INTRODUCTION: Compared to men, the decline in smoking during the past few decades has been slower for women, and smoking-related morbidity and mortality has increased substantially. Identifying sex-specific risk factors will inform more targeted intervention/prevention efforts. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted during the first COVID-19 wave, to examine the impact of COVID-19 on mental health using an anonymous online survey, enrolling 9565 individuals in 78 countries. Cortisol deposited in the hair can be used as a tool for the objective assessment of chronic stress. The authors compared the efficiency of cortisol extraction by several methods in different individuals. Hair samples from 20 men were either prewashed or not, and either cut into small pieces with scissors or pulverized using liquid nitrogen. In this study we examined three aspects pertaining to adrenocortical responsiveness in free-ranging Australian freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus johnstoni).
