When holding or carrying vibrating machines, the coupling forces play a major role in transmitting the vibrations to the hand-arm system. In an epidemiologic study, two recommended methods from ISO/TS 15230-2 are used to investigate the relationship between coupling force-adjusted vibration exposures and their related risk of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb. Therefore, coupling forces have been professionally estimated for 408 machines used by 683 male participants during their entire working life and coupling force-adjusted long-term vibration doses are calculated. Despite differe

CASE: A 47-year-old orthopaedic surgeon presented with acute volar left wrist pain. He performed over 250 robot-assisted knee arthroplasties each year. Color Doppler evaluation revealed bilateral persistent median arteries and bifid median nerves, with focal occlusive thrombosis of the left median artery. He was advised rest and oral aspirin. He could return to his professional activities after 1 month. He had no recurrence of symptoms at 1 year of follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Orthopaedic surgeons use vibrating hand tools on a daily basis. The possibility of hand-arm vibration syndrome must be cons

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is primarily a disorder of the fingers and hands. However, in some cases, vibration-exposed workers are observed to have also episodic blanching of the hands and feet. In latter cases, arteriographies of both the upper and lower extremities are necessary to diagnose the background arterial disorders. In this study, eight HAVS subjects with such disorders were examined by arteriography for differential diagnosis in cases of workers' accident compensation. In three HAVS cases with thromboangiitis obliterans, the arteriographic examination revealed obstructive c

Sufficient evidence is available at this time to conclude that several well-defined soft-tissue disorders of the upper extremities are etiologically related to occupational factors. These disorders include tendinitis of the hand and wrist, CTS, and hand-arm vibration syndrome. Force, repetition, and vibration have been established as risk factors in the etiology of these disorders. Evidence exists that other, poorly understood factors also may contribute to etiology. At this time no firm guidelines can be established regarding maximum no-effect exposure levels. We agree, however, with Armstron

Occupational exposure to mechanical vibration can produce the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), whose most disabling symptom is persistent muscle pain. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology of HAVS pain is still poorly understood, precluding the development of mechanism-based therapies. Since interleukin 33 (IL-33) is essential for inflammation and recovery that follows skeletal muscle injury, we explored its role in muscle pain in a model of HAVS, in adult male rats. Concomitant to mechanical hyperalgesia, an increase in IL-33 in the ipsilateral gastrocnemius muscle was observed 24 hours after

OBJECTIVES: Segmental sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) was measured from the wrists to the hands and digits in a population of 134 (126 men and 8 women) vibration-exposed shipyard workers following systemic warming using a bicycle ergometer. Results were compared to earlier nerve conduction tests, identical in execution, except that the warming process was segmental and cutaneous. The study was designed to investigate whether SNCVs, which were selectively slow in the fingers after segmental cutaneous (skin surface) warming, would be affected differently by systemic warming.

This paper is a review of some recent findings in physiopathology of work related upper limb disorders and hand-arm-vibration-syndrome (HAVS). In a first section the data relative to work related upper limb musculoskeletal disorders are collected in three groups referring respectively to the muscle, to the tendon and to the peripheral nerve. Furthermore the physiopathological data are analyzed with respect to the Strain Index proposed by Moore and Garg. In a second section the physiopathological mechanisms of HAVS are summarized.

Modelling the foot-ankle system (FAS) while exposed to foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) is essential for designing inhibition methods to prevent the effects of vibration-induced white-foot. K-means analysis was conducted on a data set containing vibration transmissibility from the floor to 24 anatomical locations on the right foot of 21 participants. The K-means analysis found three locations to be sufficient for summarising the FTV response. A three segment, four degrees-of-freedom lumped parameter model of the FAS was designed to model the transmissibility response at three locations when ex

BACKGROUND: The vascular component of the hand-arm-vibration syndrome (HAVS) is often characterized by vibration-induced white fingers (VWF). Active substances secreted by the vascular endothelial cells (VEC) maintain a dynamic balance but damage to the blood vessels may occur when the equilibrium is altered, thus forming an important pathological basis for VWF. This study was aimed at investigating vascular damage indicators as a basis for an early detection of disorders caused by vibration, using the rat tail model.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Experiments were conducted using a control group of ra

BACKGROUND: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) includes a spectrum of vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal symptoms resulting from exposure to vibrating tools. Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a lesion of the ulnar artery as it courses adjacent to the hamate bone and results from either single or repeated episodes of trauma to the hypothenar eminence. There is a need to distinguish symptoms of HHS from those of classical HAVS since precise diagnosis may alter both the clinical and occupational management of the affected employee.

