Immunoassays are important tools in diagnosing giardiasis, though there are several controversies inherent in the existing methods. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the pooled diagnostic accuracy of immunoassays in detecting the gastrointestinal disease-causing parasite Giardia lamblia. Our comprehensive search, which included PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect from 2000 up until 2023, resulted in 34 studies reporting the performance of 24 different immunoassays. The overall pooled sensitivity and specificity of immunoassays and subgroup analyses were determined. Not

BACKGROUND: The adverse outcomes of malnutrition on the development of a child are well acknowledged as are the broad variety of contextual factors that may impact child nutritional status. Adequate nutrient intake and the adoption of appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene measures are largely documented for their positive influence on health. Improved sanitation and protection from human feces can significantly lower the incidence of diarrhea and environmental enteropathy. However, the impact of excessive exposure to animal feces on child health is less well documented.

Giardia duodenalis is considered a species complex that is divided into 8 genetically distinct but morphologically identical assemblages (A-H). Assemblages C-H are generally host adapted, while A and B infect both people and animals and are considered potentially zoonotic. Furthermore, within assemblage A there are four subtypes (AI, AII, AIII, and AIV) of varying zoonotic potential; human isolates belong to AI and AII, while animal isolates belong to AI, AIII and AIV. Assemblages A, B, C, D, and F have all been reported from cats. The objective of this study was to determine the assemblage(s)

Whipple' disease is mainly characterized by affecting the digestive system, although it can be a multisystemic process with different clinical symptoms. The bacillus causing the disease has been isolated and cultivated in 2000 and the genome sequence has been recently analyzed in 2003, which means new perspectives for its diagnosis and treatment. Giardiasis is an infestation caused by a protozoo and may cause a malabsorption syndrome or run in a subclinic way. The case of a middle-aged male is described, who after a three-year period of migratory arthralgias, showed weight loss, diarrheas and

The microaerophilic flagellated protist Giardia intestinalis, the commonest protozoal agent of intestinal infections worldwide, is of uncertain phylogeny, but is usually regarded as the earliest branching of the eukaryotic clades. Under strictly anaerobic conditions, a mass spectrometric investigation of gas production indicated a low level of generation of dihydrogen (2 nmol x min(-1) per 10(7) organisms), about 10-fold lower than that in Trichomonas vaginalis under similar conditions. Hydrogen evolution was O2 sensitive, and inhibited by 100 microM metronidazole. Fluorescent labelling of G.

Giardia duodenalis, a globally distributed zoonotic intestinal protozoan, poses significant threats to public health and livestock industries. Neutrophils (polymorphonuclear neutrophils, PMNs) eliminate pathogens through multiple mechanisms, including neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. However, the interaction between G. duodenalis cysts and bovine PMNs remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that G. duodenalis cysts can trigger NET formation in bovine PMNs, as evidenced by immunofluorescence co-localization of extracellular DNA and neutrophil elastase (NE). NET formation w

Autoimmune pancreatitis type 2 is a relatively novel entity with some still controversial issues. The current diagnostic algorithm relies on imaging studies and histology. Therapy includes corticosteroids with consequently low risk of relapse in the following year. However, the pathogenesis remains unclear, and data are insufficient for long-term prognosis. We have treated a 17-year-old boy whose autoimmune pancreatitis type 2 was revealed during surgery for a pre-existing biliary tract anomaly with concurrent protozoal infection. We discuss the co-occurrence of these conditions in terms of ev

Parasitic protozoa Giardia intestinalis and Cryptosporidium parvum are causative agents for giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis, respectively. These infections are mostly associated with waterborne diseases. The discharges from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that reach surface waters cause waterborne transmission because there are no regulations for monitoring these protozoa. This emphasizes how crucial the removal capacities of WWTPs to prevent the spread of infectious parasitic pathogens. For this reason, in this study, five different types of WWTPs including conventional activated sludge

The microaerotolarent amitochondriate protozoan Giardia lamblia causes Giardiasis and produces a unique enzyme called Phospholipase B (PLB) in contrast to higher eukaryotes. The enzyme is produced upon induction with oxidative (H2O2) stress, thus leading to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production. It exists in dimeric form, and its molecular weight is 56 kDa. This PLB was extracellularly cloned in the pET21d vector. The ORF is 1620 bp (Genbank accession no. -OM939681) long and codes for a protein 539 amino acid long, with a 15 amino acid long amino-terminal signal peptide. The highest enzyme activi

