cobblestone papillae and a shield ulcer were found. Topical antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and steroids led to marked improvement. Unilateral vernal keratoconjunctivitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of unilateral giant papillary conjunctivitis.

We report a patient with rupture of the ring extensor tendon associated with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease of the wrist. Crystal deposits were noted in synovium and the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Histological examination revealed chronic synovitis with foreign body giant cell reaction to crystals. The cause of the tendon rupture was synovitis due to crystal deposition.
