INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by unilateral or bilateral involvement of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, resulting in a lack of facial expression and eye movements. These patients suffer a series of oral manifestations that may complicate their dental treatment, such as facial and tongue muscle weakness, uncontrolled salivation secondary to deficient lip sealing, micrognathia, microstomia, bifid uvula, gothic and fissured palate, fissured tongue, and glossoptosis. The underlying etiology remains unclear, though vascular problems during embryoge

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the efficiency of ultrasound (US) in prenatal diagnosis and prognosis of Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) of 18 cases.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 79,305 women admitted for prenatal US examinations were recruited from January 2017 to December 2020. Eighteen cases of PRS fetuses were selected form the cohort and 40 cases of isolated micrognathia were recruited randomly as control group. All the clinical and imaging results were retrospectively reviewed. General condition, US measurements, and prognosis of fetuses were compared between groups.
RESULTS: Cleft pala

Four infants with Down syndrome developed cor pulmonale and heart failure in association with chronic upper airway obstruction. Features of the sleep apnea syndrome were conspicuous; namely, noisy breathing with retraction, cyanosis and frequent apnea during sleep, and daytime lethargy and somnolence. The clinical picture masqueraded as cyanotic congenital heart disease. Arterial blood gas analyses revealed alveolar hypoventilation, especially during sleep. The nature of the obstructive element was variable. Adenoidectomy provided partial relief in one patient, and tonsillectomy and adenoidect

There is currently a lack of scientific bibliometric analyses in the field of Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). Pierre Robin sequence is known for its clinical triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, airway obstruction, and possible secondary cleft palate. These defects can lead to upper airway obstruction, sleep apnea, feeding difficulties, affect an individual's growth and development, education level, and in severe cases can be life-threatening. Through analysis of literature retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database using Results Analysis and Citation Report and Citespace

A female infant, aged 11 days, was admitted due to dyspnea for 11 days after birth, with the main clinical manifestations of inspiratory dyspnea, feeding difficulties, and unusual facies (micrognathia, high palatal arch, cleft palate, glossoptosis, and oblique mouth to the right), and the preliminary diagnosis was Pierre-Robin syndrome. There was no marked improvement after treatment such as ventilator-assisted ventilation, nutrition, and surgical ligation of patent ductus arteriosus. Whole-exome sequencing of the family showed a heterozygous mutation of c.3082A>G (p.Ile1028 Val) in the CHD7 g

Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is defined by a constellation of characteristics including micrognathia, glossoptosis and airway obstruction. PRS can occur in isolation or can be associated with syndromes and another anomalies. Airway obstruction and feeding difficulties are the major presenting issues, and the severity of the condition ranges from mild, with minimal to no symptoms, to severe, with overt obstruction resulting in apnoeas, severe respiratory distress and cyanosis. The presence of airway obstruction can result in obstructive sleep apnoea and abnormalities in gas exchange, as well as

The clinical triad of micrognathia (small mandible), glossoptosis (backward, downward displacement of the tongue), and airway obstruction defines the Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). Airway obstruction and respiratory distress are clinical hallmarks. Patients may present with stridor, retractions, and cyanosis. Severe obstruction results in feeding difficulty, reflux, and failure to thrive. Treatment options depend on the severity of airway obstruction and include prone positioning, nasopharyngeal airways, tongue lip adhesion, mandibular distraction osteogenesis, and tracheostomy. The neonate and

Pierre Robin sequence is characterized by micro-gnathia, glossoptosis, feeding difficulties, and upper respiratory obstruction, which are frequently complicated by bronchial aspiration and pulmonary infection. Gastroesophageal reflux is also common in these patients. To assess the results of mandibular distraction, a study was performed in 18 patients to detect swallowing disorders associated with apnea episodes and gastroesophageal reflux. Polysomnography, barium pharyngoscopy, determination of blood gases, and esophageal pH measurements were undertaken before and 4 months after distraction o

BACKGROUND: Pierre-Robin syndrome (PRS) is a disorder characterized by mandibular hypoplasia, leading to upper airway obstruction and feeding difficulties due to backward displacement of the tongue (glossoptosis). Cervical diastematomyelia is another rare congenital condition in which the spinal cord splits into two hemicords at the level of the cervical spine.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a unique case of a 6-month-old boy who has cervical diastematomyelia and PRS. At birth, our patient had mandibular hypoplasia, respiratory distress, a posterior parietal region swelling, and reduced tone in

Pierre-Robin sequence (PRS) patients frequently exhibit symptoms of airway obstruction due to multiple etiologies, predominantly from glossoptosis and tongue base obstruction. Rarely, these patients can have palatal mass and even rarer is one of neural origin. To date, there are few reports of heterotopic neural tissue causing airway obstruction in literature, and there are only two reports related to PRS. The objective of this report is to detail a PRS patient with obstructive airway symptoms that resolved after removal of a right-sided soft palatal mass containing heterotopic neural tissue.

The Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS), consisting of cleft palate, glossoptosis and micrognathia, is a common human birth defect. However, how this abnormality occurs remains largely unknown. Here we report that neural crest cell (NCC)-specific knockout of transferrin receptor (Tfrc), a well known transferrin transporter protein, caused micrognathia, cleft palate, severe respiratory distress and inability to suckle in mice, which highly resemble human PRS. Histological and anatomical analysis revealed that the cleft palate is due to the failure of palatal shelves elevation that resulted from a retar

Micrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate comprise one of the most common malformation sequences, Robin sequence. It is a component of the TARP syndrome, talipes equinovarus, atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and persistent left superior vena cava. This disorder is X-linked and severe, with apparently 100% pre- or postnatal lethality in affected males. Here we characterize a second family with TARP syndrome, confirm linkage to Xp11.23-q13.3, perform massively parallel sequencing of X chromosome exons, filter the results via a number of criteria including the linkage region, use a unique

Pierre Robin sequence is defined by a triplet of clinical signs in newborns: micrognathia, glossoptosis and tongue-based airway obstruction often accompanied by U-shaped cleft palate. The reported incidence is ranging from 1 to 8.500 to 30.000 newborns. Therapeutic management of Pierre Robin sequence is based on the degree of the airway obstruction. A priori management of such cases can be extremely challenging due to the phenotypic plethora of Pierre Robin Sequence. A ten-day male newborn diagnosed with Pierre Robin was referred to our department for investigation and management of severe air

The triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and resultant airway obstruction is known as Robin sequence (RS). Although RS is a well-recognized clinical entity, there is wide variability in the diagnosis and care of children born with RS. Systematic evaluations of treatments and clinical outcomes for children with RS are lacking despite the advances in clinical care over the past 20 years. We explore the pathogenesis, developmental and genetic models, morphology, and syndromes and malformations associated with RS. Current classification systems for RS do not account for the heterogeneity among inf

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate speech outcome and need of a pharyngeal flap in children born with nonsyndromic Pierre Robin Sequence (nsPRS) vs syndromic Pierre Robin Sequence (sPRS).
METHODS: Pierre Robin Sequence was diagnosed when the triad microretrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate were present. Children were classified at birth in 3 categories depending on respiratory and feeding problems. The Borel-Maisonny classification was used to score the velopharyngeal insufficiency.
RESULTS: The study was based on 38 children followed from 1985 to 2006. Fo

PURPOSE: Newborns with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) and syndromic micrognathia show microgenia and glossoptosis, which cause reduction of the airway and breathing difficulty from birth. Our goal is to analyze quantitative and qualitative volumetric changes before and after fast and early mandibular osteodistraction (FEMOD) and to compare radiological data.
METHODS: The sample was composed of 4 patients, who satisfied inclusion criteria for completeness of data. Computed tomography pre- and post-operation were performed, then a volumetric assessment was made with Dolphin Imaging. Polysomnograph

Forty-one of 95 Finnish patients (43%) with diastrophic dysplasia had open cleft palate (CP). Submucous CP or its microforms were observed in an additional 30 patients (32%). Even though most of the patients have micrognathia, the high frequency of submucous clefts speaks against the role of the interposed tongue in the pathogenesis of CP in the Pierre Robin sequence. There was no hypernasality of speech in 27 of the 30 patients with submucous CP or its microforms, and the spontaneous speech of the other three was good. This is in contrast with observations in isolated submucous CP in general.

Robin sequence is characterized by mandibular retrognathia, airway obstruction, and glossoptosis; 80%-90% also have a cleft palate. Various treatment approaches exist, and although controlled studies are rare, objective assessment of treatment outcomes that address the leading clinical issues, namely obstructive sleep apnea and failure to thrive, are essential. Sleep-disordered breathing may be detected using cardiorespiratory polygraphy or polysomnography. Pulse oximetry alone may miss infants with frequent obstructive apneas, yet no intermittent hypoxia. Among conservative treatment options,