The deep-branching protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia is the causative agent of the intestinal disease giardiasis. Consistent with its proposed evolutionary position, many pathways are minimalistic or divergent, including its actin cytoskeleton. Giardia is the only eukaryote known to lack all canonical actin-binding proteins. Previously, our lab identified a number of noncanonical Giardia lamblia actin (GlActin) interactors; however, these proteins appeared to interact only with monomeric or globular actin (G-actin) rather than with filamentous actin (F-actin). To identify F-actin interactors,

Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. intestinalis, G. lamblia) is an important zoonotic parasite infecting livestock (including pigs) through ingesting cysts in contaminated food or water. This parasite has been classified into eight different genetic assemblages, A to H. Here, we examined the individual-level prevalence of G. duodenalis in domestic pig farms and confirmed host specificity by genotype comparisons. Samples were collected from southern and central Korea, between May 2017 and January 2019. DNA directly extracted from 745 pig fecal specimens were tested by PCR for G. duodenalis small subun

Until now, few cases of coincidental giardiasis and pancreatic tumors have been described. Among these cases, three described giardiasis cases coincided with confirmed pancreatic cancer. We present another case of Giardia infection coexisting with pancreatic cancer in a 67-year-old man who suffered from stenosis of the distal ductus choledochus combined with a hypoechoic mass in the head of the pancreas. The diagnostic conclusion of suspicious adenocarcinoma was based on endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) biopsy and confirmed by a partial duodenopancreatectomy. On bloody cy

Giardia duodenalis is an ubiquitous parasitic pathogen that causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Failures in drug therapy are commonly due to poor patient compliance as a result of the need for repeated administration, off target drug effects and increasing parasite drug resistance. In this study the in vitro efficacy and selectivity of the aminoguanidine compound robenidine and 2 structural analogues against Giardia were determined. After 5 h exposure to each compound the IC50 was as low as 0.2 μM with corresponding MLCs as low as 2.8 μM. This is in contrast to metronidazole

New information generated since 2016 from the application of molecular tools to infections with Giardia and Cryptosporidium is critically summarised. In the context of molecular epidemiology, nomenclature, taxonomy, in vitro culture, detection, zoonoses, population genetics and pathogenicity, are covered. Whole genome sequencing has had the greatest impact in the last three years. Future advances will provide a much better understanding of the zoonotic potential of both parasites, their diversity and how this is linked to pathogenesis in different hosts.

Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal protozoan capable of causing gastrointestinal disease in a range of vertebrate hosts. It is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. Understanding the epidemiology of G. duodenalis in animals is important, both for public health and for the health of the animals it infects. We investigated the occurrence of G. duodenalis in wild Swedish red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes ), with the aim of providing preliminary information on how this abundant predator might be involved in the transmission and epidemiology of G. duodenalis . Fecal samples (n=104) were analysed for G. du

Researchers continue to rely on axenic cultivation of Giardia duodenalis trophozoites in vitro to study the life cycle and host-parasite interactions of G. duodenalis and to develop vaccines and drugs to prevent and treat giardiasis. The majority of in vitro studies of G. duodenalis have used a small subset of isolates, mostly of assemblage A, and these isolates are usually originally isolated from humans. The most commonly used isolate for lab studies is known as WB. Canine giardiasis is a disease of veterinary importance, but it may also be of relevance in zoonotic transmission. Few G. duode

Trials for identifying efficient anti-giardial agents are still ongoing. Nowadays, bacteriocins have attracted the attention as potential antimicrobial compounds. For the first time, the current study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of bacteriocins derived from newly isolated Egyptian strains of probiotics Lactobacilli; L. acidophilus (P106) and L. plantarum (P164) against Giardia lamblia. Bacteriocins' efficacy was evaluated both in vitro; by growth inhibition and adherence assays, and in vivo; through estimation of parasite density, intestinal histopathological examination and ultrastruct

Giardiasis constitutes an important public health problem in the world. Contamination of the water with fecal materials including viruses and pathogenic protozoa still represents an environmental health hazard, especially in rural areas. The survey study evaluated the relation between seropositivity and some risk factors. Moreover, the study compared between the serological IgG and IgM level and antigen detection methods for the diagnosis of giardiasis. The results indicate that sex distribution and age were the mean risk factors for seroprevelence. In this study, sera samples were employed in
