Rapid and Culture Free Identification of Francisella in Hare Carcasses by High-Resolution Tandem Mass Spectrometry Proteotyping.

Zoonotic pathogens that can be transmitted via food to humans have a high potential for large-scale emergencies, comprising severe effects on public health, critical infrastructures, and the economy. In this context, the development of laboratory methods to rapidly detect zoonotic bacteria in the food supply chain, including high-resolution mass spectrometry proteotyping are needed. In this work, an optimized sample preparation method for liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based proteome profiling was established for Francisella isolates, and a cluster analysis, as well

Histopathological findings of Fasciola hepatica infection in non-native European hare (Lepus europaeus) in Southern Chile.

Fasciola hepatica is a parasite introduced in America from Europe, being considered of concern for public health and animal production, especially in countries with endemic areas as occur in Chile. In this country, the research has been focused mainly in domestic ruminants, with native and introduced wildlife being largely ignored. Thus, the aim of this study was to report the infection by Fasciola hepatica in an introduced mammal, the European hare, which is distributed along a vast area of the country. One in 42 hares hunted showed histological lesions compatible with F. hepatica, and harbor

Effects of Protostrongylus sp. and Pneumocystis sp. on the pulmonary tissue and the condition of mountain and brown hares from Finland.

Mountain hares (Lepus timidus) and brown hares (Lepus europaeus) shot by hunters in several game management districts in southern and central Finland during the hunting season from September to the end of February 1998-2001 were examined for Protostrongylus sp. and Pneumocystis sp. Of the mountain hares, 96.5% (194/201) were infected with the lungworm Protostrongylus sp. and 16.9% (32/189) had cyst forms of the fungus Pneumocystis sp. in the lungs. The prevalence of the lungworm and fungus in brown hares was 60% (18/30) and 20.0% (6/30), respectively. The tissue changes associated with the lun

[The incidence and seasonal dynamics of yersinioses (Y. pseudotuberculosis, Y. enterocolitica), staphylococcoses and pasteurelloses in hares from 1976 to 1982].

In the years 1976-1982, 2071 dead hares from 64 districts of the Czech Socialist Republic were examined. The diseases under study killed 400 hares (19.3%). Pseudotuberculosis which killed 210 hares (10.14%) from 46 districts of the Czech Socialist Republic (71.9%) is considered as the most important hare population regulator. The highest occurrence of diseases was recorded in 1978. Pseudotuberculosis was of seasonal nature with the highest incidence in November and December. The second most widespread disease was pasteurellosis which killed 126 hares (6.08%) from 36 districts of the Czech Soci

Running after two hares in visual working memory: Exploring retrospective attention to multiple items using simulation, behavioral outcomes, and eye tracking.

Multi-item retro-cueing effects refer to better working memory performance for multiple items when they are cued after their offset compared to a neutral condition in which all items are cued. However, several studies have reported boundary conditions, and findings have also sometimes failed to replicate. We hypothesized that a strategy to focus on only one of the cued items could possibly yield these inconsistent patterns. In Study 1, a Monte Carlo simulation showed that randomly selecting one of the cued items as the focus in each trial increased the chance of obtaining significant "multi-it

The First Confirmed Outbreak of Recombinant Myxomatosis Virus in the Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus P.) Population in Hungary.

We investigated the emergence and spread of the ha-MYXV (recombinant myxoma virus) in the brown hare (Lepus europaeus) population in Hungary. During PCR genetic analysis of 37 samples collected between October 7 and 28, 2025, at the beginning of the outbreak, we found recombinant myxoma virus DNA in 89.2% of the samples, which are the first known ha-MYXV type epidemic infections in brown hares in Hungary. The recombinant MYXV infecting Lagomorpha species first entered western Hungary as a result of an outbreak near Vienna (Austria), and then appeared in the eastern part of the country within a

Experience-mediated transcriptional memory correlates with hypoxia resistance in the nervous system of the sea hare Aplysia californica.

Current therapeutics for hypoxic/ischemic brain damage can benefit from insights resulting from the study of hypoxia/anoxia-resistant organisms. Hypoxia resistance, however, is not a common feature in mammalian models. Being naturally exposed to hypoxic/anoxic conditions, the sea hare Aplysia californica could become a very useful model for the study of hypoxia resistance. Here, we experimentally exposed two cohorts of A. californica, resulting from crosses of adults with different environmental exposure histories, to daily 6 h pulses of hypoxic water conditions (<1.8 mgO2/mL) for six consecut

Concentration of selected biogenic and risk elements in liver, kidneys and muscle of domestic rabbit and wild brown hare.

