Till now, the management of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) depends on symptomatic treatment and replacement or anti-thyroid therapy. Uncovering the pathophysiologic mechanisms of autoimmunity provides hope for new insights into management. These new treatments aim to modulate the immune reaction and stop the autoimmune process. T regulatory cells (Tregs) are central in antagonising autoimmunity. This study aimed to compare the number of CD4/CD25/FOXP3 T regulatory cells in the different forms of autoimmune thyroid diseases and in the normal population, and to compare the number of CD4 + CD

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease exhibiting stromal fibrosis and follicular cell destruction due to lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. Besides deprecated analyses, histopathological approaches have not employed the use of electron microscopy adequately toward delineating subcellular-level interactions.
METHODS: Biopsies for ultrastructural investigations were obtained from the thyroids of five patients with HT after a thyroidectomy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was utilized to study representative tissue specimens.
RESULTS: Examination indicated inters

In 15-20% of cases, Graves' disease (GD) shifts to Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), while the shift from HT to GD is rare. We present a case of a patient in whom HT shifted to GD, along with a literature review. A 50-year-old woman with myxedema was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease due to hypothyroidism and the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin (TgAb); she also had thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSAb) without any signs of GD. Although thyroid hormone replacement therapy improved her thyroid function, 2 months later, hyperthyroidism appeared and did not

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), including Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and Graves' disease (GD), are the most common cause of acquired thyroid disorder during childhood and adolescence. Our purpose was to assess the main features of AITDs when they occur in association with genetic syndromes. We conducted a systematic review of the literature, covering the last 20 years, through MEDLINE via PubMed and EMBASE databases, in order to identify studies focused on the relation between AITDs and genetic syndromes in children and adolescents. From the 1654 references initially identified, 90 arti

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) may occur associated with celiac disease (CD). Regulatory B cells (Breg) subsets have been shown to play a significant role in autoimmune processes. Therefore, we have characterized their distribution in the peripheral blood obtained from 10 patients with isolated HT, 10 patients with HT + CD, 9 patients with isolated CD, and 9 healthy donors (HD). Th17 cells were significantly increased in patients with HT and in patients bearing both HT and CD, while patients with isolated CD exhibited a lower percentage of Th17, as compared with healthy donors. A hallmark of regulatory B cells is IL-10 production, hence their designation as IL-10+ B cells. Little is known about the ability of self-antigens to induce IL-10+ B cells in Graves' disease (GD), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), or other autoimmune disease. Here we pulsed purified B cells from 12 HT patients, 12 GD patients, and 12 healthy donors with the thyroid self-antigen, thyroglobulin (TG) and added the B cells back to the remaining peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). This procedure induced IL-10+ B-cell differentiation in GD. A similar tendency was observed in healthy donors, but

IgG4-related disease is a newly identified syndrome characterized by high serum IgG4 levels and increased IgG4-positive plasma cells in involved organs. The incidence of IgG4-related thyroiditis in the Caucasian population of Europe is unknown. We investigated formalin-fixed thyroid gland samples of 216 patients (191 Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 5 Riedel's thyroiditis, and 20 goiters, as controls), morphologically, and immunohistochemically. Cases were divided into two groups: IgG4-related Hashimoto's thyroiditis (24 cases) together with Riedel thyroiditis (1 case) and 171 non-IgG4-related thyroid

Hashimoto's encephalopathy is a rare complication of autoimmune thyroiditis not associated with thyroidal function decline. We report a 50-year-old man presenting with lower motor neuron symptoms evolving over 3 years and changes in behavior associated with attentive and cognitive impairment occurring in the last few months. Memory deficits, emotional instability, marked dysarthria, mild symmetric weakness of the lower extremities and fasciculations were the most striking clinical features. EEG was diffusely slow, cranial MRI revealed multiple subcortical white matter lesions, CSF protein was

The involvement of cell-mediated immunity in the pathogenesis of Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was investigated by employing a modified migration inhibition factor test using preparations of isolated T-lymphocytes. The migration of T-lymphocytes from patients with GD and HT in response to crude human thyroid antigen was significantly inhibited compared to the migration of T-lymphocytes from normal subjects. This response was organ specific. When normal T-lymphocytes were mixed with GD or HT T-lymphocytes in ratios varying from 1:9 to 1:1, the migration inhibition activi

