Anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole in cattle: comparison of critical and controlled tests.

Twelve calves were experimentally inoculated with 6 species of gastrointestinal nematodes and the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica. Six calves were administered albendazole at 10 mg/kg of body weight, and the drug efficacy was determined by critical and controlled tests. Albendazole was only 74% effective against Haemonchus contortus (cambendazole-resistant strain), 99 to 100% effective against Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Cooperia oncophora, and Oesophagostomum radiatum, and 54% effective against the liver fluke. Except for H contortus, the critical test provided as acc

Whole genome copy number variation analysis to detect genomic regions for resistance to Haemonchus contortus in Sheep.

BACKGROUND: Rising drug resistance necessitates genomic selection to enhance parasite resistance in sheep. Copy number variations (CNVs) constitute structural genomic alterations that influence livestock traits by modifying gene dosage. This study aimed to identify candidate CNVs that differentiate between Haemonchus contortus-resistant and susceptible Rideau Arcott ewe lambs through comprehensive whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis. RESULTS: Fecal egg count (FEC) analysis of 32 inoculated animals across five time points (days 21, 28, 35, 42, and 56 post-infection) identified 16 individual

Identification and validation of protective glycoproteins in Haemonchus contortus H11.

Barbervax is the first and only available vaccine to protect animals against Haemonchus contortus - one of the most pathogenic parasites of small ruminants. This vaccine contains a kind of native antigen called H11, a glycoprotein complex derived from integral gut of this parasite. Native H11 has been shown to induce high levels (72-95%) of protection, but single or two recombinant molecules of H11 are consistently unsuccessful. An increasing number of aminopeptidases related to H11 have been characterized in the past three decades, but little is known about which ones are the key contributors

Worm replacement with susceptible Haemonchus contortus benefits weight gain, reduces anthelmintic treatments and impacts sheep breeds differently.

This study evaluated the effect of partial and total replacement of Haemonchus contortus in sheep breeds. Pregnant ewes of White Dorper (DO), Santa Inês (SI) and Texel (TX) breeds were allocated into three groups: Control (C), Partial Replacement (PR) and Total Replacement (TR). PR and TR ewes received anthelmintics (AH), were artificially infected with H. contortus-susceptible isolate and grazed on resistant-infested or worm-free paddocks, respectively. Control animals were untreated and naturally infected. 106 lambs were born and kept in the paddocks of their respective mothers. Their egg co

Hybridization, high genetic diversity, and molecular evidence of drug resistance to albendazole and levamisole in Haemonchus populations infecting goats in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Haemonchosis, due to infection with Haemonchus contributes to livestock morbidity globally, resulting in economic losses. Hybrids between Haemonchus contortus and H. placei have been evidenced, where sharing of hosts, geographical sympatry, and farming practices allow opportunities for hybridization. In Thailand, high prevelances of H. contortus infecting goats have been documented, and high levels of drug resistance are strongly suspected, due to unregulated and widespread use of anthelmintics (e.g. benzimidazoles and imidazothiazoles). Moreover, the exchange of genetic material f

Beyond parasitism: Exploring the microbial profile of Haemonchus contortus and its predilection site (abomasum) in Kashmir Merino sheep.

Gastrointestinal helminth infection, particularly by Haemonchus contortus, poses significant challenges to sheep farming worldwide. While anthelmintic drugs have been traditional control measures, the emergence of resistance calls for alternative strategies. Understanding the interaction between parasites, host, and their microbiome is crucial for management of helminth infection. This study intricately explores the interactions between microbial communities in Kashmir Merino sheep infected with H. contortus, to understand the complex interplay between host, parasite, and their microbiome. Influence of targeted selective anthelmintic treatment on the productive performance of wool and hair lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes in Brazil.

Targeted selective treatment (TST) is an alternative method to reduce the use of anthelmintics and delay the development of resistant nematode populations. However, there is limited information on the actual effects of this type of treatment on livestock productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production performance of Santa Ines (hair) and Ile de France (wool) lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) under TST based on packed cell volume (PCV) versus suppressive anthelmintic treatments. Thirty-eight lambs were divided into two treatment groups: Supp

Exploration of machine learning models to predict the environmental and remote sensing risk factors of haemonchosis in sheep flocks of Rajasthan, India.

Globally haemonchosis in sheep is a known devastating disease imposing considerable economic loss. Understanding the environmental risk factors and their role is essentially required to manage the disease successfully. In this study, 14 years' disease data was analysed to predict the risk factors responsible for the occurrence of the disease. Season-wise analysis revealed high incidence during monsoon and post-monsoon and least in winter and summer seasons. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) revealed the significant environmental and remote sensing risk factors contributing to haemonchosis

Relationships between FAMACHA© scores and parasite incidence in sheep and goats.

One of the most important activities in animal raising is parasite control. Since parasites share what animals eat on one hand, they have disease-causing effects on the other hand, they are parasites that must be fought. In fact, they can be responsible for the decrease in yield and can also cause death. Haemonchus contortus parasite from the Trichostrongylidae family is a blood parasite that causes anemia in sheep and goats. In this study, using the FAMACHA© card, which is widely used in the determination of anemia caused by Haemonchus contortus in the world, the color of the conjunctiva was

A new paraprobiotic-based treatment for control of Haemonchus contortus in sheep.

Haemonchus contortus is a critical parasite of goats and sheep. Infection by this blood-feeding gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasite has significant health consequences, especially in lambs and kids. The parasite has developed resistance to virtually all known classes of small molecule anthelmintics used to treat it, giving rise in some areas to multidrug resistant parasites that are very difficult to control. Thus, new anthelmintics are urgently needed. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crystal protein 5B (Cry5B), a naturally occurring protein made by a bacterium widely and safely used around t

Understanding Haemonchus contortus Better Through Genomics and Transcriptomics.

Parasitic roundworms (nematodes) cause substantial mortality and morbidity in animals globally. The barber's pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, is one of the most economically significant parasitic nematodes of small ruminants worldwide. Although this and related nematodes can be controlled relatively well using anthelmintics, resistance against most drugs in common use has become a major problem. Until recently, almost nothing was known about the molecular biology of H. contortus on a global scale. This chapter gives a brief background on H. contortus and haemonchosis, immune responses, vaccine

Absence of detectable benzimidazole-resistance associated alleles in Haemonchus placei in cattle in Nigeria revealed by pyrosequencing of β-tubulin isotype 1.

Trichostrongyles are gastrointestinal parasites that occur globally and can cause subclinical to severe, sometimes life-threatening, infections in ruminants, particularly young animals. Benzimidazoles (BZ) are commonly used for the treatment of gastrointestinal parasites in ruminants. Increasing spread of worm populations with anthelmintics resistance has been reported and is considered a consequence of highly frequent and longstanding use of anthelmintics. To obtain initial information regarding the occurrence of putatively BZ-resistant Nigerian Haemonchus populations, screening based on the

Visceral helminth communities of sympatric mule and white-tailed deer from the Davis Mountains of Texas.

Hybridizing populations of mule (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) from the Davis Mountains of Texas were examined to determine similarities in species composition of their helminth communities and if abundances of helminth species in those communities varied across host species and seasonal factors. Only three cestode and three nematode species were recovered. There were very low abundances of species and little diversity in the helminth communities of both hosts. Common helminth species were shared by both deer, and the significant variance in abundances of three of
