Loss Orientation and Grief Following AI-Companion Shutdown.

This study examined whether grief after an AI-companion shutdown is associated with what users describe as lost. Fifty-seven accounts collected after the shutdown of the Soulmate AI application were independently coded by two raters for grief intensity and dominant loss orientation, and each coding was analysed separately. Accounts framing the loss as that of a person showed greater grief than those framing it as the loss of an idea, a service, data, or platform access: medians were 4 versus 2 (rank-biserial r = .80 and .82). A finer three-category comparison could be tested only in the first

Grief experiences among LGBTQ+ populations: a scoping review.

CONTEXT: LGBTQ+ individuals face grieving processes complicated by minority stress, structural discrimination, and fears related to disclosure of their sexual orientation or gender identity, which leads to disenfranchised grief within healthcare systems that remain heteronormative. Recent literature on palliative care highlights inequities in access, a lack of recognition of chosen families, and gaps in professionals' LGBTQ+ cultural competence. OBJECTIVE: To explore research published between 2021 and 2026 on grief and bereavement-related experiences among LGBTQ+ adults in healthcare and pal

Dynamic networks of prolonged grief symptoms in daily life.

BACKGROUND: According to network theories, mental disorders, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), comprise networks of dynamically connected symptoms. Examining how prolonged grief symptoms are connected over time could reveal the patterns driving their persistence. This study provides the first empirical investigation of prolonged grief symptom networks using self-reported data on prolonged grief assessed multiple times daily. METHODS: Adults whose partner, family member, or friend died on average 30 months ago (N = 229, 80 % women, Mage = 51) rated prolonged grief symptom intensity usi

Caregivers in anorexia nervosa: is grief underlying parental burden?

ABSTARCT: PURPOSE: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe chronic disorder and parents' experience of caregiving is usually marked by emotional distress and burden. Severe chronic psychiatric disorders are known to be linked with the concept of grief. Grief has not been investigated in AN. The aim of this study was to explore parents' and adolescents' characteristics that may be related to parental burden and grief in AN, and the link between these two dimensions. METHODS: Eighty mothers, 55 fathers and their adolescents (N  =  84) hospitalized for AN participated in this study. Evaluations of cli

The grief evaluation measure (GEM): an initial validation study.

This article describes the development of the Grief Evaluation Measure (GEM), a new instrument designed to screen for the development of a complicated mourning response in a bereaved adult. The GEM provides a quantitative and qualitative assessment of risk factors, including the mourner's loss and medical history, coping resources before and after the death, and circumstances surrounding the death. It is designed to provide an in-depth evaluation of the bereaved adult's subjective grief experience and associated symptoms. Reliability and validity studies were conducted with two samples of bere

Interpersonal predictors of group therapy outcome for complicated grief.

This study investigated three aspects of patients' interpersonal functioning as predictors of outcome for two forms of group psychotherapy for complicated grief. Patients presented with a variety of death losses and met criteria for complicated grief. The three aspects of interpersonal functioning were the patient's (1) attachment to the lost person, (2) quality of object relations (QOR), and (3) level of recent social role functioning. A more secure attachment to the lost person and better social role functioning were associated with more favorable outcome in both forms of therapy. In additio

[Psychotherapy of depressed elderly patients with pathologic grief reaction].

Loss events not sufficiently worked through frequently are the core syndrome of depressive illness in the elderly. The frequency and symptom pattern of pathological grief reactions as well as influencing factors in 155 patients 60 year old or older treated for endogenous, neurotic and reactive depression, are described. Special issues of the psychodynamics of pathological grief reactions in the elderly are discussed; problems of counter-transference are pointed out. The developmental potential in the elderly often is underestimated. Psychotherapy of pathological grief reactions in the elderly

Pathologic grief and its relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

The authors defined explicit criteria for the diagnosis of pathologic grief, and used the criteria to examine the relationship between pathologic grief and two disorders: major depression and anxiety disorders (panic and generalized anxiety), in a sample of 25 bereaved persons. Sixty-four percent of the sample met the criteria for pathologic grief. Pathologic grief was only significantly associated with major depressive disorder. It was also associated with high scores on dimensional measures of anxiety and depression. The most frequent complication of bereavement appeared to be an anxious sub

Clinical relevance of grief and mourning among Cambodian refugees.

From 1975 to 1979, one to two million Cambodians were executed or died of disease and starvation during the rule of the Pol Pot government. In the aftermath of that catastrophe, many survivors have developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. There is some evidence that the intrusive symptoms of this disorder, such as nightmares, sleep disorders, and startle reactions, can be treated with medication. But other psychosocial problems that are similar to those found in chronic grief, such as avoidance behavior, shame, and decreased involvement with other individuals, are more resistive t

Grief as a neuroendocrine transition: Insights from perinatal loss.

Grief is an all-encompassing human experience that reverberates across mind, brain, and body. Historically, the scientific study of grief has been rooted primarily in psychological frameworks. Pioneering work has begun to elucidate how attachment loss is encoded not only psychologically but also biologically, and this may be particularly significant during the perinatal period.

Ecological Validity of Grief Rumination Measures Among Bereaved People.

Grief rumination, characterised by repetitive thinking about the loss and its causes and consequences, is linked to various psychopathological symptoms, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Traditional assessments of grief rumination rely on trait self-report questionnaires assessing multiple types of rumination (e.g., reactions, injustice, counterfactuals and meaning), which may be susceptible to memory biases and often fail to capture the dynamic and context-dependent nature of ruminative thoughts. This brief report evaluates the ecological validity of trait versus state grief ruminatio

Beyond grief: Quantifying bereavement needs of rural family caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers (FCGs) may experience numerous psychosocial and practical challenges with interpersonal relationships, mental health, and finances both before and after their care recipient (CR) dies. The specific challenges affecting rural FCGs who often have limited access to palliative care services, transitional care, and other community resources are not well understood. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the challenges rural FCGs experienced immediately before the death of a CR and continuing into the bereavement period. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a r
