High hand grip strength is a significant risk factor and a useful predictor of postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most critical complications of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Studies on predictive factors for POPF that can be identified preoperatively are limited. Recent reports have highlighted the association between the preoperative nutritional status, including sarcopenia, and postoperative complications. We examined preoperative risk factors for POPF after PD, focusing on nutritional indicators. METHODS: A total of 153 consecutive patients who underwent PD at our institution were enrolled in this study. Preoperative nutritional parame

The relationship between peak inspiratory flow and hand grip strength measurement in men with mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) decreases quality of life and muscular strength. Inspiratory flow is important for inhalants in the bronchi but is complicated to measure in routine practice. We hypothesized that hand grip strength (HGS) would correlate with inhalation rate in patients with mild COPD. METHODS: The COPD patients were recruited at the St. Marianna University School of Medicine, Yokohama Seibu Hospital, from 2015 to 2018. We measured peak inspiratory flow (PIF) through an In-Check flow meter attached with Diskus [PIF(D)] and Turbuhaler [PIF(T)] inhalers.

Hand grip strength and future hospitalisations in Māori and non-Māori New Zealand octogenarians: the LiLACS NZ cohort study.

AIM: With the population ageing, age-related illness and hospitalisation are of concern. Chronic sarcopenia, low muscle strength and mass, and hand grip strength (HGS) are known to be associated with future hospitalisation in older people. The aim here was to determine the association of ethnicity and sex with these relationships in New Zealand octogenarians. METHODS: This paper used data from the LiLACS NZ study, of 421 Māori and 516 non-Māori in 2010-2011 with follow-up hospitalisation data for 13 years. Generalised linear models tested the association between HGS or probable chronic sarcop

Evaluation of using grip strength and hand muscle cross-sectional area to predict secondary fractures post distal radius fracture.

UNLABELLED: Grip strength measurement, as a surrogate of sarcopenia diagnosis, effectively predicts secondary fracture risk in distal radius fracture patients. This simple tool enhances clinical practice by identifying high-risk patients for targeted interventions, potentially preventing or reversing functional decline and recurrent fractures. PURPOSE: To evaluate grip strength and hand muscle cross-sectional area as predictors of secondary fracture risk in patients with a history of distal radius fracture (DRF), serving as surrogates of the diagnosis of sarcopenia. METHODS: A retrospective
