BACKGROUND: In gymnastics, where repetitive loading, sudden movements, and high-effort techniques are common, the use of adjustable elastic bands, tailored to individual differences, can safely support children's motor development. Therefore, in our study, we examined the effects of elastic resistance band (ERB) exercises on motor children in gymnasts aged 8-12 years.
METHODS: The study group consisted of girl children who had been actively practicing gymnastics for 3 years. A quantitative pre- and post-test control group experimental design, a type of experimental study, was used in the stud

Due to long-term repetitive training of specific techniques, competitive vaulting gymnasts are prone to develop lower limb functional asymmetry. The symptom of lower limb functional asymmetry can seriously impair vaulting performance and is a major contributing factor to sports-related injuries. This study aimed to analyze the effect of key factors, including functional asymmetry in explosive power and balance ability among elite junior female vaulters, on run-up velocity and jumping ground reaction force. We conducted a series of assessments on twenty elite junior female vault specialists usi

CASE: A 23-year-old elite-level gymnast presented with insidious-onset pain near the base of the second metacarpal. The patient was found to have a trapezoid stress fracture and was treated nonoperatively in a thumb spica cast for 4 weeks. He resumed gymnastics without limitations 8 weeks from the time of diagnosis.
CONCLUSION: Trapezoid stress fractures must be considered when evaluating patients presenting with pain about the base of the index finger metacarpal, particularly those who perform activities that repetitively place high loads across the wrist. Wrist immobilization and a supervis

An eleven-year-old male gymnast felt right wrist pain when performing handstands on the floor without any major traumas. Displaced scaphoid fracture was observed on the anteroposterior view of the radiograph. Both on the T1-weighted image from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and on the short TI inversion recovery (STIR) image from MRI, low intensity was detected at the middle of the ossification center of the scaphoid and the physis and the articular cartilage covering the scaphoid bone were preserved without any injury. The patient was diagnosed with stress fracture of the ossification cente

This article describes a novel setting for a rare nontraumatic spinal cord injury referred to as Surfer's myelopathy. The patient is a 16 year-old female cheerleader who presented following a gymnastics practice where she was repeatedly performing back handsprings. She demonstrated progressively worsening midthoracic back pain and evolving paraplegia and hypesthesia of the lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging findings were consistent with T5-T7 spinal cord ischemia at 8 h and 16 h after symptom onset. The clinical and radiologic findings for this patient are consistent with previous c

The purpose of the present study was to investigate competitive anxiety during balance beam performance in gymnasts. Competitive anxiety was assessed continuously by heart rate monitoring and by retrospective self-report of nervousness in eight female national level gymnasts during their balance beam routine during one competition and two training sessions. A significant negative correlation was found between the score of the retrospective self-report of nervousness and performance during the routine. There were no significant differences in performance score by the judges between the three te

This study was to determine estimates of the stiffness and damping properties of the wrist, and shoulder in children by examining wrist impacts on the outstretched hand in selected gymnastic activities. The influence of age, mass, and wrist and torso impact velocity on the stiffness and damping properties were also examined. Fourteen young gymnasts (ages 8 to 15 yrs) were videotaped while performing back-handspring trials or dive-rolls. Kinematic and ground reaction analysis provided input for computer simulation of the body as a rheological model with appropriate stiffness and damping. A sign

Leptin, the product of the ob-gene, is specifically released by adipocytes. In addition to its metabolic function it seems to affect the feedback-mechanisms of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal-axis. We studied 13 female juvenile elite gymnasts with anorexia athletica (AA) and 9 female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) regarding the relation between leptin, fat stores, and the reproductive hormone levels. Leptin levels in females with anorexia nervosa (Tanner stage B4 [median]; mean age: 17.8 +/- 1.7 years) were low (2.9 +/- 2.7 microg/L), and were related to body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.71

Wrist pain is a common complaint in gymnasts. Repetitive stress on the distal radial physis may lead to either gradual slipping of the epiphysis or growth disturbances. In some cases growth disturbances of the distal radial physis lead to triangulation of the distal radius and secondary ulnar overgrowth, and eventually a Madelung-like deformity. The present case report is the first to describe the outcome of epiphysiodesis of the distal radial and ulnar growth plates in a skeletally immature gymnast as a surgical treatment to prevent Madelung's deformity.

PURPOSE: To investigate the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging appearance of a chronically stressed wrist and to assess the utility of MR imaging for evaluation of injuries to the growth plate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Coronal T1-weighted spin-echo and gradient-echo MR images were obtained of 93 wrists in 47 high-risk gymnasts of a Chinese opera school. MR imaging and radiographic findings were correlated in 93 wrists.
RESULTS: The major MR imaging abnormalities of 47 radii with abnormal radiographic findings were horizontal fractures (n = 23), physeal cartilage extension to metaphysis (n = 17),

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on 35 young competitive gymnasts and 10 control subjects in order to detect the number of degenerated discs and other lumbar spinal disorders. Lumbar radiographs were obtained from all gymnasts who showed evidence of disc abnormality on MRI. Eleven gymnasts had suffered from episodes of low back pain during exercises and eight were found to have evidence of back trauma. Only 3 of the 35 gymnasts had MRI evidence of degenerated discs associated with Scheuermann's manifestations and spondylolysis. Lumbar radiographs confirmed the diagnosis in these

OBJECTIVES: Aerobic gymnastics involves repeated high-impact technical elements, yet discipline-specific evidence linking modifiable physical fitness and training exposures to injury risk remains fragmented. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize evidence on physical fitness attributes and training-related factors associated with injury risk in aerobic gymnasts, and to appraise study designs, injury definitions, and measurement approaches.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection. It were eligible studies including aer

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, there has been a reluctance to use weight training with female gymnasts due to concerns that it could cause detrimental increases in muscle mass and impede flexibility. Recent literature has demonstrated that strength training has no significant effect on flexibility and can improve athletic performance.
OBJECTIVE: To assess in a pilot study the perceptions of collegiate gymnasts and coaches toward strength training after starting inaugural strength and conditioning training.
DESIGN: Survey-based study.
SETTING: National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I

This study aimed to increase understanding of the biomechanics and dynamics of the upper limbs during the contact phase of the round-off (RO) performed using three techniques. Twenty female gymnasts performed six successful RO trials in each condition: parallel, T-shape and reverse. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected for each trial. All analyses focused on the contact phase for each hand. Continuous joint profiles examined the dynamics of these tasks as well as the kinetic sequencing. In each case, joint angles, angular velocity, moments and powers at the wrist and elbow joint were repo

INTRODUCTION: The GIMNASTRADA is an annual, non-competitive gymnastics event, held in the city of Cáceres (Extremadura, Spain) since 1996. The 2019 edition was the largest in number of participants with around 3,700 gymnasts and 12,000 spectators. The aim of this study was to determine whether the perception of quality of GIMNASTRADA 2019 was influenced by the type of participation that different groups of attenders developed in this gymnastic event (gymnasts, gymnastics group leaders, family members, audience, organisational staff).
METHODS: To this end, a total of 331 participants completed
