Conditions for versatile learning, Helmholtz's unconscious inference, and the task of perception.

It is a mistake to consider perception and learning separately because what one learns is strongly constrained by what one perceives, and what one perceives depends on what one has experienced. I shall propose the hypothesis that perception is the computation of a representation that enables us to make reliable and versatile inferences about associations occurring in the world around us--that is, perception prepares the ground for learning. The statistical problem in learning is to determine whether a compound event such as "C followed by U" is a random co-occurrence or a significant associati

The effect of worry on cardiovascular response to phobic imagery.

Cardiovascular response to phobic exposures has been shown to reflect the degree of emotional processing of phobic material and relates in important ways to outcome in exposure therapy. The present study investigated the effect of worry on such processing. Speech anxious subjects visualized a phobic scene for 10 trials. Three groups differed according to whether they engaged in relaxed, neutral, or worrisome thinking just prior to each scene presentation. Although the three types of thinking had no effect on cardiovascular activity during the thinking periods, subjects in the worry group displ

Intensification and habituation of experimental motion sickness in squirrel monkeys by repeated horizontal rotation.

The aim of this research was to quantify the development of habituation or intensification of experimental motion sickness induced in Bolivian squirrel monkeys by repeated exposures to horizontal rotation. Incidence, frequency, and latency of vomiting responses were recorded from monkeys rotated daily in a transparent testing chamber at 30 rpm for periods of 1 or 2 hours. Data showed that more than half of the subjects revealed habituation in terms of increased latencies for vomiting. Some showed a tendency to vomit increasingly earlier with multiple daily exposures to rotation. The developmen

Physiological aspects of the effects of sound on man and animals.

A review of some short-term and long-term physiological effects of sound on non-auditory body functions is given. It is pointed out that the short-term effects depend closely on the acoustic properties of the sound. Habituation is rapid for steady signals but slow for interrupted ones. Irrelevant, meaningless sound, presented to rats over their life-time in such a way as to simulate an industrial acoustic environment, did not affect blood pressure, life-span or morbidity incidence. As far as the injurious effect of sound on the inner ear is concerned, it was shown that spontaneously hypertensi

Plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

The plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was investigated by examining three different processes, namely vestibular habituation to repeated head angular velocity steps, vestibular compensation after hemilabyrinthectomy, and vestibular compensation in patients suffering from unilateral Ménière's disease. The first two processes were examined in the cat, while the third process was studied in man. A quantification of these processes was obtained by computing some parameters characterizing the diagrams of the slow cumulative eye position (SCEP) and the slow phase eye velocity (SPEV) or

Recovery from retrograde amnesia: a learning process.

Retrograde amnesia was produced in rats by electroconvulsive shock. Memory recovered if the animals were given repeated test trials. Memory did not recover if steps were taken to reduce the conditioning properties of the test trials; the manipulations included eliminating the response, altering the apparatus cues, or extinguishing conditioned "fear" by confining animals to the apparatus during the first test trial.

Late cortical positivity and cardiac responsitivity in female dental phobics when exposed to phobia-relevant pictures.

OBJECTIVES: Dental phobia is currently classified as a specific phobia of the blood-injection-injury (BII) subtype. In another subtype, animal phobia, enhanced amplitudes of late event-related potentials have consistently been identified for patients during passive viewing of disorder-relevant pictures. However, this has not been shown for BII phobics, and studies with dental phobics are lacking. Findings on cardiac responses in BII phobia during exposure are heterogeneous, as some studies showed a diphasic pattern of heart rate acceleration and deceleration, whereas others observed pure accel

Oscillatory Correlates of Habituation: EEG Evidence of Sustained Frontal Theta Activity to Food Cues.

Understanding how the brain adapts to repeated food-related cues provides insight into attentional and motivational mechanisms that influence eating behaviour. Previous studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) have shown that food cues, particularly high-calorie stimuli, elicit sustained neural responses with repeated exposure. The present study extends this line of inquiry by examining the oscillatory dynamics of within-session habituation using time-frequency analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) data from 24 healthy adult participants. Repeated presentations of the same high-calori

Rescue Thalamotomy for Habituation to Deep Brain Stimulation in Essential Tremor: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Habituation to deep brain stimulation (DBS) remains a therapeutic challenge in essential tremor (ET), with 4-42% of patients experiencing progressive loss of benefit. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old man with ET presented with debilitating bilateral tremor. The patient underwent bilateral DBS to posterior subthalamic area (PSA). Despite initial tremor relief, symptoms gradually recurred three months later. After 12 months of unsuccessful programming, the patient underwent left-sided radiofrequency Vim thalamotomy. Due to severe tremor rebound phenomenon, tremor control was achieved in 1

Revisiting perceptual sensitivity to non-native speech in a diverse sample of bilinguals.

Werker and Tees (1984) prompted decades of research attempting to detail the paths infants take towards specialisation for the sounds of their native language(s). Most of this research has examined the trajectories of monolingual children. However, it has also been proposed that bilinguals, who are exposed to greater phonetic variability than monolinguals and must learn the rules of two languages, may remain perceptually open to non-native language sounds later into life than monolinguals. Using a visual habituation paradigm, the current study tests this question by comparing 15- to 18-month-o

Bimodal sensory integration in migraine: A study of the effect of visual stimulation on somatosensory evoked cortical responses.