The association of Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease with papillary, follicular, and medullary thyroid cancer has not been comprehensively investigated until now. This comparative clinicopathological study of consecutive patients thyroidectomized at a surgical referral center aimed to explore interdependencies between chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid cancer. Altogether, there were 852 (58.4%) patients with papillary thyroid cancer, 181 (12.4%) patients with follicular thyroid cancer, and 426 (29.2%) patients with sporadic medullary thyroid cancer, of whom 75 (5.1%) patients a

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto disease is a chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Despite adequate hormone substitution, some patients have persistent symptoms that may be the result of immunologic pathophysiology.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether thyroidectomy improves symptoms in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis who still have symptoms despite having normal thyroid gland function while receiving medical therapy.
DESIGN: Randomized trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02319538).
SETTING: Secondary care hospital in Norway.
PATIENTS: 150 patients aged 18 to 79 years with persistent Hashimoto-related symptoms

Genetic and family studies have indicated that Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis have a heritable component which appears to be shared to some extend also with some other autoimmune diseases (AIDs). In the present nation-wide study we describe familial risk for Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis identified from the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register (years 1964 through 2012) and the Outpatient Register (2001 through 2012). Family relationships were obtained from the Multigeneration Register and cancers from the Cancer Registry. Familial standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were c

Dandoku-ron (Treatise on Eliminating Poisons), written at the beginning of the 19th century by Hakuju Hashimoto, a doctor from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), is said to be the first book written by a Japanese author who "treated infectious diseases by means of modern concepts." Hashimoto acquired the ideas for his "infectious disease" theory through his own observations and experience. These ideas, suggesting that tangible poisons--not epidemics or congenital eczema--caused diseases such as smallpox, measles, syphilis, and scabies, were fresh and original at the time. The originality that Hashimo

The case of a thirty year old woman patient with subglottic oedema lasting for two years and causing periodically recurrent laryngeal breathlessness has been described. Multispecialistic diagnostic procedure as well as the clinical course of the disease have been presented. The issue of the degree to which the Hashimoto disease or the gastroesophageal reflux disease may be the cause of the oedema has been discussed.

This case concerns a 27-year-old man with a very high level of anti-thyroid antibody and pretibial elephantiasis myxedema which developed progressively over several years following subtotal thyroidectomy for << hashitoxicosis >>. Complementary resection of the thyroid stump was performed ; under microscopic examination this stump presented an aspect of atrophic thyroiditis. This unusual development towards atrophic thyroiditis raises the problem of the relations between the various forms autoimmune thyroiditis.

This study aims to investigate the possible causal link between Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT), an autoimmune disorder, and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), previously referred to as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a common metabolic condition. Using genome-wide association study data from large European populations, we performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. We identified single nucleotide polymorphisms strongly associated with HT and MAFLD/NAFLD, which we used as instrumental variables to probe the causal relationship between these 2 conditions

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The IKZF3 gene encodes a zinc-finger protein that plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of B lymphocytes. Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), mainly include Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), are probably caused by the aberrant proliferation of B cells. The objective of this study was to explore the association between IKZF3 polymorphisms and AITDs.
METHODS: We examined 915 AITD patients (604 GD and 311 HT) and 814 healthy controls. IKZF3 variants (rs2941522, rs907091, rs1453559, rs12150079 and rs2872507) were tested by PCR-liga

Background: The anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids and their derivatives are of considerable interest as a potential therapeutic agent in many diseases characterized by inflammation. Methods: This study aimed to measure the concentration of mediators derived from eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids. We included 33 women suffering from Hashimoto's disease, with an average age of 37.58 ± 8.41 kg, in the study. The levels of EPA and DHA acids were examined using gas chromatography, and their derivatives were studied with liquid chromatography (HPLC). Patient

INTRODUCTION: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in the United States, treated primarily with thyroid hormone replacement. However, some patients experience physiologic or compressive symptoms despite normalization of thyroid hormone levels, and thyroidectomy may provide relief. This systematic review evaluates the impact on quality of life (QoL) after thyroidectomy in HT patients.
METHODS: Search strategies were developed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. The search was from 2003 to 2024. Relevant terms in
