Development of periodontal disease in a single flock of sheep: clinical signs, morphology of subgingival plaque and influence of antimicrobial agents.

The clinical development of broken mouth over a single reproductive year and the effect of two broad spectrum antibacterial agents upon it was followed in 72 Scottish Blackface ewes aged between two and three years. Using a number of dental health indices especially developed for the purpose, the amount of gingivitis, tooth movement, gum recession and pocketing were quantified and graphed for both the whole population and each group in the drug trial. All clinical features except movement fluctuated significantly with time, the fluctuations often being associated with nutritional or other envi

Evaluation of Periodontal Health Status in Pre and Postmenopausal Women with Periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is influenced by various risk factors, including hormonal changes in women, such as those occurring during menopause, which have been linked to periodontal deterioration and osteoporosis. This study assessed and compared the periodontal and gingival health of premenopausal and postmenopausal women. METHODOLOGY: In the study, thirty female patients with age between 25 and 65 years, who visited the Department of Periodontology at SPPGIDMS, Lucknow, and were diagnosed with periodontitis with pocket depths greater than 5 mm, were analyzed. The patients were divided

[pH determination in human crevicular fluids. Examination of the pH meter and evaluation of the correlation between pH level and clinical findings or the microflora in each periodontal pocket].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy and reproduction of a microelectrode with a glass capillary, and to discuss the correlation between the pH level and the microflora in periodontal pockets or the clinical findings in the various stages of periodontal disease. The upper or lower anterior teeth of 34 patients with mild to severe periodontal disease were examined. Before the measurement, supragingival plaque was removed from each tooth. A special glass capillary was incorporated in the microelectrode to cover its tip, so that it would not touch the pocket walls or tooth su

Local and systemic antibody response to putative periodontopathogens in patients with chronic periodontitis: correlation with clinical indices.

Specific immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgA and IgM antibody titres to Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in serum and gingival crevicular fluid at 5 sites in each of 20 chronic periodontitis patients. Specific serum antibody titres correlated with mean gingival crevicular fluid titres. The 3 immunoglobulin subclass responses (IgA, IgG and IgM) to P. gingivalis correlated. A comparison of sites with probing depth < 4 mm and > or = 4 mm showed that the latter group had significantly lower gingival crevicular fluid IgG ti

A clinical study comparing the width of attached gingiva and the prevalence of gingival recessions.

One hundred preclinical year dental students were examined. Oral hygiene status and gingival condition were determined using the Plaque Index score (Silness & Löe 1964) and the Gingival Index score systems (Löe & Silness 1963). The width of the attached gingiva and the depth of the gingival pockets were evaluated. The gingival recessions were recorded and their heights measured from the CEJ to the gingival margin. No significant correlation was found between oral hygiene and gingival recession, oral hygiene and width of attached gingival conditions and width of attached gingiva. Only a negativ

Clinical observations of the effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on human periodontal disease. II. Ultrasonic scaling and root planing for 6 months.

The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate the short-term (six months) effects of clinical trials of nonsurgical periodontal therapy. The subjects studied included consisted of 34 patients, 24-52 years of age (836 teeth), with various degrees of advanced periodontitis. Following a baseline examination which included assessments of the gingival index (GI), plaque index (PlI), calculus index (CI), probing depth, and attachment level, the patients were subjected to nonsurgical therapy. Differences between various treatment intervals for the pockets initially measuring 1-3 mm, 4-6 mm, a

Dimensions of diastemata and associated periodontal food pockets in donkey cheek teeth.

Equine cheek teeth (CT) diastemata often cause deep periodontal food pocketing and are therefore regarded as a painful dental disorder of equidae. However there appears to be no information available on the size or shape of these diastemata. This post mortem study examined 16 donkey skulls (mean age = 32-years) containing 45 CT diastemata to define the anatomical shape and dimensions of these diastemata, and of the associated periodontal food pockets that occur with this disorder. Diastemata were found to more commonly involve mandibular (56.0%) compared with maxillary CT (44.0%), and 71.0% of

Detection of the amoeba Entamoeba gingivalis in periodontal pockets.

Periodontitis is a public health issue, being one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. However, the aetiology of the disease is still unclear: genetics of patients cannot explain the dispersed or isolated localisation of gingival pockets, while bacteria-based models are insufficient to distinguish gingivitis and periodontitis. The possible role of parasites in the establishment of periodontitis has been poorly studied until now. The aim of this project was to study a potential link between colonisation of gingival crevices by the amoeba Entamoeba gingivalis and periodontitis. In eight dif

Microvasculature in gingivitis and chronic periodontitis: disruption of vascular networks with protracted inflammation.

Gingivitis occurring when bacterial plaque accumulates in the gingival crevice provides a convenient and interesting model for chronic inflammation in humans. In some patients, gingivitis progresses to the destructive lesion of periodontitis, involving the formation of periodontal pockets. The basis for pocket formation and progression is not as yet clear, although neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) appear to play a protective role. Vascular changes appear to either facilitate or inhibit PMN function with the effect of either protecting from, or stimulating, periodontitis. Contrar

Conventional Gingivectomy Procedure in the Management of Orthodontic-Induced Gingival Overgrowth: A Case Report.

Gingival enlargement (GE) can result from gingival inflammation, fibrous overgrowth, or a combination of both factors. Various etiological factors contribute to GE, including low-grade trauma, iatrogenic causes, drug-induced effects, systemic diseases, plaque accumulation, hormonal influences, vitamin deficiencies, genetic predispositions, and idiopathic reasons. Effective treatment in clinical practice hinges on accurately diagnosing the underlying cause. Among these, plaque-induced inflammation is the most common, driven by the accumulation of plaque and calculus. One challenge in maintainin

Relationship of gingival thickness and bleeding to loss of probing attachment in shallow sites following nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

Periodontal sites of shallow initial probing depth often seem to lose probing attachment following various types of periodontal therapy, including nonsurgical therapy. The susceptibility to this treatment-associated probing attachment loss may conceivably be related to gingival architecture as well as to the inflammatory status of the tissues. This study was designed to study the relationship of buccolingual gingival thickness and bleeding on probing in shallow buccal sites (less than or equal to 3.5 mm probing depth) to loss of probing attachment following nonsurgical therapy. 3 months follow

Post-treatment periodontal status of labially erupted maxillary canines.

This study evaluates the level of the gingival margin of labially erupted maxillary canines after orthodontic treatment in a sample of 47 individuals with a mean age of 14.2 years. Gingival recession was found in 33% of the canines with a high labial eruption pattern, and in 11% of those with a moderate labial eruption. A highly significant correlation was found between the clinical crown height and the original degree of high labial eruption. The evidence of this study supports the case for implementation of interceptive orthodontic treatment in order to prevent high labial eruption of maxill

Extracellular neutrophil traps in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic periodontitis, the chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontium, is caused by bacteria and is characterized by an influx of neutrophils into the gingival crevice. Recently, a 'new' extracellular neutrophil defense mechanism - neutrophil extracellular traps - has been described. However, their role in periodontitis has not yet been investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical examinations, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, as well as cytology and confocal laser-scanning microscopy, were employed to analyze gingiva biopsies and crevicular exuda
