American journal of obstetrics and gynecology1985eng
A group of 1370 specialists in obstetrics and gynecology were surveyed for information about practice patterns, continuing medical education preferences, and their perception of the adequacy of their own residency training. The overall response rate was 65.7%. More than half were in solo practice, practiced in communities of over 250,000, had been in practice for more than 10 years, or had a full or part-time appointment with a Canadian medical school. A wide range of continuing medical education methods were used. Journals were ranked highest by 41%. It is disturbing that very few physicians

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether a personal history of having an abortion, or knowing someone close who did, has an impact on how a physician practices.
METHODS: A web-based survey was sent to Ob/Gyn residents asking about personal abortion experience, demographics, religious background, political views, residency program metrics, and intent to provide abortion. Pearson Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed to assess whether or not personal history of abortion (PHA) was significantly associated with personal characteristics or training patterns.
RESULTS: Ob/Gyn residents with a pers

BACKGROUND: Unsafe abortion is a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality in countries where induced abortion is restricted. In Kurdistan Region of Iraq, induced abortion is strictly forbidden except for life-threatening situations, increasing the risk of seeking unsafe abortions. Attitudes among healthcare professionals who directly encounter cases and consequences of induced abortion can be studied to improve women's access to safe abortion. This study aimed to examine attitudes towards induced abortion among gynecologists in Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
METHODS: This cross-sectio

In recent decades, surgical techniques, new anticancer drugs' development, and radiation equipment have led to continuous improvements in cancer survival rates and quality of life of cancer survivors (CSs). While 61.0% of gynecological cancer survivors (GCS) in Japan belonged to a working-age group (20-64 years old), the number of working GCS within the working-age population has increased. In Japan, it seems that there has been more interest in striking a balance between cancer treatment and work, especially since 2016 when the Cancer Control Act was amended and national guidelines for workin

OBJECTIVE: To identify 1) the current state of pediatric and adolescent gynecology (PAG) provision of care; 2) barriers to practicing PAG; and 3) the need for increased PAG training in residency and continuing medical education (CME).
METHODS: Obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYNs) across Canada who currently practice gynecology were asked to complete an anonymous, self-administered, Internet-based survey.
RESULTS: One-hundred and forty-seven OB/GYNs across Canada responded to the survey, and after applying exclusion criteria (retired gynecologists, medical students, postgraduate trainees

Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases is an essential component of women's primary and preventive health care. Many studies have shown that a recommendation from an obstetrician-gynecologist or other health care provider for a vaccine is one of the strongest influences on patient acceptance. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other health care providers should develop a standard process for assessing and documenting the vaccination status of patients and for recommending and administering vaccines. If allowed by state law, obstetrician-gynecologists and other health care providers are

BACKGROUND: Current cervical cancer prevention recommendations include human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, Pap and HPV co-testing, and Pap testing at 3- to 5-year intervals.
PURPOSE: To examine attitudes, practice patterns, and barriers related to HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening guidelines among U.S. obstetrician-gynecologists.
METHODS: In 2011-2012, a national sample of members of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists responded to a 15-item (some with multiple parts) questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics, clinical practices, and percei

OBJECTIVE: Less-than-annual cervical cancer screening is now recommended for most US women, raising questions about the need for routine annual bimanual pelvic examinations. Little is known about clinicians' bimanual pelvic examination practices, their beliefs about its importance, or the reasoning underlying its performance in asymptomatic women.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a nationwide survey of US obstetrician-gynecologists. Respondents (n = 521) reported their examination practices and beliefs based on vignettes for asymptomatic women across the lifespan.
RESULTS: Nearly all obstetrician-

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, can be contracted by young girls shortly after sexual debut. Human papillomavirus can lead to cervical and anogenital cancers and genital warts. A vaccine has been developed to protect against precancerous lesions. We examined obstetrician-gynecologists' practices, opinions, and knowledge regarding this vaccine.
DESIGN: A 37-item questionnaire was sent out by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to its fellows and junior fellows between May and November o

