Over the past decades mental health services around the world are faced with a high number of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) which has resulted in a particular emphasis on research for specialist treatments for this class of disorders. At least 5 psychotherapeutic models are based on evidence from clinical trials that support their effectiveness. In this review we present the latest research evidence as well as a summary of the basic characteristics of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy and Mentalization Based Treatment, which are not yet widely used in Greece. The two mod

PURPOSE: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are a high-risk subset of patients, whose optimal antithrombotic treatment strategy, involving a combination of anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents, has not been well defined. Our study aims to investigate contemporary "real-world" trends of antithrombotic treatment strategies in AF patients undergoing PCI, as well as identify factors affecting decision-making at hospital discharge.
METHODS: "Real-world" data were retrieved from the GReek-AntiPlatElet Atrial Fibrillation (GRAPE-AF) registry,

George Bartisch was a 16th century German ophthalmologist who published the first ophthalmology textbook in the vernacular for laymen and non-university-trained practitioners. His treatments and understanding of diseases rested firmly on Greek tradition, but he also was very involved in the superstitions of the day. This essay looks at the man and his mores. Bartisch believed that much of the suffering of patients had to do with sins they had committed, and that the devil was the active force in the world inflicting this punishment. Often, he believed, witches would carry out the devil's hexes

Evidence of herbal, animal, and chemical substances from the natural world used in medicines for otolaryngological problems, including opium, hyoscyamus, barley, honey, dried beans and peas, olives, fruits, Agaricus, castoreum, cassia, and afronitron, was traced in the Byzantine medical treatises, mainly from the 4th century AD to the 15th century AD. The texts of Antyllus, Orivasios of Pergamos, Aetios of Amida, Alexander of Tralles, Paul Aeginitis, Leon Iatrosophistis, Theophanis Nonnos, Nickolaos Myrepsos, Michael Psellos, and others strongly suggest the influence of ancient Greek and Roman

Varicocele is a common, but often overlooked, disorder. It appears in pre- and para-pubertal boys as well as adults. Between 1954 and 1982 23 boys with varicocele were referred to Alder Hey Children's Hospital. This small number (less than a patient a year) does not represent the true incidence of varicocele in the community as is evident from a review of the world literature. The reasons for this infrequent referral rate are discussed and a plan for treatment is proposed. The word Varicocele is derived from the latin 'varix' which means dilated vein and the Greek 'kele' meaning a tumour or sw

'Thinking with Homer', or drawing creatively on themes and scenes from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, can help us to better understand medical culture and practice. One current, pressing, issue is the role of the whistleblower, who recognises and exposes perceived poor practice or ethical transgressions that compromise patient care and safety. Once, whistleblowers were ostracised where medical culture closed ranks. However, in a new era of public accountability, medicine looks to formally embrace whistleblowing to the point that not reporting transgressions can now constitute a transgression of pr

A case is described of subcutaneous dirofilariasis in a Greek woman who had visited many countries around the world, including areas of sub-Saharan Africa. The patient presented with a single hard subcutaneous nodule on the right cheek, with no cutaneous manifestations of early or long-standing onchocercal dermatitis or eye lesions. The nodule was removed surgically and the filarial adult worm Onchocerca volvulus was initially diagnosed, based on the history, the hardness and large size of the fibrous nodule and the absence of cuticular longitudinal ridges of the parasite in the initial histol

The goal of this study was to describe the therapeutic methods and surgical techniques used during Byzantine times (AD 324-1453) for a disease that has occupied physicians since antiquity: nasal polyps. The original Greek-language texts of the Byzantine medical writers, most of which were published after the 17th century, were studied in order to identify the early knowledge of the definition, symptoms, conservative treatments, and surgical intervention in cases of this disease. A considerable number of conservative treatments, etiologic and local (with inunctions or blowing of caustic substan

The history of respiratory mechanics is reviewed over a period of some 2,500 years from the ancient Greeks to World War II. A cardinal early figure was Galen (130-199 AD) who made remarkably perceptive statements on the diaphragm and the anatomy of the phrenic nerves. The polymath Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) contributed observations on pulmonary mechanics including the pleural space and bronchial airflow that still make good reading. Vesalius (1514-1564) produced magnificent illustrations of the lung, ribcage, and diaphragm. In the 17th century, the Oxford School including Boyle, Hooke, Lowe

