Prepubertal subchronic exposure to soy milk and glyphosate leads to endocrine disruption.

Lactose intolerance is characterized by low or inexistent levels of lactase, and the main treatment consists of dietary changes, especially replacing dairy milk by soy milk. Soy contains phytoestrogens, substances with known estrogenic activity, besides, glyphosate-based herbicides are extensively used in soy crops, being frequently a residue in soy beans, bringing to a concern regarding the consumption of soy-based products, especially for children in breastfeeding period with lactose intolerance. This study evaluated the pubertal toxicity of a soy milk rich feeding (supplemented or not with

Pathological and toxicological findings in glyphosate-surfactant herbicide fatality: a case report.

Glyphosate herbicide is promoted by the manufacturer as having no risks to human health, with acute toxicity being very low in normal use. In Thailand, however, poisoning from glyphosate agricultural herbicides has been increasing. A case of rapid lethal intoxication from glyphosate-surfactant herbicide involved a 37-year-old woman, who deliberately ingested approximately 500 mL of concentrated Roundup formulation (41% glyphosate as the isopropylamine salt and 15% polyoxyethylene amine; Mosanto Company). The postmortem examination revealed that the stomach contained 550 mL of yellow fluid. The

Acute poisoning with a glyphosate-surfactant herbicide ('Roundup'): a review of 93 cases.

Between 1 January 1980, and 30 September 1989, 93 cases of exposure to herbicides containing glyphosphate and surfactant ('Roundup') were treated at Changhua Christian Hospital. The average amount of the 41% solution of glyphosate herbicide ingested by non-survivors was 184 +/- 70 ml (range 85-200 ml), but much larger amounts (500 ml) were reported to have been ingested by some patients and only resulted in mild to moderate symptomatology. Accidental exposure was asymptomatic after dermal contact with spray (six cases), while mild oral discomfort occurred after accidental ingestion (13 cases).

Chronic glyphosate exposure compromises male reproductive health: Golgi dysfunction mediating spermatogenesis impairment.

Growing evidence links global male infertility to environmental endocrine disruptors, particularly pesticides. As the world's most extensively used herbicide, glyphosate (GLY) poses significant concerns for human reproductive health. While epidemiological studies suggest associations between GLY exposure and male infertility, conclusive evidence elucidating its reproductive toxicity remains limited and controversial. Thus, this study established an 18-week rat model of chronic GLY exposure to investigate its impact on male reproductive health. Data demonstrated that chronic dietary exposure to

Glyphosate-based herbicide worsens alterations induced by cafeteria diet on rat uterus.

Exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) and consumption of cafeteria (CAF) diet, which are widespread in Western society, seem to be associated with endometrial hyperplasia (EH). Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a subchronic low dose of GBH added to the CAF diet on the rat uterus. Female Wistar rats were fed from postnatal day (PND)21 until PND240 with chow (control) or CAF diet. Since PND140, rats also received GBH (2 mg of glyphosate/kg/day) or water through food, yielding four experimental groups: control, CAF, GBH, and CAF+GBH. On PND240, CAF and CAF+GBH animals showed an in

Single-cell transcriptome analysis reveals liver injury induced by glyphosate in mice.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate (GLY), as the active ingredient of the most widely used herbicide worldwide, is commonly detected in the environment and living organisms, including humans. Its toxicity and carcinogenicity in mammals remain controversial. Several studies have demonstrated the hepatotoxicity of GLY; however, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are still largely unknown. METHODS: Using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), immunofluorescent staining, and in vivo animal studies, we analyzed the liver tissues from untreated and GLY-treated mice. RESULTS: We generated the fi

Fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer particles for glyphosate detection using phase transfer agents.

In this work, molecular imprinting was combined with direct fluorescence detection of the pesticide Glyphosate (GPS). Firstly, the solubility of highly polar GPS in organic solvents was improved by using lipophilic tetrabutylammonium (TBA+) and tetrahexylammonium (THA+) counterions. Secondly, to achieve fluorescence detection, a fluorescent crosslinker containing urea-binding motifs was used as a probe for GPS-TBA and GPS-THA salts in chloroform, generating stable complexes through hydrogen bond formation. The GPS/fluorescent dye complexes were imprinted into 2-3 nm fluorescent molecularly imp

Glyphosate-triggered hepatocyte ferroptosis via suppressing Nrf2/GSH/GPX4 axis exacerbates hepatotoxicity.

Glyphosate (GLY) exposure has been reported to damage organs in animals, in particular the liver, due to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ferroptosis is defined as a new type of cell death that is characterized by the increase of ROS. The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether the relationship between ferroptosis and GLY-induced hepatotoxicity is of significance to enlarge the knowledge about GLY toxicity and consequences for human and animal health. To this end, in this study, we investigated the role of ferroptosis in GLY-induced hepatotoxicity both in vivo and in vitro. The

Glyphosate induces benign monoclonal gammopathy and promotes multiple myeloma progression in mice.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the USA and worldwide. There has been considerable debate about its carcinogenicity. Epidemiological studies suggest that multiple myeloma (MM) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have a positive and statistically significant association with glyphosate exposure. As a B cell genome mutator, activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is a key pathogenic player in both MM and B cell NHL. METHODS: Vk*MYC is a mouse line with sporadic MYC activation in germinal center B cells and considered as the best available MM animal model. We treated V

Glyphosate reduces urediniospore development and Puccinia psidii disease severity on Eucalyptus grandis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown the effects of glyphosate drift on decreasing rust intensity on Eucalyptus grandis plants. However, the effects of the herbicide on Puccinia psidii initial development are unknown. In this study the systemic action of glyphosate on rust severity was evaluated on Eucalyptus plants maintained under greenhouse conditions. Urediniospore germination and apressorium formation on detached leaves and on water agar medium, previously treated with glyphosate, were also evaluated. RESULTS: Rust severity and the number of urediniospores per leaf area were significant

Clinical impact of upper gastrointestinal tract injuries in glyphosate-surfactant oral intoxication.

