SETTING: The medical wards of a referral hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of HIV infection on clinical features in tuberculous lymphadenitis.
DESIGN: A prospective clinical study of HIV seropositive and HIV seronegative patients with lymphadenopathy.
RESULTS: Of 128 patients with peripheral lymphadenopathy, 24 had no tuberculosis (TB) and in 10 patients TB was found only in other organs. The remaining 94 patients, of whom 76% were HIV seropositive, formed our study population. TB lymphadenitis was considered proven in 89 and probable in 5 patients. D

Diarrheal diseases (DD) have distinct etiological profiles in immune-deficient and immune-competent patients. This study compares detection rates, genotype distribution and viral loads of different enteric viral agents in HIV-1 seropositive (n = 200) and HIV-1 seronegative (n = 125) children hospitalized with DD in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Except for group A rotavirus (RVA), which were detected through enzyme immunoassay, the other enteric viruses (norovirus [NoV], astrovirus [HAstV], adenovirus [HAdV] and bocavirus [HBoV]) were detected through PCR or RT-PCR. A quantitative PCR was performed f

PURPOSE: We determined whether human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection affects body cell mass and fat mass wasting among adults with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).
METHODS: We screened 967 Ugandan adults for PTB and HIV infection in a cross-sectional study. We compared anthropometric and bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) body composition parameters among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative men and women with or without PTB by using a non-parametric test.
RESULTS: We found that poor nutritional status associated with TB differed among men and women. Anthropometric and BIA body compos

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, and HIV-seropositive (HIV-positive) MSM are an especially important group for prevention efforts. This article describes findings from the Seropositive Urban Men's Study (SUMS, N = 456) and the Seropositive Urban Men's Intervention Trial (SUMIT, N = 1168). These studies were conducted from 1996 to 2002 with racially diverse samples from New York and San Francisco. Patterns of sexual behavior often reflected an understanding of the relative risks of specific sexual practices and were generally consistent with harm reduction

This article examines the multifaceted interactions among homelessness, HIV, substance abuse, and gender. Data were collected on 1,366 chronic drug users using a nationally standardized validated instrument within the Miami CARES project of a multisite federally funded program. HIV testing accompanied by pretest and posttest counseling was conducted on-site by certified phlebotomists and counselors. In addition to descriptive analyses and corresponding tests of significance, logistic regression analyses were used to clarify the complex associations between the outcome variables of homelessness

RATIONALE: Policy recommendations on contact investigation of HIV-seropositive patients with tuberculosis have changed several times. Current epidemiologic evidence informing these recommendations is considered low quality, and few large studies investigating the infectiousness of HIV-seropositive and -seronegative index cases have been performed in sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the infectiousness of HIV-seropositive and -seronegative patients with tuberculosis to their household contacts and examined potential modifiers of this relationship.
METHODS: Adults suffering from thei

Eighty of 200 HIV seropositive patients admitted in the medical wards of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria from year 1995 to 1997 were studied on presentation and compared to 40 age and sex matched controls. The main clinical features observed included weight loss, pyrexia, diarrhoea, lymphadenopathy, anaemia and pruritic dermatosis. Sixty-two of the 80 patients (73.2%) presented at stages 3 and 4 of WHO Clinical and Laboratory staging. Thirty (30) percent of these patients died between a period of one to four months after presentation. The main diseases complicating HIV infecti

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether HIV-infected patients, a group that is supposedly at risk for infection with antibiotic-resistant microbes, really does so, and to assess possible risk factors for acquiring these organisms. During the period from January 1998 to July 1999, samples of normal flora were obtained from 107 HIV-infected patients attending an outpatient clinic in Oslo, Norway. The samples were cultured for Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, coagulase-negative staphylococci and Candida spp., and the resulting isolates were teste

PURPOSE: The combination of an immature immune system and suppressed cellular immunity in children with HIV infections provides optimal conditions for rapid disease progression. As a result, pediatric AIDS has become a major epidemiological challenge. Oral fungal colonization remains one of the most common opportunistic infections observed in both adult and pediatric HIV infected patients. Although Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated opportunistic fungal species, a recently characterized Candida species, C. dubliniensis, has gained considerable attention due to its almost exclusiv

In an autopsy study the distribution of measles virus (MV) in the central nervous system (CNS) of 18 measles-infected children (13 HIV seropositive, 5 HIV seronegative), in Abidjan, Ivory Coast was examined using immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization. Of these children 17 died from measles giant cell pneumonia. In 3 of the 13 HIV-seropositive patients MV antigens and genomic RNA was detected in the CNS. One of these positive patients had an MV encephalitis with abundant virus throughout most of the CNS. MV was not detected in the CNS of any of the 5 HIV-seronegative patients. These fin

This article is based on an ethnographical study carried out in 1996. It describes and analyzes the methods of medical and family management of HIV-positive and full-blown AIDS patients in the rural environment of Burkinabé. A number of recommendations are made. Biomedical management of these patients is almost non-existent (currently there is no serology or screening advice available at the dispensary). The patient is never informed of an AIDS diagnosis. The relations between the medical personnel and the patients are dominated by a sense of powerlessness and constant fear of infection. None