BACKGROUND: Merging of sensory information is a crucial process for adapting the behaviour to the environment in all species. It is not known if this multisensory integration might be dysfunctioning interictally in migraine without aura, where sensory stimuli of various modalities are processed abnormally when delivered separately. To investigate this question, we compared the effects of a concomitant visual stimulation on conventional low-frequency somatosensory evoked potentials and embedded high-frequency oscillations between migraine patients and healthy volunteers. METHODS: We recorded s

25 years of tinnitus retraining therapy.

This year marks 25 years of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), the approach that aims to eliminate tinnitus as a problem by extinguishing functional connections between the auditory and the limbic and autonomic nervous systems to achieve habituation of tinnitus-evoked reactions and subsequently habituation of perception. TRT addresses directly decreased sound tolerance (DST) as well as tinnitus. TRT consists of counseling and sound therapy, both based on the neurophysiological model of tinnitus. The main goal of retraining counseling is to reclassify tinnitus into the category of a neutral sti

Habituation as a determinant of human food intake.

Research has shown that animals and humans habituate on a variety of behavioral and physiological responses to repeated presentations of food cues, and habituation is related to amount of food consumed and cessation of eating. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of experimental paradigms used to study habituation, integrate a theoretical approach to habituation to food based on memory and associative conditioning models, and review research on factors that influence habituation. Individual differences in habituation as they relate to obesity and eating disorders are reviewed,

Précis of neuroconstructivism: how the brain constructs cognition.

Neuroconstructivism: How the Brain Constructs Cognition proposes a unifying framework for the study of cognitive development that brings together (1) constructivism (which views development as the progressive elaboration of increasingly complex structures), (2) cognitive neuroscience (which aims to understand the neural mechanisms underlying behavior), and (3) computational modeling (which proposes formal and explicit specifications of information processing). The guiding principle of our approach is context dependence, within and (in contrast to Marr [1982]) between levels of organization. We

Effect of a novel motion desensitization training regime and controlled breathing on habituation to motion sickness.

To study whether controlled breathing, known to ameliorate motion sickness, speeds habituation to nauseogenic motion when used in a novel accelerated training regime, 30 participants (13 men, 17 women, ages 18-51 years) were randomized to either a Breathing group or a Control group. Randomization was balanced for rotation tolerance measured during a first exposure to off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR 72 degrees sec.(-1)). Participants subsequently received four exposures to OVAR in 1-hr. (accelerated training). The Breathing group followed taped instructions to control their breathing during tr

The effects of safety-seeking behavior and guided threat reappraisal on fear reduction during exposure: an experimental investigation.

We examined the effects of safety-seeking behavior and guided threat focus and reappraisal on fear reduction during exposure. Participants (N=46) displaying marked claustrophobic fear were randomized to one of three 30-min exposure conditions: (a) guided threat focus and reappraisal; (b) safety-behavior utilization; or (c) exposure only control. Tripartite outcome assessments during a behavioral approach test, along with measures of suffocation and restriction fears were obtained at pre- and post-treatment, and at a 2-week follow-up. Treatment process measures were collected throughout treatme

Response to repeated CO2 in individuals with elevated anxiety sensitivity: replication with 20% CO2.

The present report replicates and extends previous work examining response patterns to repeated presentation of CO2. In previous studies, two distinct response patterns to repeated presentation of 35% CO2 were noted, representing habituation and nonhabituation of anxiety. In this report, 21 participants who had never experienced a panic attack but who reported high levels of anxiety sensitivity were presented with 12 trials of 20% CO2, followed by a trial involving inhalation of room air (to examine dishabituation) and two more trials of 20% CO2. Results indicated that 67% of the sample report

Habituation of cognitive and physiological arousal and social anxiety.

This study examined differences in habituation between high and low socially anxious Ss. Participants gave three impromptu speeches, each separated by a brief rest interval. Skin conductance and heart rate were monitored during the speeches. Following each speech participants completed self-ratings of nervousness, heart rate, and palmar sweat activity as well as a modified Social Interaction Self Statement Test. Low anxious controls showed significant reduction of negative expectations and self-reported nervousness, heart rate, and sweat activity across the three trials. Actual heart rate of l

Peripherally obtained electrophysiological responses to olfactory stimulation in man: electro-olfactograms exhibit a smaller degree of desensitization compared with subjective intensity estimates.

After chemical stimulation of the human olfactory epithelium it is possible to record a negative response (electro-olfactogram, EOG) which is interpreted as the summated receptor potentials of the olfactory nerve. The aim of the present investigation was to test the EOG's changes in relation to pairs of stimuli. Stimulation was performed with vanillin (0.8 ppm) regarded to exclusively excite fibers of the olfactory nerve. Ten healthy volunteers participated in the experiments. Pairs of stimuli were applied at different interstimulus intervals ISIs (2-8 s). EOG could be recorded in 6 out of 10
