Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology1997eng
Eight specimens each of the following groups were investigated: gingival pyogenic granuloma, fibrous epulis, calcifying fibrous epulis, peripheral giant cell granuloma, giant cell fibroma (four gingival, four non-gingival), denture-irritation hyperplasia and fibroepithelial polyp. These lesions have diverse histopathological appearances but the composition of their connective tissue is poorly defined. The elastic system consists of a complex mixture of glycoproteins that in normal oral mucosa form three differentially distributed fibre types; oxytalan, elaunin and elastic. The elastic system w

BACKGROUND: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) can occur in patients maintained on immunosuppressive therapy following transplantation. This paper describes two cases of PTLD occurring in gingival tissues, in patients receiving ciclosporin following cardiac transplantation.
TREATMENT: The lesions were localised to gingival tissues, mimicking ciclosporin-induced gingival overgrowth. They were removed surgically and the ciclosporin dose reduced to help prevent recurrence.
CONCLUSION: The importance of histopathological examination of all tissue removed during routine gingivect

This is the first reported case of fatal visceral Kaposi's sarcoma which presented with oral lesions and in which skin lesions were absent throughout the course of the disease. Both clinical and histologic recognition may be difficult because of the similarity of the lesions to pyogenic granuloma.

INTRODUCTION: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) of minor salivary glands (MSG) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. It usually affects the palate and the base of the tongue, and more rarely the parotid gland. We report a very rare maxillary localization.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old male patient, without prior medical history, was referred to us for a painless gingival lesion of the right maxilla, extending from tooth 14 to 17, having appeared a few months before. The clinical examination was otherwise normal. Biopsy proved the d

Plexiform schwannoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the neural sheath characterized by a multinodular plexiform growth pattern. Only 5% of schwannomas have a plexiform or multinodular growth pattern. Schwannoma apparently derives from the Schwann cells. Extracranially, 25% of all schwannomas are located in the head and neck region, but only 1% show an intraoral origin. The intraoral lesions show a predilection for the tongue, followed by the palate, buccal mucosa, lip and gingival. Microscopic examination is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Characteristic histological signs are the palisading

A 35-year-old patient presented with a painless, broad-based exophytic lesion in the buccal interdental region between teeth 13 and 14. Despite oral hygiene efforts the lesion persisted for around one year. Radiology excluded bone involvement, and histopathology after excision confirmed a fibromatous epulis, which is characterized by collagen-rich connective tissue. There was no recurrence within one-year follow-up. Surgical removal proved to be efficient.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that rarely affects children and occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium and gastrointestinal tract. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is considered rare probably because of the scarcity of smooth muscle tissue in the oral cavity. The most common intraoral sites for leiomyoma are lips, palate and tongue. The purpose of this case report is to present the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of a rare case of oral leiomyoma in a 13-year-old girl with a 4-month history of a swelling in her left mandibular area extending from first molar to

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of primitive mesenchyme exhibiting skeletal muscle differentiation. Oral rhabdomyosarcoma is rare and accounts for only 0.04% of all head and neck malignancies.
METHODS: A 33-year-old woman presented with an erythematous gingival mass involving the anterior maxillary gingiva. The lesion had been present for > or =13 months before presentation, and in recent months, it had become intermittently painful.
RESULTS: Clinical examination exhibited erythema and enlargement of the interdental papillae between the left maxillary canine, lateral inc

Congenital epulis is a rare, benign, neonatal tumor in the oral cavity. Its size can reach several centimeters, posing an obstruction to breathing and feeding. Prenatal diagnosis provides an opportunity to adequately prepare for delivery, including securing the airway, or even ex utero intrapartum treatment. The authors present the case of a newborn girl, whose postnatally discovered lesions suggested congenital epulis. The operation took place a few hours after birth, the histological examination of the excised tumor concluded the presumed diagnosis. Since its first description in 1871, less

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) accounts for 7% of all smooth tissue sarcomas. The rarity of smooth muscle cells in the oral cavity makes LMS a rare tumor in this localization. We report a case of gingival LMS in a 43-year-old woman. We reviewed 23 cases of LMS or the oral cavity report in the literature since 1980. Age of occurrence varied from 2.5 to 63 years with a predominance in the 20 to 30 years age range. In two-thirds of the cases, the first symptom was the development of a painful mass. In half the mass developed in the maxilla and in one-quarter it occurred in the gingival mucosa alone. In nea

Melanoma is the ninth most prevalent and the second most lethal tumour. The aetiology and pathogenesis remain uncertain. It occurs in elderly people, over the fifth decade, and is predominant in males. Clinically, they present as an asymptomatic macular or nodular growth. The prognosis is impacted by the size of the tumour and distant metastases. Patients with distant metastases have a 5-year survival rate of less than 30%, constituting metastasis as the major cause of melanoma-related fatality. Currently, the mainstay of treatment for metastatic melanoma is immunotherapy due to the inoperable

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common oral malignancy, and somatic mutations in some driver genes have been implicated in SCC development. Clear cell SCC (CCSCC) is a rare histological variant of SCC, and various clear cell neoplasms must be considered in the differential diagnosis of CCSCC in the oral cavity. Based on a limited number of CCSCC cases reported in the oral cavity, CCSCC is considered an aggressive variant of SCC with a poor prognosis; however, its genetic characteristics remain unknown.
METHODS: A maxillary gingival tumor in an 89-year-old female was desc

This paper describes the smokeless tobacco use practices and oral health problems of members of a minor league professional baseball team. Seventeen of 25 ball-players reported current use of smokeless tobacco. Gingival recession and lesions in the oral mucosa were more common in smokeless tobacco users than nonusers. Reported use of smokeless tobacco was greater during baseball season than in the off-season. Of the 19 current and past users, 15 reported first using smokeless tobacco after entering professional baseball. To discourage the use of smokeless tobacco by professional athletes, team

Angiofibrolipoma is a rare histopathological variant of lipoma, characterized by mature adipocytes, blood vessels and dense collagenous tissue. It is seldom seen in the oral and maxillofacial region. Diagnosis of angiofibrolipoma is only possible based on its histopathological features. This report presents the case of a 63-year-old male patient with the complaint of a polyp-like mass, felt from the left retromolar pad region. The mass was found as a small prominent lesion that had grown gradually for 1.5 years. Our differential diagnosis was irritation fibroma and fibrous pyogenic granuloma.

Focal reactive overgrowths are among the most common oral mucosal lesions. The gingiva is a significant site affected by these lesions, when triggered by chronic inflammation in response to microorganisms in dental plaque. Myofibroblasts are differentiated fibroblasts that actively participate in diseases characterized by tissue fibrosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of stromal myofibroblasts in the main focal reactive overgrowths of the gingiva: focal fibrous hyperplasia (FFH), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), pyogenic granuloma (PG), and peripheral giant cell g
