Experimental transmission of Pasteurella multocida 6:B in goats.

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is an acute disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by Pasteurella multocida 6:B. Outbreaks of the disease have been closely associated with carrier animals that transmit the organism to susceptible animals during stressful condition. This study was conducted to determine whether goats exposed intranasally to P. multocida 6:B can transmit the organism to contact goats. Thirty-six healthy local Katjang goats were divided into four groups and goats of groups 1 and 3 were each inoculated intranasally with a 1-ml inoculum that contained 1 x 10(9) CFU/ml of live P. mult

Some economic effects of trypanosomiasis in goats.

A study into the economic effects of trypanosomiasis was carried out using three goat breeds at the south coast of Kenya. The economic losses were worked out by comparing the performance of the goat groups receiving Samorin on a monthly basis with that of goat groups not receiving any Samorin. The losses were based on quantities of weight lost through deaths and that not produced as a result of the disease. The groups of goats were exposed to natural trypanosomal challenge. The losses in KSh per Tropical Livestock Unit within six months of the study were 198.07 for the East African goats, 501.

Global Goat! Is the Expanding Goat Population an Important Reservoir of Cryptosporidium?

Goats are a primary or additional income source for many families in resource-poor areas. Although often considered inferior to other livestock, the resilience of goats and their ability to thrive in a range of environments means that that they are of particular value. Furthermore, goats emit less methane than other livestock species. In these same areas, it is well-documented that cryptosporidiosis has a substantial impact on infant morbidity and mortality, as well as reducing child growth and development. As Cryptosporidium also causes diarrheal disease in goats, the question arises whether

Effect of experimental infection with Listeria monocytogenes on the development of pregnancy and on concentrations of progesterone, oestrone sulphate and 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha in the goat.

The effect of Listeria monocytogenes infection on hormone levels in pregnant goats was studied. Four goats (Group I) received an intravenous inoculation of a bacterial culture (Type 1) on Days 69-77 and another four goats (Group II) received a similar inoculation on Days 105-106 of gestation. Five non-inoculated goats were used as controls. Plasma was analysed for progesterone, oestrone sulphate and 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha. The status of the foetus was followed using real-time ultrasonography. Three of the four goats in Group I aborted 8-10 days after inoculation. The fourth goat gave birth

[Note on goat pox in Chad: study of the foci].

Several outbreaks of goat-pox were observed from 1985 to 1989 in different villages of the N'Djamena area. The virus strain circulating in this region seemed to be host-specific for goats since sheep kept in contact with goats did not suffer from the disease. Nevertheless, it has to be studied further on whether the virus isolated from sick goats could be pathogenic for sheep.

The Scrapie Prevalence in a Goat Herd Is Underestimated by Using a Rapid Diagnostic Test.

Current European surveillance regulations for scrapie, a naturally occurring transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) or prion disease in sheep and goats, require testing of fallen stock or healthy slaughter animals, and outline measures in the case of confirmation of disease. An outbreak of classical scrapie in a herd with 2500 goats led to the culling of the whole herd, providing the opportunity to examine a subset of goats, take samples, and examine them for the presence of disease-associated prion protein (PrPSc) to provide further information on scrapie test sensitivity, pathology, a

Abortion outbreak in pregnant goats and cows with coinfection of 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos' and HoBi-like pestivirus.

New emerging diseases, including 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos' ('Ca. M. haemobos') and HoBi-like pestivirus in central China has been a huge challenge for ruminant production. From July to September 2022, an abortion outbreak affected 14 goat farms and 11 cattle farms in this area. To investigate whether the two pathogens are associated with the disease, samples were collected: Group 1 included 55 goat blood samples with foetal tissue samples and ticks on the skin; Group 2 included nine healthy goat blood samples; Group 3 included 36 cow blood samples with foetal tissue samples and ticks on

Doctor-diagnosed health problems in a region with a high density of concentrated animal feeding operations: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in health risks of residents living near concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Previous research mostly focused on swine CAFOs and self-reported respiratory conditions. The aim was to study the association between the presence of swine, poultry, cattle and goat CAFOs and health of Dutch neighbouring residents using electronic medical records from general practitioners (GPs). METHODS: Data for the year 2009 were collected of 119,036 inhabitants of a rural region with a high density of CAFOs using information from GIAB (high exposed population). A

Histopathological and biochemical findings of congenital copper deficiency: are these similar to those of caprine arthritis-encephalitis?

