BACKGROUND: Utilisation of enamel matrix proteins (EMD) and application of the guided tissue regeneration principle (GTR) are treatment modalities which both have been shown to result in periodontal regeneration. However, it is yet unknown whether the combination of EMD and GTR may additionally favor the regeneration process.
AIM: The aim of the present controlled study was to evaluate clinically the treatment effect of EMD, GTR, combination of EMD and GTR, and flap surgery (control) on intrabony defects.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 56 patients each of whom displaying one intrabony defect of a dep

BACKGROUND: The goal of this investigation was to histologically and histometrically evaluate the healing process of gingival recessions treated by guided tissue regeneration with bioabsorbable polylactic acid membranes (GTR group) and to compare it to that obtained with coronally positioned flaps (CPF group).
METHODS: Gingival recessions were surgically created on the buccal aspect of the upper cuspids of 5 mongrel dogs. The defects (5x7 mm) were exposed to plaque accumulation for 3 months. The contralateral defects were then randomly assigned to each group. After 3 months of healing, the do

This report describes observations of healing following guided tissue regeneration (GTR) including surgical implantation of the prostaglandin E1 analog misoprostol with calcium-layered methacrylate particles. Critical size, supra-alveolar periodontal defects were surgically created around the 3rd and 4th mandibular premolar teeth in 4 beagle dogs. Wound management included soaking with a 24 microg/ml misoprostol solution and implantation of the misoprostol/methacrylate composite. One jaw quadrant per animal was prepared for GTR using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes. The gingival fla

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of barrier membrane exposure on the success of guided tissue regeneration in Class II furcation defects. Twenty-six subjects with mandibular Class II furcation defects received initial periodontal therapy followed by guided tissue regeneration surgery. The membrane was placed and the flaps were repositioned so that the membrane was totally submerged. Membranes were removed 4 to 6 weeks later, at which time the extent of their exposure was recorded. An overall improvement in all clinical parameters was observed for all subjects 1 year

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the use of bone grafts in combination with the GTR-procedure in reinstituting periodontal support around teeth with horizontal bone loss. Orthodontic elastic bands were placed around mandibular and maxillary premolars in 3 dogs in order to induce breakdown of the periodontal tissues. When the destruction had reached a level corresponding to approximately half the root length, the elastic bands were removed and the teeth were scaled. After a period with plaque control, mucoperiosteal flaps were elevated on the buccal and lingual aspects o

The aim of the present study was to explore the possibility of achieving osseointegration of dental titanium implants, inserted into alveoli immediately after tooth extraction, by covering the recipient site with a teflon membrane. In each of 7 monkeys, mucoperiosteal flaps were raised on the buccal and palatal aspects of the maxillary molars in both sides of the jaw. The second molars were then extracted and self tapping titanium implants of the screw type (Astra Dental Implants) were inserted into the sockets of the largest roots. In the coronal portion of the sockets, a void was always pres

The loss of periodontal tissue support and vertical buccal bone loss in apico-marginal defects can often be mistaken for features indicative of vertical root fractures and this study reports thirteen cases with persistent symptomatic apical periodontitis, apico-marginal defects, and large periapical lesions that were managed with endodontic microsurgery in conjunction with bone grafts and barrier placements with a follow-up period of up to 9 years. At the recall sessions, all cases were asymptomatic with radiographical success with only 2 cases exhibiting residual apical radiolucency, but with

The present case describes the successful healing of a periapical lesion associated with the left maxillary lateral incisor (# 22, Federation Dentaire Internationale) having a type 3b dens invaginatus tooth morphology. The treatment was complicated by the presence of blunderbuss root apex and large periapical lesion (>10 mm) with through and through bone defect (Bucco palatal cortical bone perforation, Von Arx Type 1b). An adolescent boy reported palatal swelling and pus discharge in relation to tooth #22. A thorough clinical and radiographic examination revealed tooth #22 as having a type 3b

BACKGROUND: Guided tissue regeneration-based root coverage has emerged as a promising treatment modality in the treatment of gingival recession. A variety of nonresorbable and bioresorbable membranes have been successfully used. Among resorbable membranes, collagen has been extensively studied. Recently, a third generation barrier membrane derived from placenta has been introduced for periodontal regeneration.
AIM: The objective of the present study is to clinically compare the efficacy of placental membrane (Amnion) and collagen membrane (Healiguide) for the treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: Surface topography and porosity of barrier membranes is suggested to impact the soft and hard tissue response. In this study, the specific soft and hard tissue response characteristics of a synthetic polylactide membrane are evaluated including soft tissue inflammation, osteogenesis, and osteopromotion.
METHODS: Analysis of porosity and surface topography of the test material was performed by scanning electron microscopy. Transosseous parietal defects were surgically created bilaterally in 32 BalbC/ByJ mice and treated either with the barrier (test) or sham-operated (control). Hea

Six patients with buccal gingival recession (4 to 6 mm) were treated by means of the guided tissue regeneration technique utilizing a polyglycolactic membrane (Vicryl). Three months following the first surgical procedure, all sites were reentered to evaluate newly formed tissue above the exposed root. Complete root coverage was obtained in four out of six patients; 0.5 and 1.5 mm of recession were still present in the remaining two.

The purpose of the present study was to compare two different surgical procedures, connective tissue graft and guided bone regeneration, when applied in conjunction with implant placement. Probing pocket depth and the recession depth were recorded at the implant site after crown placement (T₁) and at the 1-year follow-up (T₂), while the keratinized tissue height and the buccal mucosa thickness were recorded at three different time points: at the time of implant surgery (T₀), after crown placement, and at the 1-year follow-up. No statistically significant differences in peri-implant mucosa thic

This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial compared the clinical outcomes for a polylactic acid barrier versus a collagen membrane in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Thirty patients with chronic periodontitis and at least one intrabony defect of a minimum 4 mm were enrolled. Following full-mouth scaling, GTR using a collagen membrane or a polylactic acid barrier was performed at one site in each patient. At 1 week before and 6 months after surgery, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), marginal tissue recession, and bone fill were assessed
