Placental CoQ10 levels in HELLP syndrome.

Oxidative stress is considered a key factor in HELLP syndrome, a severe complication of preeclampsia in pregnancy. In the present study we analysed the content of Coenzyme Q(10) (CoQ(10)), a fundamental component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and recognized lipophilic antioxidant, in placentas from women affected by HELLP syndrome and compared them with the relative controls. Twenty-eight patients with HELLP syndrome and twenty-eight age-matched healthy pregnant controls were enrolled. Two aliquots of placental tissue were taken immediately after delivery and placed into liquid nitrog

Pseudocholinesterase deficiency associated with HELLP syndrome.

We report a case of decreased plasma pseudocholinesterase activity in a patient with hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome. The pseudocholinesterase activity returned to normal with concomitant recovery of HELLP syndrome. This possible association is significant when general anesthesia is provided to patients with HELLP syndrome.

HELLP syndrome with reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy.

We report the case of a 30-year-old primipara who developed a triplet pregnancy after having received artificial insemination. At the end of the eighth month of pregnancy she had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and at the same time blood chemistry was indicative of HELLP syndrome. Brain MRI and EEG were altered immediately after the episode but returned to normal during a 6-month follow-up period.

[HELLP syndrome. Analysis of 2 cases].

HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, Low Platelets), one of the gestational diseases of the third trimester of pregnancy associated to eclampsia or preeclampsia, has a varied clinical expression, that include poor symptomatic patterns with malaise and/or dyspepsia, even several patterns with fatal outcome. We show two cases with clinical and laboratory criterion of HELLP syndrome, but with different clinical presentations. It's analyzed the pathogenicity, clinical-pathological expression, course and therapeutics options in HELLP syndrome.

[Acute renal insufficiency in HELLP syndrome].

We have studied patients with acute renal failure (ARF) + HELLP Syndrome admitted to the Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) between 1995 and 1996. ARF was considered when serum creatinine was greater than 1.2 mg/ml for at least 48 h. During this period, there were 173 patients with HELLP and 34 with ARF (20%). Most of cases maintained high renal output (more than 800 ml/24 h). We observed that correct fluid management restored oliguric ARF patients to adequate renal output with a better prognosis. Dialysis was necessary in 10 cases, peritoneal dialysis was preferred in our environment, because o

[HELLP syndrome. Critical state. Current concepts].

The HELLP syndrome is an English acronym, for describing patients with Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH), who also has hemolysis, elevated hepatic enzymes and low platelets, its presence is associated with a frequency of maternal mortality from 5 to 25% and when it is associated with hepatic rupture it increases to 35% and a perinatal one from 30 to 60%. It is present in 2 to 12% among women with PIH. Its etiology has not been elucidated completely, the base of its pathophysiology is an unbalance in prostanoid metabolism which conduces to generalize vasopasm with the subsequent endothelial

[HELLP syndrome. Analysis of 102 cases].

One hundred and two cases of HELLP Syndrome admitted at the Adults Intensive Care Unit since January 1992, to June 1994; 63 with severe preeclampsia, 26 eclamptics and 13 with chronic hypertension more preeclampsia-eclampsia were analysed. The mean age was 24 year (range, 15 to 42). All 102 of the patients had one or more symptoms, those more often were: headache (85), right upper-quadrant tenderness (61), nausea and/or vomiting (31). The diastolic blood pressure maximum before the admission was 100 mm Hg or less in patients and 46 had more than 110 mm Hg. The mean platelets count was 58000 (r

Severe hypoglycemia associated with HELLP syndrome.

Presented is a case of the syndrome of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet counts, in which severe maternal hypoglycemia occurred 8 hours after delivery. It is proposed that the hepatic pathologic features in this case were severe enough to interfere with glycogenolysis and glyconeogenesis.

HELLP syndrome in a pregnant patient with Gitelman syndrome.

Gitelman syndrome is characterized by hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hypocalciuria, and hypomagnesemia. The clinical course of Gitelman syndrome in pregnant women remains unclear, but it is thought to be benign. We report here the first Korean case of atypical eclampsia in a 31-year-old who was diagnosed with Gitelman syndrome incidentally during an antenatal screening test. The patient did well during pregnancy despite significant hypokalemia. At 33 weeks' gestation, the patient exhibited eclampsia, hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, and renal insufficiency

The use of angiogenic biomarkers to differentiate non-HELLP related thrombocytopenia from HELLP syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia (PE) is diagnosed using clinical criteria and in atypical cases the diagnosis may be inaccurate as there are no specific tests to confirm or exclude PE. This study sought to evaluate the utility of angiogenic biomarkers, sFlt1, sEng and PlGF to distinguish patients with gestational thrombocytopenia and immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) from patients with thrombocytopenia resulting from the HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets) syndrome, a complication of severe PE. METHODS: Serum was collected and the angiogenic biomarkers of patients with ITP

Maternal and perinatal outcome after expectant management of the HELLP syndrome compared with pre-eclampsia without HELLP syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To compare maternal and perinatal outcome of pregnancies complicated by pregnancy induced hypertension and HELLP syndrome with the outcome of pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia only. DESIGN: It was a retrospective cohort study. Fifty one patients with pregnancy induced hypertension and HELLP syndrome were matched with 51 pre-eclamptic patients according to parity and gestational age on admission in hospital. Management was expectant, treatment only symptomatic and delivery was mainly effectuated because of fetal condition. RESULTS: There was no maternal mortality in either g

Molecular Advances in Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome.

Preeclampsia (PE) constitutes one of the principal reasons for maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The circumstance typically implicates formerly healthful normotensive women, after 20 weeks of gestation, typically withinside the third trimester, without regarded threat elements or past deliveries. PE can be further complicated with hemolysis and thrombocytopenia, leading to the emergence of HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, Low platelets). Both conditions are classified as hypertensive diseases of pregnancy (HDP), and their pathogenesis has been linked t

Preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, the role of the liver.

Preeclampsia is a multisystemic disorder which accounts for the high prevalence of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially in middle and low-income countries. Currently, the primary intervention is the urgent delivery of the fetus, hence it would be advantageous to identify those who are likely to develop preeclampsia and the maternal and fetal outcomes. However, an array of risk factors makes these challenging. This review explores the potentials of liver biomarkers in predicting the occurrence and outcome of preeclampsia, which could be beneficial in reducing the burden of

[An observation of HELLP syndrome with fatal outcome].

The paper describes the morphopathological changes found at autopsy of a 42-year-old pregnant woman whose death was due to HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelets) that is rarely encountered in autopsy practice and that is a type of preeclampsia. It considers the morphogenesis of these changes in the light of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the syndrome.