UNLABELLED: The study of claims motives is relevant since Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) is one of the specialties that it is involved with greater frequency in demands in the Medical Arbitration National Commission (CONAMED).
OBJECTIVE: In order to know the causes by those which the patients have attended to be complained of the attention provided by a Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OG).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between June 1, 1996, and November 30, 1998, there were 635 demands reported to the CONAMED for obstetrical or gynecological care, 375 (60%) derived from obstetrical care; claims were gro

Colorectal cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and is the third most common cause of cancer deaths in U.S. women. Effective screening and intervention programs exist and, if followed, could halve the number of annual deaths from this disease. Detection of early-stage disease and, more important, premalignant polyps, is possible by following the recommendations of several national societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Recommended screening consists of identification of special risk factors, annual fecal o

Sex differences in the delivery of fertility control services were explored in a national survey of 1420 recently trained obstetrician-gynecologists in active practice. Women were found to be more likely than men to provide abortion services but less likely than men to provide amniocentesis and certain infertility services. Women were found to contribute less than their proportionate share of two services for which volume was measured: artificial inseminations and sterilizations. Physician gender, however, was a less important predictor of volume of sterilizations delivered than were a set of

BACKGROUND: Utilitarianism is a normative ethical theory that evaluates moral decisions based on their consequences, emphasizing the maximisation of overall well-being/outcomes for the greatest number. It serves as an important framework in clinical settings, where ethical dilemmas frequently arise. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Oxford Utilitarianism Scale (OUS) among obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYNs). METHODS: A total of 194 obstetricians and gynecologists participated in this online study and completed the OUS alongside a brief

The preconceptional period is crucial for women and couples who desire children as it influences the progress and outcomes of a healthy pregnancy. Preconceptional care is now an accepted paradigm by most healthcare professionals. However, its implementation in healthcare programs is still in the early stages. Preconceptional care starts with communication and a collection of personal and family medical history. It then encompasses a variety of recommendations for lifestyle interventions, as well as preventive laboratory tests. This review will summarize current recommended procedures, from nut

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic and obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) surgeons have risks for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) during work in the operating room (OR). Risks for MSD have not been identified as a result of work outside the OR or during non-work tasks.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine risk factors for MSD in an orthopedic and OB/GYN surgeon.
METHODS: A case study format and mixed method design were used to gather data by using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) to measure MSD risks in the OR; the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH) to me

Cross-sex hormone treatment of transgender persons is usually uneventful, but hormone-sensitive malignancies of the (reproductive) organs of the natal and new sex (breasts, neovagina) may arise. Sex reassignment surgery impacts on the urodynamics of the reassigned sex. Pathology originating from organ systems of the natal sex may be overlooked in the new sex. In male-to-female transgender individuals, malignant tumors of the breasts and prostate may occur. Neovaginas are constructed with skin or sigmoid. Shortening of the male urethra to female dimensions is usually uneventful. In female-to-ma

OBJECTIVE: In 2012, US organizations released updated cervical cancer screening guidelines calling for less frequent screening. We surveyed practicing gynecologists in the Pacific Northwest region to understand their screening practices, gauge their uptake of the new guidelines, and identify reasons why they may not follow the new guidelines.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gynecologists from Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho were sent an online survey on behalf of their state's medical association. The survey consisted of 9 questions on sex, practice setting, community size, cervical cancer scree

UNLABELLED: Obstetricians-gynecologists often have a special and long-term relationship with their patients and are ideally placed to assess their fracture risk and to institute appropriate therapy for osteoporosis. Assessment of risk factors according to the World Health Organization and more recent guidelines (e.g., age, smoking history, previous fracture, parental fracture, corticosteroid use, weight) enables the clinician to target patients for testing of bone mineral density by techniques such as dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the proximal femur. The current therapy of choice is an o