This study was done after identifying animals with a twisted carpal joint in goat herd. These included a kid goat walking on its articulus carpii and a newborn goat with a stiff leg. Necropsies of the diseased goats revealed swollen carpal joints that were twisted backwards. Arthritis was observed during microscopic examination of the carpal joints. Very low levels of eosinophil, leucocyte, and lymphocyte cell infiltration were found in the central nervous system and meninges. Serum copper levels were significantly decreased in most of the animals. All of these results led us to diagnose the a

Augmented T lymphocyte responses and abnormal B lymphocyte numbers in goats chronically infected with the retrovirus causing caprine arthritis-encephalitis.

Caprine arthritis-encephalitis is a retrovirus-induced disease resulting in lymphoproliferative lesions of the CNS and joints. Peripheral blood leukocytes of chronically infected goats were analyzed for the types of cells present and for their reactivity to viral antigen and polyclonal stimulants. Two of 9 infected goats had abnormal numbers of B lymphocytes--one elevated and the other deficient. Lymphocyte reactivity to viral antigens was transiently detectable by a lymphoblastogenic assay in 5 of the 9 goats. The reactive cells were peanut agglutinin-negative T lymphocytes. Vaccination against Louping Ill Virus Protects Goats from Experimental Challenge with Spanish Goat Encephalitis Virus.

Spanish goat encephalitis virus (SGEV) is a recently described member of the genus Flavivirus belonging to the tick-borne encephalitis group of viruses, and is closely related to louping ill virus (LIV). Naturally acquired disease in goats results in severe, acute encephalitis and 100% mortality. Eighteen goats were challenged subcutaneously with SGEV; nine were vaccinated previously against LIV and nine were not. None of the vaccinated goats showed any clinical signs of disease or histological lesions, but all of the non-vaccinated goats developed pyrexia and 5/9 developed neurological clinic

Sparse PrP(Sc) accumulation in the placentas of goats with naturally acquired scrapie.

BACKGROUND: Domestic goats (Capra hircus) are a natural and experimental host of scrapie and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) of sheep and cattle. Goats are also susceptible to experimental infection with the agents of TSEs of deer and elk (chronic wasting disease) and humans (Creutzfeldt Jakob disease). Distribution of PrPSc, the abnormal prion protein, is similar in the tissues of scrapie-infected sheep and goats but no data are available on the potential shedding of the agent through the placenta, the presumed route of transmission of ovi

Experimental infection of non-immunosuppressed and immunosuppressed goats reveals differential pathogenesis of Babesia aktasi n. sp.

Babesiosis is an acute and persistent tick-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia. These hemoparasites affect vertebrates globally, resulting in symptoms such as high fever, anemia, jaundice, and even death. Advancements in molecular parasitology revealed new Babesia species/genotypes affecting sheep and goats, including Babesia aktasi n. sp., which is highly prevalent in goats from Turkiye's Mediterranean region. The objective of this study was to investigate the pathogenesis of B. aktasi infection in immunosuppressed (n=7) and non-immunosuppressed (n=6) goats. These

In-silico analysis of Pasteurella multocida to identify common epitopes between fowl, goat and buffalo.

Pasteurella multocida represents a highly diverse group of bacteria infecting various hosts like the fowl, goat and buffalo leading to huge economic loss to the poultry and cattle industry. Previous reports indicated that the outer membrane proteins contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of Pasteurella multocida. The comparative in-silico genome wide analysis of four pathogenic Pasteurella multocida strains (Anand1-poultry, Anand1-goat, PMTB and VTCCBAA264) with their respective hosts was performed. A pipeline was developed to identify the list of non-homologous proteins of Pasteurella m

LIPG-mediated regulation of lipid deposition and proliferation in goat intramuscular preadipocytes involves the PPARα signaling pathway.

Endothelial lipase (LIPG), a member of the triglyceride lipase family, plays an essential role in human diseases and lipid metabolism. However, its function in goat intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of the LIPG gene in IMF deposition by knocking down and overexpressing it in goat intramuscular preadipocytes. We successfully cloned the full-length LIPG gene, which spans 2,131 bp, including a 94 bp 5' untranslated region (5'UTR), a 1,503 bp coding sequence (CDS), and a 534 bp 3' untranslated region (3'UTR).
