Imported zoonotic Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Ancylostoma braziliense infections in a cat in Romania.

Hookworms are widespread zoonotic parasites affecting humans and companion animals worldwide. We report molecular characterization of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. braziliense in a cat imported into Romania from Guadeloupe, an overseas administrative region of the French Republic in the Caribbean. This finding underscores the role of molecular diagnostics in detecting the transboundary introduction of exotic hookworms with significant zoonotic potential.

Neurological manifestations of Behçet's disease in a Caribbean population: clinical and imaging findings.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic relapsing multisystem disorder. While most frequently occurring around the Mediterranean and in Japan, isolated cases of BD have been reported in Africa south of the Sahara and in the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to describe our experience of BD in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) where the presence of the disease has not been reported previously. We analysed retrospectively the charts, and clinical and imaging features of patients native to Guadeloupe who were diagnosed with neurological manifestations of BD between 1989 and 1999. In our series of 13

Phylogeography and genetic divergence of some lymnaeid snails, intermediate hosts of human and animal fascioliasis with special reference to lymnaeids from the Bolivian Altiplano.

A population genetic study using starch gel electrophoresis was performed on populations of several species of lymnaeid snails acting as intermediate hosts for Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda, Plathyhelminth). Lymnaea viatrix was collected in 16 sites from the Bolivian Northern Altiplano. L. cubensis were obtained in one site from Venezuela, one site from Guadeloupe, three sites from Cuba and one site from the Dominican Republic. L. truncatula were collected in one site from France, one from Portugal and one from Morocco. Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MEE) were determined for 282 snails at 1

Impact of Vaccine and Immunity Passports in the Context of COVID-19: A Time Series Analysis in Overseas France.

(1) Background: By summer 2021, overseas France turned COVID-19 vaccine and immunity certificates into passports to open travel bubbles. Subsequently, its territories set French records for both COVID-19 and 6-month excess all-cause mortality. (2) Methods: Official time series were collected to compare time correlations between air traffic and COVID-19 transmission and mortality in overseas France, before and after the implementation of immunity passports. (3) Results: Air traffic initially had a reversed relationship with COVID-19, which transitioned into a leader-follower relationship with t

[Clinical hematological and biochemical pattern of three SN Baltimore hemoglobin carriers (author's transl)].

The clinical, hematologic and biochemical study of three children, carriers of the double heterozygotous SN Baltimore hemoglobin from Guadeloupe, have not allowed to detect any typical anomaly and specially no sign of anemia or hemolysis. An iron deficiency of parasitologic origin has only been detected. This absence of pathological symptoms is related to the fact that SN red cells tend to sickle less rapidly than those from persons with sickle cell trait AS.

Reactive arthritis induced by Strongyloides stercoralis.

Reactive arthritis induced by Strongyloides is exceedingly rare. A case in a 53-year-old man from the Guadeloupe (French Antilles) is reported. The outcome was rapidly favorable under thiabendazole therapy. The cycle of Strongyloides is reviewed, and the contribution of parasites to reactive arthritis in patients with genetic risk factors is discussed. Establishing the correct diagnosis is sometimes difficult but is essential in order to avoid inappropriate administration of corticosteroids that can lead to fatal, multivisceral dissemination of the parasite, particularly in patients with stron

Underestimation of Leptospirosis Incidence in the French West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis affecting mainly tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly South America and the Caribbean. As in many other countries, under-reporting of cases was suspected in the French West Indies because of inadequate access to diagnostic tests for the general population. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In order to estimate the real incidence of leptospirosis in Guadeloupe and Martinique, a study was performed in 2011 using the three prevailing available biological tests for diagnosis: Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), IgM ELISA and PC

Serovar diversity of pathogenic Leptospira circulating in the French West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is one of the most important neglected tropical bacterial diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, very little is known about the circulating etiological agents of leptospirosis in this region. In this study, we describe the serological and molecular features of leptospires isolated from 104 leptospirosis patients in Guadeloupe (n = 85) and Martinique (n = 19) and six rats captured in Guadeloupe, between 2004 and 2012. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Strains were studied by serogrouping, PFGE, MLVA, and sequencing 16SrRNA and secY. DNA extracts from blood samples

Prenatal and childhood exposure to chlordecone and sex-typed toy preference of 7-year-old Guadeloupean children.