In the present study the concentration of selected elements in tissues of domestic rabbits and of wild brown-hares (kidneys, liver, and muscle - m. quadriceps femoris) in Slovakian habitats were determined. After mineralization the elements examined were detected using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry/graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. For rabbits, Fe in the liver was correlated with essential (Mn, Cu) (R2 = 0.94, p < 0.05; R2 = 0.96, p < 0.05 respectively) or toxic (Pb) elements (R2 = -0.93, p < 0.05). Causes of admission and outcomes of brown hare (Lepus europaeus) leverets at wildlife rescue centres in the Czech Republic.

BACKGROUND: Wildlife rescue centres care for orphaned and injured young as an integral part of their work. However, inappropriate interventions in nature can have a negative effect on the survival of young hares, especially when the care of these young is not very successful. The aim of this study was to assess the number of brown hare leverets admitted to rescue centres in the Czech Republic in the period from 2010 to 2019, the causes of their admission to rescue centres and their outcomes. RESULTS: We evaluated the number of brown hare leverets admitted to rescue centres in the Czech Republ

Roles of host species, geographic separation, and isolation in the seroprevalence of Jamestown Canyon and snowshoe hare viruses in Newfoundland.

California serogroup viruses, including Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) and snowshoe hare virus (SSHV), are mosquito-borne members of the Bunyaviridae family and are endemic across North America. These arboviruses are potential pathogens which occasionally cause neuroinvasive disease in humans and livestock. A neutralization assay was used to document JCV and SSHV seroprevalence using blood collected from a variety of domestic and wildlife host species. These species were sampled in an island setting, Newfoundland, which contains diverse ecoregions, ecological landscapes, and habitats. Seropreval

Enrichment and Reduction of Microsatellite Regions in the Myxoma Virus Genome Following Species Jump to the Iberian Hare (Lepus granatensis).

Myxoma virus (MYXV), the causative agent of myxomatosis, is endemic in wild populations of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In 2018, the virus acquired four genes (M157L, M158L, M159L and M160L) from a yet unidentified source and gained the capacity to infect the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis). The new viral strain, termed ha-MYXV (hare myxoma virus), continues to circulate within Iberian hare populations, causing a dramatic decline in numbers of this species. To analyse the genetic stability of the emergent ha-MYXV, following its host species jump, we sequenced the novel four-ge

Simultaneous detection of classic and natural recombinant myxoma virus strains in European brown hare population in West Hungary.

Historically, Myxomatosis was a severe disease in the European wild and domesticated rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) with only a few reported cases in hares. Recently, beside the classic myxoma virus strains, new natural recombinant strains have emerged. The latter ones caused several outbreaks, in European countries, in different Lepus species, indicating a species spillover of the virus. In our study, we isolated two distinct myxoma viruses from European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) that were found dead close to a hunting area in West Hungary, in October 2025. For the virus isolation RK-13

First Genomic Evidence of California Hare Coltivirus from Natural Populations of Ixodes persulcatus Ticks in Northeast China.

Background: California hare coltivirus (CHCV) was isolated in California in 1976 from a hare. Despite its long history, it remained unclear whether CHCV was exclusively distributed in California with limited host ranges. Main body: By next-generation sequencing (NGS), we obtained a complete sequence of CHCV from Ixodes persulcatus collected in 2019 in northeast China. An expanded epidemiological investigation was subsequently performed on ticks belonging to four species (Ix. persulcatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, Devmacentor silvarum, Haemaphysalis longicornis) collected in northeastern China by

European Brown hare (Lepus europaeus) as a source of emerging and re-emerging pathogens of Public Health importance: A review.

European brown hare (Lepus europaeus, EBH) is probably the most important game animal in Europe throughout its historical distribution. The decline in its populations across its geographic range in Europe have been attributed to factors such as reproductive rate and the ability for adaptation, climate, feed availability, predators, anthropogenic factors and diseases. Apart from common diseases of hares with a high impact on their mortality such as European Brown hare Syndrome, EBH has been involved in the epidemiology of pathogens with zoonotic potential. In this work, the role of EBH as a sou

Effects of season and reproductive state on lipid intake and fatty acid composition of gastrointestinal tract contents in the European hare.

We investigated lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition of gastrointestinal tract contents in free-living, herbivorous European hares (Lepus europaeus). Mean crude fat content in hare stomachs and total gastrointestinal (GI) tracts was higher than expected for typical herbivore forages and peaked in late fall when hares massively deposited body fat reserves. Changes of FA proportions in different parts of the GI-tract indicated a highly preferential absorption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A further reduction of PUFA content in the caecum, along with the appearance of odd-chaine
