HLA class I and II antigens are common among patients with ulcerative colitis. They can be involved in the autoaggressive mechanisms of the disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of HLA B and HLA DR antigens and estimate the correlation to extra-bowel manifestations of the disease. 50 patients with ulcerative colitis and 20 healthy controls were examined. HLA-B27, -B7, -B40, -DR1, -DR2, -DR3, -DR4 and -DR7 were determined using monoclonal antibodies in microlymphocytotoxic method. HLA I and/or HLA II antigens were detected in 36% of patients: HLA I in 28% and HLA II 16%.

Forty-nine Israeli Jewish patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were studied for their HLA A, B, C, DR antigen frequency. A significant increase in HLA Aw31 and HLA DR1 was observed (p less than 5.10(-5) and p less than 5.10(-3) respectively). 45% of Aw31 positive patients were sero-negative for rheumatoid factor, while most HLA DR1 positive individuals were seropositive. IgA nephropathy (IgAN) has been associated with HLA-DR4. We have recently described two non-allelic Taq I DQ beta gene-associated fragments sized 2.0 kb (T2) and 6.0 kb (T6), which strongly associate with DR4. T2 represents a polymorphism of the DQ beta gene and has been redesignated DQw8 (10th International HLA Workshop). This study of 110 seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients confirms the significant association of susceptibility to RA with HLA-DR4 specificity (P less than 0.001). Regional variations in the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) distribution patterns of coeliac disease (CD) have been reported. This study focuses on phenotype frequencies of a cohort of Austrian paediatric CD patients in comparison with those recorded in the literature. HLA class I and II typing was performed in 136 CD patients and 667 healthy controls from the general population of the same geographical area. The HLA phenotypes of our controls agreed with those published for Caucasians. In our patients the relative risks (RR) were 6.43 for DR3 and 2.52 for DR7, the aetiologic fractions being 0.58

Two sister cases of autoimmune hepatitis are described. Case 1 involved a 49-year-old woman who suffered from bleeding gums and general fatigue. Her laboratory data showed a marked increase in transaminase levels, an elevated IgG level with titers 1:80 or more of both antinuclear and smooth muscle antibodies and thrombocytopenia.