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based combinations as first-line therapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) has created an unmet need for effective treatment options at disease progression. Cabozantinib is recommended after ICI failure; however, real-world evidence regarding its efficacy and safety in this setting remains limited, particularly following contemporary ICI-containing regimens.
METHODS: CARE was a retrospective, multicenter, non-interventional study conducted in Greece. Patients with locally advanced or metastatic RCC who received caboz

This second part of the study on ancient dental care explores dental practices in ancient Egypt and the Graeco-Roman world, drawing on both textual and archaeological evidence to shed new light on dental care and early dentistry. The arid climate and distinctive burial customs of ancient Egypt have resulted in the exceptional preservation of numerous skeletal and mummified remains, allowing researchers to study the full spectrum of dental conditions across three millennia. While a few texts reference medicaments for dental care, there is scant osteological evidence for interventive dental proc

Cancer is one of the main causes of death and a major obstacle to increasing life expectancy in all countries of the world. Lymph node metastasis (LNM) of in cancer patients indicates poor prognosis and it is an important indication to determine the therapeutic regime. Therefore, more attention should be given to the molecular mechanics of tumor lymphangiogenesis and LNM. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale cargo-bearing membrane vesicles that can serve as key mediators for the intercellular communication. Like Hermes, the messenger of the Greek gods, EVs can be secreted by tumor cells

There are many population-specific studies around the world on sex estimation from skeletal remains. Of the long bones, the tibia has been an important one because it is commonly studied to assess population specificity of a long bone. However, the studies in Europe that use this bone for sex estimation remain limited. The aim of this study is to analyse the tibia in different populations of the southern Europe such as Greece, Italy, and Spain providing standards for sex estimation in a forensic context. In total, we analyzed tibiae of 157 Greek, 190 Italian, and 105 Spanish individuals. Stand

Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amoebiasis, a potentially fatal diarrhoeal disease in the developing world. The parasite was named "histolytica" for its ability to destroy host tissues, which is probably driven by direct killing of human cells. The mechanism of human cell killing has been unclear, although the accepted model was that the parasites use secreted toxic effectors to kill cells before ingestion. Here we report the discovery that amoebae kill by ingesting distinct pieces of living human cells, resulting in intracellular calcium elevation and eventual cell death. Afte

Cervical cancer is a major cause of death in the developing world. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is a screening test that detects abnormal cells before they advance to cancer. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of cervical cancer screening among Greek students. A sample of 472 female students participated in the present study. Interviews were performed using a structured questionnaire. Of the participants, 94.07% were aware of the Pap test and 67.34% reported that the Pap test should be done yearly. The majority of them were informed about cervical c

Tehran after the Second World War experienced a modernization drive and rapid population growth. In 1972, the Greek planner, Constantinos Doxiadis, who had already undertaken major housing and planning projects in Iran, was invited to prepare an action plan for the city, to guide the future investment for easing the city's problems. Doxiadis saw cities as nightmares, but advocated that a holistic scientific analysis and a naturalist approach to urban growth management could address their problems. In applying his ideas to Tehran, however, the limits of his ideas of scientific planning became e

Spontaneous spleen rupture is a rare complication of infectious diseases and it can become a potentially life-threatening condition if not diagnosed in time. A 17-year-old Greek female presented to the ER due to acute abdominal pain, mainly of the left upper quadrant. She had no recent report of trauma. The patient was pale, her blood pressure was 90/70 mmHg, and her pulse was 120 b/min. Clinical examination of the abdomen revealed muscle contraction and resistance. The patient was submitted to an ultrasound of the upper abdomen and to a CT scanning of the abdomen that revealed an extended int

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L.) (Asteraceae) is a medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of fevers, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach aches, toothaches, insect bites, infertility, and problems with menstruation and labor during childbirth. The feverfew herb has a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine, especially among Greek and early European herbalists. Feverfew has also been used for psoriasis, allergies, asthma, tinnitus, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. The plant contains a large number of natural products, but the active principles probably

Already more than two thousands years ago the Greek physician Hippocrates (V-IV century B.C.) used the extracts of the willow bark to fight fever. At the end of the eighteen hundreds the German chemist Felix Hoffmann obtained acetylsalicylic acid in stable and pure form, and from then on Aspirin (where A is the abbreviation of acetyl and Spir stands for Spirsaure, the German name of salicylic acid) has had enormous diffusion. In 1953 Lawrence Craven reported that he had successfully prescribed aspirin to hundreds of adult male patients for the non-specific prophylaxis of coronary thrombosis. A