Fifty patients with glyphosate-surfactant oral ingestion were studied with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopic grading using Zargar's modified grading system for mucosal corrosive injury. Esophageal injury was seen in 68% of the patients, gastric injury in 72%, and duodenal injury in 16%. There were no grade 3 injuries. The upper gastrointestinal tract injuries caused by glyphosate-surfactant were minor in comparison with those by other strong acids. The WBC count, amount of glyphosate-surfactant ingested, length of hospital stay and the occurrence of serious complications increased marked

The surfactant co-formulant POEA in the glyphosate-based herbicide RangerPro but not glyphosate alone causes necrosis in Caco-2 and HepG2 human cell lines and ER stress in the ToxTracker assay.

The toxicity of co-formulants present in glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) has been widely discussed leading to the European Union banning the polyoxyethylene tallow amine (POEA). We identified the most commonly used POEA, known as POE-15 tallow amine (POE-15), in the widely used US GBH RangerPro. Cytotoxicity assays using human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 and hepatocyte HepG2 cell lines showed that RangerPro and POE-15 are far more cytotoxic than glyphosate alone. RangerPro and POE-15 but not glyphosate caused cell necrosis in both cell lines, and that glyphosate and RangerPro but not POE-1

Monitoring Environmental Glyphosate in Northeastern Romania and Its Cytotoxic Impact on Human Fibroblasts.

Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide globally, raising concerns about its environmental persistence and biological impacts. Therefore, monitoring pesticide use is essential for assessing agricultural practices and the risks to human health associated with chemical use. This research examined glyphosate contamination in water (40 samples) and soil (28 samples) from northeastern Romania, an important agricultural region. Glyphosate concentrations in environmental water and soil samples were quantified using a spectrophotometric method based on ninhydrin derivatization, with good linearit

Towards ecological psychiatry: The herbicide glyphosate disrupts behavior through microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Planetary and human health including mental health are closely interrelated. Increasing evidence also points to a role for the microbiota-gut-brain axis in maintaining optimum mental health. Emerging evidence raises concerns about the unintended toxicity of environmental exposure to xenobiotics, any substance foreign to the body, on the brain and behavior. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used active ingredients for herbicides for both agricultural and domestic applications. However, investigations on the effects of glyphosate at regulatory reference dose exposures on this axis are current

Subacute oral glyphosate induces dose-dependent renal injury in male mice (Mus musculus).

Glyphosate is the most heavily applied herbicide worldwide and human exposure is now near-ubiquitous, yet its renal toxicity at near-threshold doses remains incompletely characterized. We tested whether subacute oral glyphosate produces integrated, dose-dependent renal injury in male mice (Mus musculus). Adult male mice (n = 10/group) received vehicle or technical-grade glyphosate at 10, 50 or 100 mg/kg/day by oral gavage for 28 days, with 50 mg/kg anchored near the chronic NOAEL. Serum renal-function markers, renal oxidative-stress markers (MDA, GSH, SOD, CAT) and hematoxylin-eosin histopatho

Hawthorn-leaf flavonoid alleviate intestinal health and microbial dysbiosis problems induced by glyphosate.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the herbicide (i.e., Roundup, Touchdown and Erasure), the safety of which has become a social concern. Hawthorn-leaf flavonoid (HF) possesses various biological functions, including antioxidant, regulating lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota. Whether HF could reduce the health risk of pure glyphosate to birds remain unknown. The experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of pure glyphosate (25 mg/kg added to water) on the intestinal health and microbiota of chicks and the protective roles of HF (60 mg/kg added to the diet). Exposure to glyphosate dec

Melatonin prevents glyphosate-induced hepatic lipid accumulation in roosters via activating Nrf2 pathway.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate (GLY) is a widely used herbicide with well-defined hepatotoxic effects, in which oxidative stress has been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of hepatotoxicity. Melatonin (MET), an effective free radical scavenger, has been revealed to alleviate drug-induced liver damage by inhibiting oxidative stress. METHODS: In this study, a rooster model with primary chicken embryo hepatocytes was applied to elucidate the therapeutic effects of MET against GLY-induced hepatic damage and the potential mechanism. Hepatic portal venous gas after ingesting glyphosate: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide. Clinical presentations of glyphosate intoxication show variation, but hepatic portal venous gas(HPVG) caused by glyphosate poisoning is rarely reported. Herein, we report a rare case of ominous HPVG after ingesting glyphosate. HPVG, which used to be an ominous abdominal radiologic sign, is associated with numerous underlying abdominal pathologies, ranging from benign conditions that require no invasive treatment to potentially lethal diseases that necessitate prompt surgical intervention. CASE SUMMARY: A young woman who ingested 100 mL glypho