Although excessive dynamic deformation of the soft tissues in the fingertip under vibration loading is thought to induce hand-arm vibration syndrome, the in vivo distributions of the dynamic stress/strain of the tissues in the fingertip under vibration conditions have not been studied because they cannot be measured experimentally. In the present study, we analyzed the dynamic responses of a fingertip to vibrations by extending our previously proposed three-dimensional finite element (FE) model. The FE model of the fingertip contains the essential anatomical structures of a finger, such as ski

Maintenance-of-way workers in North America who construct railroad tracks utilize specialized powered-hand tools, which lead to hand-transmitted vibration exposure. In this study, the maintenance-of-way workers were surveyed about neuro-musculoskeletal disorders, powered-hand tools and work practices. Information about vibration emission data of trade specific powered-hand tools for the North American and European Union markets was searched online to obtain respective user information of manufacturer and compared to non-commercial international data banks. The survey showed that maintenance-of

BACKGROUND: Prolonged exposure to hand-transmitted vibration is associated with an increased occurrence of symptoms and signs of disorders in the vascular, neurological and osteoarticular systems of the upper limbs. However, the available epidemiological evidence is derived from studies on high vibration levels caused by vibratory tools, whereas little is known about possible upper limb disorders caused by chronic exposure to low vibration levels emitted by fixed sources.

OBJECTIVE: Officially 10-26 cases of vibration-induced white fingers (VWF) have been reported annually in Finland. It has been suggested that the numbers are underestimated. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the cumulative exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) and the prevalence of clinically diagnosed cases of VWF and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a population of Finnish metal workers and to determine the symptoms and clinical tests that would best predict the diagnosis.
METHODS: A questionnaire on vibration exposure at the workplace and symptoms of the upper extremities was

Work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD) are among the most commonly reported occupational illnesses. Epidemiological evidence of work-relatedness has been reported for a number of conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, hand/wrist tendinitis, shoulder tendinitis and hand-arm vibration syndrome. A range of electrodiagnostic techniques and psychophysical tests has been used to assess neurological dysfunction associated with WRULD, whereas only very few studies have examined biochemical markers of soft tissue injury. This report reviews key literature on physiological tests and biochemica

Sixty-six Jackhammer drillers and 35 blasters from two mines were clinically screened for hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The screening consisted of questionnaire-based information, clinical examination including measurement of phalangeal circumferences of fingers (FCT) and motor nerve conduction (MCV) studies. In a warm environment, the prevalence of symptom complexes suggested the existence of peripheral neuropathy and musculoskeletal abnormalities rather than any peripheral circulatory disorders. Clinical examination revealed soft tissue wasting in the hands (26 cases), ulnar nerve impa

Objectives: Vibration exposure is a known risk factor for developing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and insufficient outcomes for surgery for CTS have been reported after such exposure. We aim to investigate whether vibration exposure affects patient-reported outcomes following open carpal tunnel release. Methods: From a population surgically treated for CTS (n = 962), we identified patients who reported previous or present vibration exposure, had undergone preoperative electrophysiology testing and answered the Quick Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) questionnaire before and a

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this cohort study were to evaluate possible long-term effects of occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) in terms of increased tremor. The aims were to evaluate whether exposure during follow-up, baseline hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), baseline manual dexterity or current medical conditions or life-style habits might be associated with increased tremor. A further aim was to compare two different activation conditions: postural vs rest tremor.

Anti-vibration gloves have been used to block the transmission of vibration from powered hand tools to the user, and to protect users from the negative health consequences associated with exposure to vibration. However, there are conflicting reports as to the efficacy of gloves in protecting workers. The goal of this study was to use a characterized animal model of vibration-induced peripheral vascular and nerve injury to determine whether antivibration materials reduced or inhibited the effects of vibration on these physiological symptoms. Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration at 125 Hz