Chlordecone was used intensively as an insecticide in the French West Indies. Because of its high persistence, the resulting contamination of food and water has led to chronic exposure of the general population as evidenced by its presence in the blood of people of Guadeloupe, in particular in pregnant women and newborns, and in maternal breast milk. Chlordecone is recognized as a reproductive and developmental toxicant, is neurotoxic and carcinogenic in rodents, and is considered as an endocrine-disrupting compound with well-established estrogenic and progestogenic properties both in vitro an

Beyond protocols: the "double burden" and ethical dilemmas of nursing home professionals facing hurricane risk.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Climate change is intensifying hurricane threats to insular territories, with nursing homes facing particular challenges in protecting vulnerable residents. Recent evidence demonstrates increased mortality and hospitalization among nursing home residents following hurricane exposure; significant gaps persist between formal planning and operational reality in long-term care facilities. To explore nursing home professionals' perceptions and practices facing hurricane risk in Guadeloupe, and identify factors influencing organizational resilience and emergency preparedne

Genetic Signatures of Contrasted Outbreak Histories of "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus", the Bacterium That Causes Citrus Huanglongbing, in Three Outermost Regions of the European Union.

In an era of trade globalization and climate change, crop pathogens and pests are a genuine threat to food security. The detailed characterization of emerging pathogen populations is a prerequisite for managing invasive species pathways and designing sustainable disease control strategies. Huanglongbing is the disease that causes the most damage to citrus, a crop that ranks #1 worldwide in terms of fruit production. Huanglongbing can be caused by three species of the phloem-limited alpha-proteobacterium, "Candidatus Liberibacter," which are transmitted by psyllids. Two of these bacteria are of

Surveillance of avian influenza in the Caribbean through the Caribbean Animal Health Network: surveillance tools and epidemiologic studies.

The Caribbean region is considered to be at risk for avian influenza (AI) due to a large backyard poultry system, an important commercial poultry production system, the presence of migratory birds, and disparities in the surveillance systems. The Caribbean Animal Health Network (CaribVET) has developed tools to implement AI surveillance in the region with the goals to have 1) a regionally harmonized surveillance protocol and specific web pages for AI surveillance on www.caribvet.net, and 2) an active and passive surveillance for AI in domestic and wild birds. A diagnostic network for the Carib

[Pseudotumoral salivary localization of Destombes-Rosai-Dorfman syndrome. Hemophagocytic histiocytosis. Diagnosed by bilateral submandibular and parotid involvement].

We report one case of pseudotumoral salivary location of the Rosai-Dorfman syndrome, with a favorable outcome, occurring in a 32-year-old man from Guadeloupe. The clinical, biological and clinicopathological features of this syndrome, as well as the pathogenetic hypotheses, are summed up. In this case, no bacterial, fungal, parasitic or viral agent was discovered. The subject presented with no immune abnormality likely to account for the persistence and intensity of the histiocytic infiltration with lymphophagocytosis associated to the lymphoplasmocytic infiltration. The rarity of ENT, and mor

[Sargassum seaweed assaults the French West Indies].

SARGASSUM SEAWEED AS SAULTS THE FRENCH WEST INDIES. Since 2011, Martinique and the islands of Guadeloupe have been affected by repeated groundings, culminating in an exceptional wave in 2018. While the sargassum ( Sargassum natans and S. fluitans ) involved in these phenomena are neither toxic nor urticating, indirect toxicity linked to the presence of microorganisms and heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, etc.) in sargassum clusters has been described. Similarly, after a 24 to 48 hours stay on the shore, sargassum algae enter a putrefaction cycle responsible to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and

Beta-globin gene cluster haplotypes and alpha-thalassemia in sickle cell disease patients from Trinidad.

In this study, we have determined the frequency of beta(S) haplotypes in 163 sickle cell disease patients from Trinidad. The alpha(3.7) globin gene deletion status was also studied with an observed gene frequency of 0.17. Among the 283 beta(S) chromosomes analyzed, the Benin haplotype was the most prevalent (61.8%) followed by Bantu (17.3%), Senegal (8.5%), Cameroon (3.5%), and Arab-Indian (3.2%), while 5.7% of them were atypical. This beta(S) haplotypes distribution differed from those previously described in other Caribbean islands (Jamaica, Guadeloupe, and Cuba), in agreement with the known

Food toxins and the Caribbean Parkinson plus types.

In the 90's, clinico pathological studies have considerably improved the diagnosis of specific and rare neurodegenerative diseases. After a training in Parkinsons' disease in Paris, the author moved to French West Indies (Guadeloupe) and observed a high incidence of atypical parkinsonism with dementia, unresponsive to levodopa. Similar features were observed in Martinique. An environmental origin has been suspected with the exposure to toxins of annonaceae leaves and seeds. The candidate toxins are acetogenins acting as mitochondrial poison. This was demonstrated in neuronal cell cultures, and
